Chapter 1
Our life has been perfect, Jeanie stopped hunting Divergent and is actually pretty nice, I am a faction ambassador with Tobias working with me most of the time since he accepted the leadership position.
We are going to check up on the guards around Amity today, we walk hand in hand around the edges of the farms.
Suddenly, there is a rustling noise and a girl with olive skin, grey eyes, and dark hair steps out of the bushes.
I pull out my knife while Tobias raises his gun. "Who are you and what are you doing outside the fence of the city? I am a Dauntless leader and can have you imprisoned," says Tobias quickly.
I step back, more people follow the girl, they do not wear the clothes of any faction- browns, and tans mostly -but they don't look factionless.
"Four, I've never seen factionless outside the fence before, have you?" I ask and Tobias shakes his head.
A boy that looks like he could be the girl's brother brings up a bow. "Are you from the Capitol?" he asks and I quickly rest the bow from his grasp with a quick disarming move Tobias taught me, he looks at me amazed.
"Size can be deceiving. What Capitol are you talking about? There is only one city here and you are outside its borders, why?" I ask and they look at me in confusion.
"Tris," says Tobias, "Go ask the Amity if they have a spare truck, and for god sake, bring some bread," he adds and I stifle a laugh, the bread has peace serum in it.
When I get back with a truck and five loaves of bread, Tobias has two bows at his side and the group- which I now see is quite large -is sitting on the grass.
I toss him the bag of bread and he catches it swiftly, he hands it out to the group and they eat it quickly, I grin.
"My name is Tris, we will take you back to the Dauntless compound and further question you there," I say and they all nod, except a boy with blond hair, he is a medium height, stocky build. He did not eat the bread.
"Why are they acting so happy?" he asks and I lean onto Tobias, laughing.
"The bread that Amity makes has peace serum in it, should wear off in a few hours but they will be a little happier than normal for a while," I say.
"Remember when you accidentally ate a whole loaf?" I ask Tobias with a huge grin, "It was the best sex I ever had, that's for sure." I say elbowing him and he picks me up, tossing me over his shoulder.
"Follow us," he calls over his shoulder and everyone gets up, following us to the truck.
I smack his back. "Four! Put me down!" I say and a little girl with blond hair, like me but very pretty, comes up to us.
"You should put her down if she doesn't like it, it's not very nice." I laugh and I can sense Tobias grinning.
"I'll make a deal with you," I say, my attention on Tobias again. "If you put me down I will wear your favorite lingerie tonight." he immediately sets me down and I giggle.
"Are you two together or something?" asks the blond boy and I nod.
We climb into the truck, Tobias behind the wheel, me sitting next to him, the blond boy sitting next to me, and everyone else in the back.
"What's your name, initiate?" I ask without thinking, Tobias snorts. "Sorry, we just finished training this year's initiates and I'm a little stuck in instructor Six mode," I say with a laugh. The boy looks confused but answers.
"My name's Peeta, this is Katniss, Gale, Haymitch, Prim, Finnick, Annie, Effie, Cinna, Katniss and Prim's mother, and Gale's family." He says, gesturing to each in turn.
"I'm Tris, but I usually go by Six in the compound, this is my boyfriend, Four. I'm a faction ambassador and Four is a Dauntless leader." I explain and Peeta nods but he still looks confused.
"Wait, what's a faction? What is Dauntless?" He asks and I sigh.
"We can explain that more when we get back to the compound, for now, can you tell us about where you came from?" I ask and he nods.
"Where we come from, there are twelve districts and on Capitol. The districts provide goods for the Capitol, a very wealthy city while most of the districts live in poverty, most of us come from district twelve, the coal mining district." He explains and I nod, following along.
"75 years ago, the districts rebelled against the Capitol, the capitol defeated twelve districts and destroyed the thirteenth one. After that, the Capitol created a thing called the Hunger Games. Basically, they take one boy and one girl from each district from the ages of 12-18 and watch them fight to the death."
I stare at him in shock, what he is describing is a corrupt barbaric place.
"Haymitch, Finnick, Annie, Katniss and I were all chosen for the Hunger Games at some point, Katniss and I won last year but having two victors made the Capitol angry. This year, for the Hunger Games, they said they could draw from the winners, that means Katniss, being the only girl victor, would have to fight again."
I nod, showing I am listening.
"She wanted to get out so we all left, Katniss and Gale know how to hunt so they kept us fed for a while. We do need a place to go, though, we can't live on our own forever." He explains and I nod.
I share a glance with Tobias. "Ready to scare the crap out of some newbies?" I ask with a smile and he smirks back. "Always."
