Part 2: Howl to Duel

Maddy: 'So, what are we doing today Dad?'

Phil: 'Qualifiers today for Worlds. You've got two qualifiers, I've got just the one.'

Maddy: 'Always wanted to compete at Worlds.'

Phil: 'Tell you what- if you win one of your qualifiers, I'll get you a 2 year tour card.'

Maddy: 'I've already got a tour card for the next two years- I was planning on competing once I'd finished sixth form.'

Phil: 'What were you doing there?'

Maddy: 'I was doing Law. I was hoping to go to a proper college when I was settled on tour so I could finish the course and go to Uni.'

Phil: 'You're clever then?'

Maddy: 'I like to think so.'

Phil: 'Nice headband by the way.'

Maddy: 'Thanks- I've not worn it in a while. Where are the qualifiers?'

Phil: 'Being held in Newcastle- Civic Centre.' Just as we were leaving, Hannah stopped us.

Hannah: 'Were you planning on saying bye before you went?'

Phil: 'It's only to Newcastle.'

Hannah: 'Well while you're down there, could you drop a letter off to my doctor asking him to change my address on his records?'

Phil: 'Sure. Anything else?'

Hannah: 'Yeah- I've also got a letter to Megan that needs posting, and could you pick up some lasagne sheets?'

Phil: 'Of course. You sure you don't want to come?'

Hannah: 'I'd love to, but I'm picking up some furniture later. Keep me updated about how things go baby.'

Phil: 'Anything for you.' We then kissed.

Maddy: 'Love you Mum.'

Hannah: 'And you Maddy.' We then left.

Maddy: 'Thanks for helping me with my deck.'

Phil: 'No problem.'

Maddy: 'Who do we have to beat then?'

Phil: 'You're up first in your pro debut against Tom Jacob of Germany, and if you get through that, you face either Jean-Louis Bonaparte of France or Kris Travis of USA. I'm in action late on in the day, and my seeding in the Qualifiers means that I'm up against veteran Stormer, who's not competed in 6 months after I broke his arm.'

Maddy: 'You broke his arm?'

Phil: 'Wasn't delibrate. I was going to help him out after James Birchall and his cronies were assaulting him with a fold-up chair. I went to kick Birchall, but he dodged and I hit Stormer's arm.'

Maddy: 'He hold a grudge?'

Phil: 'Probably. My conscience is clear though. Because I know it wasn't deliberate. You need to look the part though.'

Maddy: 'Meaning?'

Phil: 'Edgy- I like the headband, but you need to be a bit more edgy… bit more you.'

Maddy: 'How long have we got?'

Phil: 'Hour.'

Maddy: 'Why don't we go shopping after the Qualifiers.'

Phil: 'Sure. You've got a nice budget- qualifiers for Worlds this year get a minimum of £7000. And in the main draw, every duel you win is worth an extra £500.'

Maddy: 'How much for winning?'

Phil: '£198,000. Plus the two grand you get for winning 8 duels. And best duel is worth another £25,000. And you get £3000 for an OTK.'

Maddy: 'Can we help you?'

Mystery Person: 'Yeah- I'm looking for the Civic centre. Where the duelling qualifiers are being held?'

Maddy: 'Sure- go down to the end of the road, turn left, walk down that road, and it's your second turning on your left. You competing there?'

Mystery Person: 'Something like that. Hang on- is that you Phillip?'

Phil: 'Depends who's asking?' The girl then took her face-mask off.

Blair: 'I'll see you around. By the way, what's your name?'

Maddy: 'Maddy.'

Blair: 'Nice ponytail. If you're with him, I'll see you at Worlds.' The girl then ran off again.

Maddy: 'Who was that?'

Phil: 'Looked like Blair Flannigan. Helped her out a few years back- probably about 2008 or 9. She told me that she'd see me someday to repay me. She's grown a lot though.'

Maddy: 'Recruit her?'

Phil: 'We can't just recruit anyone- it has to be the right person. I let you off with Brooke, I'll sign her off with Hannah. But you need to use your power responsibly.'

Maddy: 'You're sounding like my old parents.'

Phil: 'Don't mean to. What I'm trying to say is that not everyone will accept you for being you. So you need to take things a little more steady.'

Maddy: 'Can I be in my wolf form around the club?'

Phil: 'Ask your mum- she's in charge, not me.' We then arrived at the stadium, and after a couple of minutes preparation time, me and Maddy went out for her first qualifier, to my entrance music (Bring me to Life by Evanesence). Immediately, I grabbed a mic as the announcer made the introduction.

Announcer: 'The following is the final match-up in the first qualifying round of the WDC World Championships. Introducing first, accompanied by Phil Robinson, from Northumbria, England, Maddy Smith.'

Phil: 'Now you lot listen up. I'm Phil Robinson, and I'm mean and nasty. And this is my girl Maddy Smith. And she's pretty and lively. A new force is invading the WDC, anyone who saw Gortonia will know that. Hannah is the missing part of the puzzle, she's finding new recruits, new victims. We are the Renegades- All for the Renegades!'

Some generic rock music then played as her opponent came out.

Announcer: 'Introducing her opponent, from Hamburg, Germany, he is Tom Jacob.' Tom came out, and immediately ran down to the duelling zone. When he got there, him and Maddy both activated their duel disks and started their duel.

WDC World Championships 2015 First Qualifying Round: Tom Jacob LP:4000 vs. Maddy Smith LP:4000

Turn 1- Maddy: 'I'm up first. I draw. I activate Scapegoat. This produces 4 Goat Tokens for me (Def.:0000)x4. I end my turn with 2 face-downs.'

Tom: 'I draw. I summon King's Knight (Atk:1400). Destroy her Token.' King's Knight sliced straight through Maddy's Goat Token, destroying it. 'I end my turn with a face-down.'

Maddy: 'I draw. I summon the Tuner monster Bicorn Re'em (Atk:1800). I now tune Level 4 Bicorn Re'em with my Level 1 Goat Token to Synchro summon Thunder Unicorn (Atk:2200).'

Tom: 'Nice- always wanted to see a Unicorn.'

Maddy: 'Your dream's about to become a nightmare. Thunder Unicorn's ability lets me reduce your monster's Attack points- 500 less for every monster I control. I control 3, so that's… all of them actually.' Thunder Unicorn paralysed King's Knight with a blast of electricity, making it powerless (Atk:1400-0000).'

'Thunder Unicorn, light up his life with Supercharger Bolt!' Thunder Unicorn charged straight at King's Knight, destroying it, and sending Tom straight down (Tom LP:4000-1800). Officials then came over to check on Tom, who seemed to land badly on his neck. After several minutes of treatment, an official gave the news to the announcer.

Announcer: 'Ladies and Gentlemen, as a result of a neck injury, Tom Jacob has been deemed unfit to continue. Your winner by KO- Maddy Smith.' Maddy then raised her fist, as fans started cheering her, and Tom was stretchered out in a neck brace. We then went backstage to watch the rest of the qualifying round.

Maddy: 'I enjoyed that.'

Phil: 'Didn't take long.'

Maddy: 'Hopefully my last qualifier lasts longer than 90 seconds.'

Phil; 'Hopefully. Good duelling anyway.'

Maddy: 'Thanks.' Jodi then arrived.

Phil: 'I thought you were getting furniture.'

Jodi: 'I was until Hannah sent me to learn the ropes with duelling. Allyx is helping her instead.'

Phil: 'Fine- feel free to join us. You already missed Maddy knock her first opponent out cold with one attack.'

Maddy: 'Not my fault- I was just starting to get going.'

Jodi: 'Who's up next?'

Phil: 'Next is my duel. But that's not for a while yet.' We then watched the rest of the qualifying round 1.

Maddy: 'So it's that Bonaparte I'm up against right?'

Phil: 'Yeah. And when you get back, I'll give you your birthright.'

Maddy: 'Birthright?'

Phil: 'I've done a lot of wolfblood research, and in one of my research papers, I came across a story about a birthright that only a select few wolfbloods can unlock. Only certain wolfbloods have the mental fortitude to handle the power. You're one of them I believe.'

Maddy: 'And if I'm not?'

Phil: 'Hannah's found a test we can do for it. It will take about 15-20 minutes, and it's completely harmless. Hannah will explain more later- I'm not sure on all the details. You up for it?'

Maddy: 'If it's my birthright, I deserve a shot at it.'

Phil: 'Glad you said that.'

Maddy: 'What can I do with my primal power?'

Phil: 'Usually just enhancing your wolfblood self.'

Maddy: 'Does that mean only Hannah knows?'

Phil: 'No- that's the truth. There is other benefits, but how much you use it for is completely dependent on how strong you are mentally.'

Maddy: 'I can do it I reckon. What do you know about this Bonaparte?'

Phil: 'He's French of French-Canadian descent. Been pro for over 5 years, highest ranking 29, never qualified for Worlds- this is his 3rd appearance at this stage of the qualifiers.'

Maddy: 'Faced him before?'

Phil: 'No, but Hannah has- European Championship in 2011, second round. She spent 20 minutes making him look like a complete and utter pillock. Eventually won with Gishki Gustkraken.'

Maddy: 'Who won that competition?'

Phil: 'Myself- it was my 3rd in a row. I've won that title 5 times, including this year.'

Maddy: 'Nice.' After lunch, it was time for my duel.

Phil: 'Leave this to the professional.'

Maddy: 'What's your deck?'

Phil: 'I have several to choose from, but for this one, I'll use old faithful- Firepower.'

Maddy: 'I want to know about all your decks.'

Phil: 'Maybe later.'

Point of View- Jodi

Phil came out first, to his music (Unbreakable by Fireflight according to the website).

Announcer: 'The following is the final qualifying round of the WDC World Championships. Introducing first, representing the Renegades, from Manchester, England, the Manchester Muscle- Phil Robinson.' Phil walked out on his own, and made the Renegades salute, before walking downto the duelling zone, sunglasses stil on. He then grunted, as Stormer went out, to some up-tempo dance music (Riding the Winds by WDC Music Group).

'Introducing his opponent, this is Stormer.' Stormer came out, and ran down to the duelling zone. Phil then grabbed a mic.

Phil: 'Settle down dudes, settle down. Stormer- great to see you back. Can I just clarify about your arm?'

Stormer: 'What about the arm?'

Phil: 'You know, it getting broken? I just wanted to explain that it's not my fault. I wasn't aiming for you, I wasn't trying to break anybody's arm.'

Stormer: 'Despite you never asking until now about my arm, your apology is accepted.'

Phil: 'Yeah- I never actualy apologised as such. You see, I don't apologise for stuff I haven't done wrong. Now are we duelling or arguing? Because today smells a lot like an uprising.' They then activated their duel disks (Phil's was black with a red trim, and Stormer's was a vivid green), starting the duel as Phil took his sunglasses off.

World Championship Qualifiers: Stormer LP:4000 vs. Phil Robinson LP:4000

Turn 1: Phil: 'I'm starting. I draw. I summon Volcanic Rocket (Atk:1900). When I summon Rocket, it lets me add Blaze Accelerator to my hand. I end my turn with a face-down.'

Stormer: 'My turn. I shall lay a monster face-down and end my turn.'

Phil: 'I draw. I activate Blaze Accelerator. But now I'll upgrade it to activate Tri-Blaze Accelerator. This lets me send Volcanic Counter to my graveyard, and destroy your monster. Then you lose 500 Life points. Fire away.' Tri-Blaze loaded up with Volcanic Counter, and shot it out at Stormer's monster (Harpie Lady 2), destroying it and the flames washing over Stormer (Stormer LP:4000-3500).

'Like that?'

Stormer: 'I have been in more pain than that.'

Phil: 'Good- I wouldn't want you hurting too much too early. I think I'll take a temporary break there- ass-kicking will resume very shortly.'

Stormer: 'Over to me. I shall repeat my last move- a set monster. I now lay a face-down and end my turn.'

Phil: 'I draw. Once again, I'll activate the effect of my Tri-Blaze. This time, I'll ditch my Volcanic Rat. Ready, Aim, Fire.' Volcanic Rat was fired at Stormer's face-down monster (Harpie Lady), destroying it (Stormer LP:3500-3000). 'As you are aware, I can't attack on the turn I use the effect of Tri-Blaze. Which is helpful for you. Doesn't stop me summoning another Rocket though (Atk:1900). Rocket's ability gives me another Blaze Accelerator in my hand. I end my turn.'

Stormer: 'My draw. I summon Harpie Lady 1 (Atk:1300). Her ability powers up every Wind monster on my field by 300 Attack points (Atk:1300-1600). Next is Elegant Egotist.'

Phil- 'Had a feeling that'd come.'

Stormer: 'Your feeling is true. This summons out Harpie Lady Sisters (Atk:1950-2250). Harpie Lady Sisters, destroy Volcanic Rocket.' Harpie Lady Sisters scratched and clawed and screamed at Volcanic Rocket until it was destroyed (Phil LP:4000-3650). 'I end my turn.'

Phil: 'I draw. Kid gloves are comin' off now- I summon Solar Flare Dragon (Atk:1500). I now overlay Level 4 Flare ragon and Rocket. Let the souls of these two monsters stack, and let them become anew- let them become 1. I summon Number 26- Northern Lights Dragon (Atk:3000).'

Stormer- 'A new monster?'

Phil: 'Yeah. This is like Maddy, like the Renegades- you're the past, we're the now and the future. Northern Lights Dragon, blow away his Harpie Lady 1 with Northwind Hurricane.' Northern Lights Dragon created a massive blast of wind which destroyed Harpie Lady, knocking Stormer to the ground (Stormer LP:3000-1600, HLS Atk:2250-1950). 'What's up- I thought you liked wind? I end my turn with a face-down.'

Stormer: 'My turn. I equip my Sisters with Megamorph. This shall double their original Attack points so long as my Life points are outnumbered by yours (Atk:1950-3900). Now destroy his Dragon.'

Phil: 'I activate my face-down Defence Draw. This negates the damage and lets me draw a card.'

Stormer: 'My turn is done.'

Phil: 'I draw. I've enjoyed this, but I think it's time we wrap this up. I activate The Shallow Grave.'

Stormer: 'But why?'

Phil: 'We both revive a monster. I choose Volcanic Rat (Def.:2000).'

Stormer: 'Return Harpie Lady 1 (Def.:1400, HLS Atk:3900-4200).'

Phil: 'You could give those Sisters a million Attack points and it wouldn't make a difference. Not when I send my Tri-Blaze Accelerator to my graveyard.'

Stormer: 'Why would you do that?'

Phil: 'So I can summon the almighty Volcanic Doomfire (Atk:3000). Doomfire, roast his Harpie Lady.' Doomfire pummeled Harpie Lady 1 with a flaming fist, destroying it. 'Now Doomfire, I'll activate your ability. Go- Cataclysmic Eruption!' Doomfire then smashed Harpie Lady Sisters with a fireball, destroying it (Stormer LP:1600-1100).'

'Northern Lights Dragon, why don't we have a nice warm-down?' Phil's Dragon flew in front of Stormer, and it's wings shone with the northern lights (Stormer LP:1100-0000).

After the duel ended, Phil walked over to Stormer, and looked down at him. He then picked Stormer up, and looked to be leaving when he suddenly nailed Stormer in the back of the head with a rolling elbow. He then grabbed a mic. 'We are the Renegades! All for the Renegades!' He then soaked in the reception as he left, coming back to us.'

Jodi: 'That was the coolest thing I've ever seen.'

Phil: 'I think my duelling's pretty hot at the moment.'

Maddy: 'So go on then- your decks.'

Phil: 'Fine. You've seen Firepower, that's about dealing damage fast and hard. Then there's my Gimmick Puppet deck, which I received from an old friend who quit duelling. That's about destruction and punishing an opponent for using strong monsters. Cyber Dragon is a swarm deck, looking to bring out powerful Fusion monsters as quick as possible for fast wins. Ancient Gear is a rarely-used one, mainly against decks I know will use a lot of Spells and Traps, to try and catch them out. And I've got a brand new Time and Space deck, which I've never used.'

Maddy: 'Nice. My deck's a Beast deck, focused on bringing out monsters very quickly to deal lots of damage.' We then looked at the draw, before Maddy ended the Qualifiers.

Phil: 'Duel like you did against the German kid, and you'll breeze it. By the way, this might be helpful for your deck.' He then tossed Maddy a card, and she just smiled.

Maddy: 'All for the Renegades.' She then left.

Jodi: 'What did you just give her?'

Phil: 'Closed Forest. It's a Field spell, and it'll really power up her deck.' Maddy then came out to Phil's music, and just tapped her foot for a moment, before walking out in full view of the crowd.

Announcer: 'The following is the final qualifying round of the WDC World Championships. Introducing first, from Northumbria, Maddy Smith.' Maddy walked down, smiling the whole way. She then made the Renegades salute, and pushed her hair back.

Some french music (La Noyee by Yann Tiersan) then played as her opponent came out, draped in the flag of Quebec. 'Introducing her opponent, from the Principality of Quebec, Canada, Jean-Louis Bonaparte.' Bonaparte shouted something in French, and came walking down, duel disk around his body. When he got there, him and Maddy both activated their duel disks.

WDC World Championships Qualifiers: Jean-Louis Bonaparte LP:4000 vs. Maddy Smith LP:4000

Turn 1: Bonaparte: 'You can take the first turn.'

Maddy- 'Nah- you go first. Against me, it's the only chance you'll gt to compete on a level playing field.'

Bonaparte: 'Fine. I draw. I summon Toy Soldier (Atk:800). I end my turn with 4 face-downs.'

Maddy: 'I draw. I summon Des Kangaroo (Atk:1500). Kangaroo, rough up his Soldier.'

Bonaparte: 'I activate my face-down Negate Attack. This stops your Kangaroo in it's tracks.'

Maddy: 'I end my turn with 2 face-downs.'

Bonaparte: 'I draw. I activate the ability of my Toy Soldier. During my standby phase, I can summon two more Toy Soldiers (Atk:800)x3. I now activate Crowning of the Emperor, letting me tribute one of my Soldiers to summon my Toy Emperor (Atk:2400). Toy Emperor, destroy Des Kangaroo.'

Toy Emperor sliced Des Kangaroo with it's sword, destroying it (Maddy LP:4000-3100). 'When my Emperor destroys a monster in battle, I can return a Trap from my graveyard to my hand.'

Maddy: 'Yeah, well when my Beast-type monster is destroyed and sent to my graveyard, I can pay 1000 Life points to summon this from my hand: Green Baboon, Defender of the Forest (Atk:2600, Maddy LP:3100-2100).'

Bonaparte: 'I end my turn with a face-down.'

Maddy: 'I draw. I activate Graceful Charity, letting me draw 3 cards and discard 2. Next I activate my face-down. It's called Gift of the Mystical Elf. This gives me 300 Life points per monster on the field. I'm speaking slower so you understand me. Ok?' An image of Mystical Elf appeared, and it absorbed balls of light from all the monsters on the field (Maddy LP:2100-3300).

'Next I activate Monster Reborn, reviving The Trojan Horse (Atk:1600). I now tribute it to summon the biggest Beast in town- my Big Koala (Atk:2700).'

Bonaparte: 'Mon ami- he is c'est massive.'

Maddy: 'Yeah- he is. Big Koala, squash that Toy Emperor.' Big Koala came running over, making the ground shake, and then just splashed onto Toy Emperor, destroying it (Bonaparte LP:4000-3700). 'Green Baboon, destroy Toy Soldier.' Green Baboon thumped Toy Soldier with it's club, destroying it (Bonaparte LP:4000-2200). 'I end my turn.' Maddy then gave a smile, and then crowd started chanting for her.

Bonaparte: 'My turn. I activate Monster Reborn. This revives my Toy Emperor (Atk:2400). I now equip it with Megamorph. This shall double it's Attack points until a time when your Life points outnumber mine (Atk:2400-4800).'

'Toy Emperor, lead the crusade.'

Maddy: 'I activate Changing Destiny. This forces your Emperor into Defence mode (Def.:800). Now you have a choice. Half of your monster's Attack points is 2400. So either you gain 2400 Life points, or I lose 2400 Life points. You have 2200 Life points. No pressure.'

Bonaparte: 'I choose to gain Life points.' Changing Destiny then looked to be recovering Bonaparte's Life points, before he was engulfed by poison (Bonaparte LP:2200-0000).

Maddy: 'The joys of Bad Reaction to Simochi.'

After the duel, Maddy just looked down. She then realised that she'd qualified for Worlds, and howled, before Phil got up and walked away.

Jodi: 'Where are you going?'

Phil: 'This is Maddy's moment, not mine. I'll support her, but her success is only down to her.'

Jodi: 'And you?'

Phil: 'I'm not sure what I'll do yet. Personal sacrifice sometimes has to happen for the good of the cause.'

Jodi: 'Meaning what?'

Phil: 'Jodi, how long have we known each other?'

Jodi: 'Depends on if you count the time before you brainwashed me.' He then left. Shortly afterwards, the three of us met up.

Maddy: 'Worlds here we come.'

Phil: 'You did well kid. Sorry I shouldn't be calling you kid- you did well though.'

Maddy: 'And the combo at the end?'

Phil: 'You capatilized on a mistake. You were… impressive.'

Maddy: 'Come on- give me a bit of credit.' We then went into the centre of Newcastle to do some shopping, where /we came across one of the competetors from the qualifiers.

Jodi: 'Hey- isn't that that Brooke girl from the qualifiers?'

Phil: 'So it is.' Maddy then ran off to her, and came back a few minutes later with her.

Maddy: 'She's in the club now.'

Phil: 'Did you have permission?'

Maddy: 'Didn't know I needed permission.'

Phil: 'You're new to the club, so I'll cover you this time- say I gave permission. You'll learn the rules soon enough.'

Jodi: 'If she learns the rules, she's better than me. The only rules I know of are don't insult you and don't mention car accidents.'

Maddy: 'Why not mention car accidents?'

Phil: 'Jodi probably already knows, but I'll tell you. Feburary 19th 2005. Hannah's… well her Dad wasn't very nice, and he was trying to move them from the country.'

Maddy: 'Why?' I was then interrupted by a call.

Phil: 'Hello, this is Phil Robinson, how can I help?'

Lydia: 'Two strangers have come to invade the base.'

Phil: 'Descriptions?'

Lydia: 'One's about 5ft 7/8, the other looks about 4ft. Both wearing black.'

Phil: 'We're on the way. Just hold them up and stop them taking anything. Are you alone?'

Lydia: 'No- Freja and Sean are here.'

Phil: 'How did Sean get in?'

Lydia: 'He's got a key.'

Phil: 'Fine- I'll be back in about 20.' The call then ended.

Maddy: 'You were saying?'

Phil: 'Storytime can wait- a couple of people have invaded the base.'

Maddy: 'Who?'

Phil 'Don't know- they're in disguise.' We then drove back to base. When we got there, Hannah was already there, talking to the invaders.

Hannah: 'Akiza, I'm not an idiot. Take that disguise off, then we can talk.' Akiza then took her disguise off, and Maddy grabbed the other masked person's disguise.

Maddy: 'Aren't you that Luna kid?'

Luna: 'How do you know me?'

Maddy: 'I recognise you- you've been associated with Akiza for ages.'

Hannah: 'Right- what do you want?'

Luna: 'Akiza, you said we were invited?'

Akiza: 'I'm here to challenge Hannah.'

Hannah: 'Why couldn't you wait till Worlds? And how did you even get in?'

Akiza: 'The door was open. I've been trying to find you for weeks, because I want to embarrass you. And I thought you'd quit duelling.'

Hannah: 'I took a few months off because I was injured- I needed to rehab a serious back injury. I didn't know if I was going to be able to return, but it was always my intention. I got a little distracted though.'

Akiza: 'Yeah- got distracted with him.'

Hannah: 'So what?'

Akiza: 'Thought there wasn't anything going on between you.'

Hannah: 'Yeah, well we all make mistakes. Just mine lasted over 20 years. Come on then- if you want a duel, we may as well while you're here.'

Maddy: 'If you're duelling red head, I'll duel Luna.'

Akiza: 'Who says?'

Hannah: 'I'm sure the police wouldn't mind finding out how you broke in here.'

Luna: 'I'll duel first Akiza. Give you chance to prepare.' She then walked over to Maddy. 'So you're Maddy then? You're supposed to be pretty good.'

Maddy: 'Yeah- could say that. I'm ready when you are- I'll even let you go first.'

Luna: 'Sure- not like I'm as quiet as I used to be.'
