Chapter two
Well, now I knew there was more out there than just me. Vampires and werewolves were real; and I even lived in the same town they did! I wasn't sure if anything else existed, but I'm sure my dad will tell me if he finds something.
The werewolves weren't what I thought they would be. You know, all drooling monsters who attacked people and spread their curse. No, they were actually pretty alright from what dad told me. They didn't shift because some monster bit them or anything; they changed form because of something in their bloodlines. They don't attack people either; they attack vampires. Not the ones here in Forks; but other vampires. That's what actually makes them shift, too; vampires coming into their territory.
The vampires that live here; the Cullens, made a treaty with them forever ago and the wolves leave them alone as long as they stay on their side and leave us poor humans alone.
Well, I know one poor human that is going to find out everything she can about these creatures I've just discovered. Hopefully more than my dad has. I'm gonna watch them first hand; follow them and see what they do. I just have to figure out how; without dad finding out. It wouldn't be pretty if he caught me.
"I'm gonna go for a swim out by the cliffs. I should be back a little after dark." I called out to him from my bedroom, slipping the last of my little toys in their proper hiding places.
"You sure, Mika? It's a little cool for swiming, isn't it?" He called back to me and I groaned.
Leave it to dad to ask questions now.
"Not really. I've seen people going out when it's been colder. Besides, the currents shifted last week so it's bringing in warmer water from the south now. Watch the Weather Cannel, dad." I laughed, hanging a towl around my neck as I started down the stairs.
"Well, be careful while you're out. I don't need you getting sick and having to miss your training." He stood at the bottom of the stairs, watching me closely as I moved past him.
"Yeah, I know. It would be just awful if I was out for a day. It'd really slow me down." I joked with him as he jabbed; twisting effortlessly out the way.
"Okay. Just don't be gone too long." He laughed, straightening himself.
I nodded and headed out the door, glad that he hadn't noticed any of my hidden accessories.
I made it close to the cliffs, but that wasn't where I was really going anyway. I cut through the trees and started on my way up the mountain. It took me close to an hour, but finally I saw the house. I could hear a couple of people outside but I couldn't see anyone yet. I moved closer, spotting the bunch behind the house outside.
I took the towel off my neck and slung it around the tree, shimmying my way up until I could grab a branch. Perched in a nice little hidden spot, I watched them. They looked like they were fighting, but the way they were laughing had me thinking they were just goofing off or something.
I saw the blonde girl from earlier sitting in a lawn chair; I guess she wasn't the goofing type. The others were out there too and they all looked amazing. They moved like I did, only faster. The one blonde boy seemed like he was the one leading this little party.
"Alright, y'all. I wanna see some more focus, now. The Volturi already have a problem with Bella hangin' around; we need to be prepared if they decide to stop by. So, darlin, if you don't mind." He had a deep southern accent and he smiled at the short black-haired girl.
I guess that was his girlfriend or something by the way they were eyeing each other. She took a stance in front of him and before I knew it, he had her pinned on her stomach ten feet from where they started. It was just amazing how fast they were.
They had flipped, twisted, jumped and slid in a series of beautifully graceful moves. It reminded me a lot of the stuff I did everyday, but I could only hope to be that fast.
I made one mistake in the choice of tree for my little hideout. When I moved a little on the branch, some of the pine needles fell off and trickled through the other branches. All five of them looked right at me. I guess they could hear pretty damn good too.
I stayed still, hoping they wouldn't see me through the other trees. If they could see as good as they could hear though, I'd be caught in just a second. Sure enough, the blonde boy and the big stocky dude were at the base of the tree in a flash.
"Who the hell are you? And what do you think you're doin'?" It was the southern guy that asked me, his tone harsh and a little mean.
I blushed and bit my lip, wondering exactly how I was going to explain this.
"Um, well. I kinda saw you guys the other day. I know what you are and I thought you were interesting, so I came to try and watch you. I didn't mean to interrupt; or get caught." I frowned a little; slipping from my branch as I dropped through the branches and flipped to the ground.
I heard a couple gasps, but figured it was from them thinking I was gonna hurt myself or something. I looked up at the blonde, his golden eyes sparkling.
"That still doesn't tell me who you are. And if you know what we are, ain't you scared?" He was trying to scare me, but I wasn't going to budge that easy.
"The name's Mika; and I'm not scared of animal-eating vampires. I know you don't eat people, so why should I be scared." I crossed my arms, smiling a little as I waited for the shock.
"We may not eat on people, but what makes you think we like them?" This time it was the big guy talking, but I caught his little smirk that he tried hiding.
"Could've fooled me. If you didn't like people, why would you live in a place like this? Why not go somewhere without people?" This was too easy.
It was the southern guy who smirked this time. They weren't getting away from this. I wanted to actually use my talents for something other than just a way to fill my day.
"Okay. Mika, it's nice to meet you, but I don't think it's a good idea for you to stay here." Again with trying to get me out of here.
I shook my head, planting my feet firmly in the ground.
"I'm not going anywhere. I don't care what you are, I just want to hang out maybe. I might be human, but I'm not exactly normal. You are the first people I've even met in this town." My voice was little shakier that I wanted, but this was something that had become important to me.
They both looked at me for a second then smiled a little.
"Alright. You just can't say anything to anyone about what we are. Our existence must stay a secret. If everyone knew the truth... Well, let's just say that it wouldn't be pretty for anyone." The big guy spoke, a serious expression on his face.
Well, duh. Even I was smart enough to know that.
"Okay. No problem. I mean, my dad knows but he's known for years. He just told me about it yesterday; right after I saw you guys in town. So, I don't think you have to worry about us spilling your secret." I smiled a little, hopeful for a friendship out of this little accident of mine.
Of course, dad was going to flip when he found out about this. After all, he did tell me not to be around them. But they were so awesome! This was something I could do; something I could use to be a little more like other people. I mean, everyone had at least one friend that was not a family member, right?
"So, what is it y'all are trying to do here?" I looked at the group and raised a brow.
"We are attempting to become a little more prepared physically for a visit from others like us who ain't exactly the friendliest. They seem to like killing first and asking questions later. That's what I'm hoping to prevent." It was the southern one again.
He seemed to be the leader in this little area, though. The one who knew what to do and how to do it. This was the guy I could probably talk to the best.
"So, you're training then? I mean, it's pretty much just practicing different ways and methods of fighting, right?" I knew my eyes were lighting up.
A beautiful blonde scoffed and fixed her hair, looking at me with a smirk. The girl I saw in the sunlight!
"If that is what you would call this. I think of it as a waste of time, but everyone seems certain that it's necessary." She rolled her eyes and sat back in a lawn chair, crossing her legs slowly.
"That would be Rose. She isn't exactly the fightin' type. I'm Jasper, by the way. That's Emmett; over there is my mate Alice and our other brother Edward." He introduced me to everyone rather quickly, stuffing his hands into his pockets.
"Nice to meet everyone. I'm Mika; but you probably already heard that. Um, don't let me crash your study session here. Keep going, please." I perched myself on a little stump and nodded my head toward the little clearing they had just been practicing in.
Jasper gave a little nod and he and Emmett walked to the center. He crouched low as Emmett took a broad stance, his shoulders hunched forward just slightly. In a flash they crashed together in a mass of jumbling arms and legs. I couldn't contain my smile as I watched them in action. This was a sight beyond anything else.
I wanted to jump in and just go for it, but I didn't want to cause any issues either. I stepped forward slowly, raising my brows when Jasper slowed and turned toward me.
"Yes, Mika? You have a question?" He smiled a little, but his eyes were dark.
I bit my lip a little and picked at my finger.
"Well, kinda I guess. Um, you think I could have a go?" My voice was soft and it actually shocked me a little.
I don't think I've ever really whispered like that before.
Jasper's face went blank as he looked at me and Emmett scoffed.
"You really think we're gonna let a little human fight with one of us? We aren't stupid, Mika. You would get hurt and we would get blamed for it." Emmett actually laughed, making me a little pissed, to be honest.
Jasper nodded though, and that just made me more mad.
"Em's right, darlin'. There's no way that you could even stay standing against one of us; much less actually fight. I'm sorry Mika, but we can't." The way he spoke was like he was talking to a child or something, and that was not a good thing to do.
I jumped before I even thought, twisting around as I slid between his legs beneath him. My arms looped through his and pulled them together at his back, my right leg crossing over his as I pulled him around. He bucked against me and I ducked to the ground, flipping over as he twisted.
I was smiling as he came at me, one hand on a tree at my back while I spotted a mass of logging chain a few feet behind him. I gasped when he lunged at me, barely twisting free before he caught me.
I jumped and tumbled around him, rolling over the chain as I grabbed it when I stood. I twirled it around and around, laughing a little as I got ready to make my move. I heard him grunt and growl a little, running for me again.
He jumped and I crouched, looping the chain around his waist as he landed on his feet. I twisted the chain a few more times, bringing it tight. I dashed for a tree and threw the chain around it, pulling it tight. He was all trussed up against the tree and still fighting, but I pulled harder.
His fingers dug into the bark as I came around his back. I spun once and brought my foot against the small of his back, hurting myself more than him most likely. I winced once and pulled the chain tighter; stopping only when I hear a faint cracking. I placed my knee into his back and nudged, leaning closer to him.
"So, you still think I'm gonna get hurt? I'm more than just your average human, you know." I whispered softly, a slight giggle in my voice.
"Whoa, Mika! That was awesome!" Emmett's holler made me jump slightly, my knee digging into Jasper's back a little more.
He grunted a little and relaxed his arms.
"Okay. You win." I heard a little desperation in his voice and I let go of the chain.
"That wasn't the point, Jasper. It wasn't to prove I could win; it was to prove I could fight just like you." I stepped back, kicking a loose end of the chain to let it fall around him.
He turned toward me and rubbed his arms, a little smile on his lips.
"Mika, I didn't think you actually knew what you were doin'. You're right. You ain't a normal human. If you had been just a little stronger, you could've killed me right there. That's never happened before." He wasn't exactly shocked, but there was a level of awe in his voice.
I smiled a little, looking at my feet.
"I just thought you should see what I could do before you just wrote me off. Kinda made me mad, actually." I laughed a little, glad to know that I could actually fight something supernatural.
They laughed a little and looked at each other. I wasn't sure what that was about exactly, but I kinda didn't want to know either. Jasper nodded at me and crossed his arms.
"Well, I suppose since you ain't all fragile and stuff, you can come around and join in now and then. Might actually be a little useful; a certain level of surprise. We might even be able to hone your skills enough so you can kill a vampire. I wouldn't hold my breath for it, but it might happen." Jasper joined in with the others as they started laughing.
Apparently that was some sort of vampire joke or something. I just smiled though, happy that they were going to let me come back. Now I was just going to have to think of what I was going to tell my dad. And, of course, pray like hell he didn't catch me.
"See? I'm a tough cookie. Now, what are we going to do next?" I knew my eyes were glittering with joy.
They got quiet and looked at me, some of them smiling. It was the little dark haired girl that spoke to me; Alice.
"Well, I would suggest actually getting to know us. You might be okay with us now, but you haven't actually seen what we can do. You need to know as much as you can before you just jump right in. It's the hunting that scares people, you know. Everything else is fine, but the hunting get to them." She sounded a little sad, actually.
I smiled my secret smile, my eyes meeting the grass at my feet.
"Um, I've actually seen that already. On my way here I kinda saw one of you out there and I followed you. It was actually kinda awesome." My voice was trembling a little, wondering what they were going to think about that.
"Really? Well, that's a little surprising. Not that you weren't scared by it, but that you weren't noticed. You must be a very sneaky and quiet little thing." It was Emmett who commented this time; amazement clear in his voice.
"Sneaky my ass. Edward was the one out hunting before all of this; he probably just wasn't paying the least bit of attention. Honestly Eddie, you are gonna get killed one of these days." Rose sneered at him and then looked at me with her brows raised.
She was going to be my biggest obstacle. I could see that attitude and sass in her, and that was going to be her downfall.
"Well, it doesn't matter now. We know that she's skilled and apparently capable, so she might as well put her talents to use." Jasper defended me, Alice smiling at his side as he did.
I felt happy. Finally, somewhere I could be myself and not worry about anything. This was the start of something new for me and I couldn't wait.
A/N: Well, there it is y'all. I do hope you enjoy and review!
