A/N: So I realized that since this story is based on a song, I need to write parts that correlate to the different parts of the song, so this might be a 3 chapter story. This chapter is a bit longer than the first one. Enjoy :D!
Chapter 2
K.C.'s POV
It had been a week since I told Adam that I was a spy. One week since I told him my plan to leave. One week since he decided to be on the run with me. His family had safe houses all over the country, so we picked the one that was the furthest from Mission Creek. The plan was to continue to travel north east, stopping only when absolutely necessary. We had packed our things in one suitcase and we each had our own backpacks. We said our goodbyes and drove off, and I saw how much I had affected my boyfriend's family. I was the reason their eldest son was leaving to who knows where. They told me that everything would be okay as long as I was safe, and being incognito with Adam was by best chance of being safe.
Even though we knew our destination, we decided to take as many different routes as possible, not using any GPS or technology for fear of being tracked. We had driven for over 18 hours and found ourselves in a small town that had a gas station and a motel, and absolutely nothing else. It was 1AM and we knew we needed to rest before we continued our journey. Adam parked the car by the gas station, changing the number plate in the process. The place look deserted, so sleeping in the navy blue Mustang would have to be an option. I got out the car, the buzzing neon sign of the supposedly 24 hour motel, the flickering street lamps and our car's headlights providing illumination to the dark new moon night. As Adam went to see if there was anyone at the abandoned-looking motel, I sat on the edge of the hood of the car, leaning back on my elbows, looking up at the stars, remembering how my Dad taught me to use them for navigation. I was overcome with sadness at the thought, realizing how much I missed my family, even little robot Kira.
"You okay?" Adam asked, pulling me back to reality, bringing my gaze down from the stars to his mahogany irises. He was leaning on the car with his arms, his hands planted on either side of my legs, staring at me tired eyes full of concern. I sat up and played with his hair a bit while telling him about my family. He got really excited when I told him about my robot sister, and chuckled when I told him about my little brother ("little brothers, am I right?"). It was so nice finally telling him about my real life, and for the first time in a week, I had a genuine smile on my face. "I've missed that smile of yours." "I've missed having one. You know being here, with you, talking about my family, reminds of all the good things in life." I said to him happily.
He flashed the biggest and brightest smile at me, the type of smile that made his eyes get all crinkly and small. Man I loved that smileā¦and those lips, I thought as my hands travelled up his arms and rested on his shoulder. He caught wind of what I wanted to do and wrapped my legs around his waist as he leaned into me, kissing me. I pulled him closer, deepening the kiss, running my fingers through his short brunette locks. His hands started moving up my legs to my waist when the sound of a bell interrupted us.
We quickly pulled away and got off the car, ready to face the source of the noise. An older lady with her flashlight pointed at our embarrassed faces was standing by the motel's door. "Well, if you two lovebirds need a place to stay you are more than welcome, but I want none of that happening in the room, ya hear? These walls are way too thin for that." Adam started to laugh and I elbowed him in the stomach sharply. I thanked her and got the keys to our room while Adam muttering under his breath got our suitcase and backpacks. She led us to a room that had a double bed and small bathroom. It was a bit dusty but I told her the dirt wasn't too much of an issue, so she went back to her room and left us to settle in. "Well, on the plus side, the bed isn't too bad, so you'll sleep well, I can take the floor." Adam stated, getting his sleeping bag out and stealing a few pillows from the bed. I knew he was being a gentleman, but I didn't want him getting sick on my watch. "You know, we could open the sleeping bags and sleep on the bed together?" I suggested, knowing that it would be a first to sleep in the same bed with Adam. "Are you sure?" "Positive, I don't want you get sick from all the dust on the floor." "Aww, you really do care about me" "Shut up!" I said, my cheeks heated up, not only because he was teasing but it would be the first time thing. Adam and I never went too far in our year of dating, since it was the first relationship for the both of us. We set up the bed together, opting to sleep on Adam's opened up sleeping bag, using mine as a blanket along with the extra clean linen the motel owner had brought for us.
While Adam had gone to park the car closer to the motel, I went into the bathroom to get ready for bed. It was only the sound of the leaky faucet and the soft breeze coming through the slightly cracked window until the telephone in our room began to ring. My heart started to race, knowing that there was no way anyone would be calling this phone they knew who was staying in the motel. I debated whether or not I should answer it, was it a wrong number, or was a rogue agent closing in on our location? All I knew is that the motel which seemed like a little safe haven for me and Adam suddenly felt very dangerous and unsafe. Maybe I was being too paranoid, and that the phone call was a random occurrence, but if I learnt anything from being a spy, is that nothing is ever as it seems. The call ended and I let out the breath I was holding and continued brushing my teeth.
Adam came in a moment later, locking the door and taking his shirt off before he leaned on the doorway of the bathroom. I saw him in the bathroom mirror while I rinsed my mouth and started to braid my hair into a loose side braid. I saw him staring at me with a soft smile on his face, as he was drinking in the sight of me in one of his T-shirts and my sleeping shorts that were mid-thigh length. When I was done with my night routine I turned and walked past him, the nervous feeling from the ominous phone call still messing with my head. I got into the right side of the bed and faced the wall, trying to hide my fears. Adam got into bed after he had finished in the bathroom. I didn't want to tell him about what had happened, but I didn't want my anxieties to get into the way of being with Adam for the night.
I turned around and saw that he was looking at me with dreamy eyes that were soon to drop from exhaustion. "K.C., you're so beautiful." he said sincerely as he tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear. "You're not too bad yourself Adam" I answered smirking. His thumb brushed my bottom lip and he gave me a soft kiss, whispering "I wish we could have this moment forever." I sadly whispered "Me too" and shuffled closer to him. He held me to him, my head resting on his bare chest, where I could hear his strong heartbeat. The sound was calming, and soon I drifted to sleep.
Adam's POV
I woke up the next morning feeling the ghost of K.C.'s kiss on my lips. I smiled thinking I would wake up to having her in my arms but the bed felt very empty. I shot out of bed and saw that I was indeed the only one in the room, and the suitcase my girlfriend and I were sharing was close to empty even though I had closed it last night. I soon connected the dots and realized she was gone. She must have gotten afraid and packed her things into a backpack and left while I was asleep. I quickly packed up what was left, found our car keys and went down to the little office of the motel owner.
While paying the lodging fee, the old lady recognized me from last night and told me about the bus that comes through this road every morning. She said that she saw K.C. board the bus and it had only left half an hour ago. It has a pit stop in a small town north of Nowhere (where we were) and was sure if I left soon I'd be able to reach her before the bus reaches the stop. I thanked her and got in the car, driving as fast as I could down the semi-tarred road. I had told K.C. that no matter what, I would follow her until the end, I would make sure she never has to face this assassin alone.
