When he met Gaara on his mission to capture the one-tail, he instantly fell in love with the brave jinchuuriki despite his orders. Bringing him to the Akatsuki was the hardest thing he had ever done. Seeing him come back to life convinced him they were meant to be together. He had faked his own death by making a clone with a substantial amount of his chakra to fight Sasuke and exploding it, making it look like he had died in the fight. He drifted in and out of consciousness for a few days from chakra depletion, eventually waking up in a comfortable room in the Kazekage's house. Gaara had found him.
