Charles and I were sitting in the library. I was attempting not to listen to his thoughts as he obsessively studied. Raven was mumbling to herself in the bathroom, still mocking what Amy had said in the bar.
She just isn't going to let this go, is she? I just don't understand why this is hurting her so much. Maybe I worry too much.
Charles kept running his thesis over and over again in his head, trying to memorize it.
"Charlie."
"What?" He asked rubbing the side of his head.
I smiled. It amused me how he always puts his hand on the side of his head to read minds. Charles is going to be one of the most powerful telepaths in the world one day. Okay, it doesn't bug me that much. Okay I think it's cute. How do I know that he will be one of the most telepaths in the world? I see the future, sometimes when I sleep, sometimes when I'm awake. A power that I "acquired" from a guy in China who thought he was seeing visions of the apocalypse, when in reality he was just seeing disco.
"You okay?" I asked him as I moved to the plush leather chair across from the couch he was in. I placed my long legs on the coffee table in between us.
"Yeah, just stressed I guess." He gave me a tired smile.
"Don't worry about it Charlie. You will do fine." I smiled back.
He smirked."Are you saying that because you know? or to just make me feel better?"
"I'll never tell." I thought smirking right back. Charles moved his book off of his lap and laid it next to him on the couch. He leaned forward, his forearms resting on his knees, folding his hands together.
"I could always just pry it from your mind." He thought cocking his head to the side, his smirk still prominent on his face. I let a sly smile creep across my face.
When he looks at me like that...
"You can always try." I thought winking at him playfully.
Raven walked out of the bathroom, interrupting our conversation, in a plush white bathrobe. She had let her usual blonde façade drop and had replaced it with her natural blue skin and orange hair.
"Would you date me?" She asked Charles casually. Charles had turned back to his book, not even looking at Raven.
"Of course I would. Any young man would be lucky to have you. You are stunning." He said automatically without looking up from his book.
"Looking like this?" She said furrowing her eyebrows.
"Charlie be careful how you answer this." I warned him, trying to pull him out of his book. Charles's attention snapped up to Raven.
"Like what? Blue?" He paused struggling to find something that would not offend her. I could hear the mental squabble in his head. "You're my oldest friend." He replied slowly.
"I'm your only friend." She said frowning.
"Excuse you! Do I not exist?" I exclaimed loudly, turning around in my chair to look at Raven. She sent me an apologetic smile. Charles laughed loudly.
"Well?" She asked turning back to him, and biting her lip. Charles took a deep breath.
"I'm incapable of thinking of you in that way. You're..." He swallowed. "I feel responsible for you. Anything else would just feel wrong." He finished looking back down at his book, once more. She sighed in frustration.
"But what if you didn't know me?" She pressed, crossing the room.
"Unfortunately I do know you. I don't know what has gotten into you. You're awfully obsessed with your looks." Charles exclaimed. He shot me a look.
"Raven listen to me. You are beautiful just the way you are. As much as I hate to admit it, that girl Amy is right. You should never forget, Mutant and Proud." I said, smiling.
She nodded and walked to the couch where Charles was sitting, and laid down, resting the back of her head against him. "I'm sleepy, will you read to me." She mumbled, her eyes already closed.
"Can't I have my thesis coming up, I have to study." He replied running a hand through his brown hair.
"Well fine, read me that. Your thesis always sends me right off." She said sarcastically.
I laughed, and Charles shot me a dirty look. He began to read, his voice soft. Raven got comfortable. Her hair was still wet from her shower, and she was shivering from the cold. I held up my hands and shot a fireball into the fireplace, successfully igniting the logs already placed within. A current of warmth, washed through the room. I turned to watch the fire, dance over the logs. Charles continued to read his thesis.
Listening to him read reminded me of the day we met.
*FLASHBACK*
It's freshman year in college, and Charles is late for class. I got a seat purposely away from the other students. I see how this will play out, he will come in and take the only open seat next to me. Honestly I'm not here by coincidence, I'm here because he and his sister are two more powerful mutants. Their powers drew me here, and I don't intend to leave without that power. I've been planning this for weeks, seeing Charles's and Raven's faces in my head, seeing how they will react to my appearance, and figuring out what to say to get him to introduce me to Raven.
The teacher began the lecture, boring me into a stupor. I already know everything, I mean I've been through countless eras, and have taken classes at countless colleges all over the world. After a while it all starts to blend together, and if I ever have a problem I can just read minds.
Minds don't give me any trouble at all, honestly I'm looking forward to the challenge that this new telepath will give me. I mean after all, he is supposed to be one of the greatest telepaths in the world.
The door suddenly slammed open and Charles waltzed in.
This is it.
"Late on your first day? Well we are off to a great start now aren't we," The teacher drawled out. He glared at Charles who was idling by the door. The plan was to make Charles like me. To get close to him, to get close to Raven, so I could take Raven's ability to shape-shift, but it didn't turn out that way.
Charles let a smirk play across his face.
"Don't stop on my account professor." He walked over confidently and took the empty seat next to me. He caught my eye and winked. I sent him a flirty smile.
Sometimes it's too easy.
Charles busied himself with whispering with the pretty red-head on his other side. The professor finished up the lecture quickly. "Now you all get a treat on your first day, because of Mr. Xavier's tardiness. Pop quiz." A chorus of groans echoed through the classroom as he passed out the quiz. He sat behind his desk. I busied myself with the quiz, pretending to be interested. I saw Charles out of the corner of my eye, press an index finger to his forehead. I felt his mind probe the room, searching for answers. I chuckled under my breath, and imagined a brick wall stretching around our teachers mind, blocking the answers from him. A confused look shot across Charles's face. He turned and looked at me.
I pretended to answer the questions on my test innocently. I felt him on the edge of my mind trying to find the answers. I smirked and imagined a brick wall stretching around my mind, blocking his attempts.
"If you want to read my mind, you're going to have to try harder than that." I thought quickly, pushing the message into his mind. His reaction was priceless.
His mouth dropped open."You're like me?" He thought. I rolled my eyes and froze everyone in the room. I turned towards him.
"You could say that." I responded out loud, not bothering to use my telepathy.
He took a deep breath looking around the room in wonder. He waved his hand in front of the red-head's face, but she just stared straight ahead. "How did you do that? Will you teach me?" He asked eagerly.
I smiled. "I'll teach you everything I know." I said drawing him in.
Something changed that day. As I got to know them, I didn't want to hurt them, and I sure as hell didn't want to leave. He and Raven were so kind to me, and I didn't want to take their powers. So I stayed and we've been friends ever since.
*PRESENT TIME*
After that day I waited so long to tell Charles the truth about my past. I never told him the real reason I was there that day. I've never told him that the mutant powers sing to me, that they draw me in, that I collect them, leaving a trail of bodies in my wake. I pulled my legs up into the chair and crossed them underneath me. Raven's breathing had slowed down. Charles looked over at me, a concerned look crossed over his face. I smiled faintly and looked back into the fireplace, watching the flames once more. Suddenly the world faded away and I was pulled into my memories once more.
