As she finished emptying her stomach contents in the toilet, Kat washed her face and did her make-up. When she was ready, she had to use the toilet again for a wee and noticed a bit of bleeding. But she thought, a bit of spotting is perfectly normal in early stages of pregnancy. She had it when she was pregnant with both the twins and Tommy.

"So you're still up the duff then!" Stacey whispered, sat at the table as Kat walked into the kitchen, "I could hear you from here!"

"Would you keep it down, please?!" Kat whispered as she poured herself a coffee.

"Kat, it's been a week, don't you think you should at least tell Nan?" Stacey said in a low tone, in order not to let Mo overhear. The house phone started ringing.

"No, alright?! And you should shut up 'n all!" Kat said furiously, "she can't find out alright?!" but immediately stopped as Mo walked into the kitchen.

"Here Kat, some doctor on the phone is askin' for ya…" Mo told Kat as she handed her the phone. Kat took the phone and walked into the other room.

"What do you think the doctor called for? Hope it's nothing serious…" Mo said as she sat down at the table beside Stacey.

"I dunno…" Stacey made up.

"Cheers darlin'" Kat told her customer as she gave her change.

"Listen, nan was asking questions about that doctor's phone call this morning…" Stacey told Kat, as she stood beside her on the stall.

"Yeah? And what did you tell her?" Kat asked Stacey, with her hands folded across her furry black coat.

"the truth, I don't know anything…" Stacey replied, "but really, what was that all about?"

"Nothing special, just to confirm what I already know… blood test came back positive…" Kat said, not looking Stacey in the eye.

"Right… so the test wasn't poxy then?" Stacey added sarcastically.

"Very funny," Kat added.

"Look there he is…" Stacey uttered, looking across the road.

"Who?" Kat asked.

"Alfie… just in case you changed your mind…" Stacey said.

Kat looked up to see Alfie by the Vic, "No, I haven't!" Kat snapped.

"You'll regret this you know…" Stacey warned Kat, as a customer approached their stall.

Kat frowned, "Take over, will ya? I'm gonna go get a coffee from the café…" she told Stacey as she took off her waist apron and left.

"Hi Carol, a coffee please," Alfie asked at the till of the café.

"Yeah in a minute, I'll give this to Kat first," Carol replied.

"Oh," Alfie looked around to see Kat seated at the table at the very end of the café, "it's alright, I'll take it to her," Alfie told Carol with a smile.

When Alfie's coffee was done, he took hold of both mugs and walked over to Kat's table, "here you go…" Alfie said as he handed her, her coffee.

"Cheers," Kat said as she looked up surprised to see Alfie and took her mug of coffee.

"Mind if I join you?" Alfie asked politely, for once.

"No, it's alright," Kat uttered.

"How are you doing today?" Alfie asked Kat, trying to build a civil conversation.

"I'm fine…" Kat didn't look Alfie in the eye.

"You look a bit different…" Alfie said, smiling.

"What d'ya mean different?!" Kat snapped.

"In a good way… it's like you have this shine on your face, it's like you're… what's the word? … glowing!" Alfie commented.

"No, I don't!" Kat snapped again, widening her eyes.

"yeah, you have that beautiful sparkle," Alfie said, smiling.

"Oh get a life Alfie!" Kat yelled as she stood up and left. Alfie just looked at her leave, wondering what could have he possibly said wrong to put her in such a bad mood.

"Any progress?" Kat asked Stacey as she arrived on the stall.

"Yeah, we sold four of these dresses, hundred quid in total!" Stacey said with a smile.

"That's brilliant!" Kat said smiling.

"listen Nan just told me, she thought of taking the boys up to visit uncle Charlie and I was thinking of taking Lilly to the park after school… if you want a chat with Alfie, the afternoon's all yours…" Stacey explained.

"I already had a chat with him in the café, I have got nothing else to say to him!" Kat snapped.

"Fine, suit yourself! I'm done trying!" Stacey said furiously. Kat looked up to see Alfie chatting with Ian by the fruit stall and started to think twice.

"Alfie!" Kat called out his name. She decided to go talk to him after all.

"hello again Kathleen!" Alfie joked around.

"Alfie, please be serious for once… I was thinking, do you want to come over around 4 o'clock when we close down the stall? I want to talk to ya about something…" Kat explained.

"Really?" Alfie asked surprised.

"yeah, and don't worry… Nan, Stacey and the kids aren't gonna be there, so no one's gonna bother us," Kat added.

"okay, see ya!" Alfie said with a smile, before Kat left.

"Did you hear that?" Alfie turned around smiling to Ian Beale, "we're gonna have the place to ourselves!" he added with a grin on his face

"Yeah don't get your hopes up, mate!" Ian replied.

"But it's a start ain't it? This could actually be it!" Alfie said happily.

At exactly 4pm the intercom buzzed, "who is it?" Kat asked through the phone.

"It's me Alfie…" Alfie said.

"Come on up," Kat said as she pressed the button to open the door for him.

"Hi…"Alfie said as he walked up the stairs.

"Hey, I'm glad you came…" Kat said, sort of smiling, "come on, in the bedroom, just in case Stacey gets back early, we won't be interrupted,"

"Alright…" Alfie said with a smile as he followed her in her bedroom, "so what's this about then? …is it the kids?"

Kat said down on the bed and Alfie did too, beside her.

"No they're fine… it's about us actually…" Kat started.

"Listen Kat, if it's about the divorce-" Alfie added.

"No, it's not about that… it's… well I don't know how to say this really…" Kat couldn't say it.

"Come on Kat, you can tell me anything…" Alfie told her, as he held her hand.

"Like when I tried to tell you about Harry you mean?" Kat made a face.

"I know, but I'm listening now…" Alfie added, feeling hopeful.

"You know I swore, I wouldn't tell ya… that I'd deal with this on my own… but something's telling me that I can't…" Kat couldn't help a tear fall down her face.

"Deal with what?" Alfie asked, confused.

"This…" Kat told him, as she placed a hand on her tummy.

"I don't understand…" Alfie said confused, looking at Kat and her tummy.

"Come here," Kat told him as she took his hand and placed it on her tummy together with hers, but her faint smile soon turned to shock when she felt sharp pain across her lower abdomen.

"Ohh…" she uttered.

"What's wrong Kat?" Alfie asked still having the faintest idea of what was going on.

"I'm bleeding…" Kat uttered, crying, clutching her abdomen.

"What's that supposed to mean? Why is that wrong?" Alfie asked, confused.

"Because I'm pregnant! …with our baby!" Kat raised her voice.

"Baby?" Alfie asked with widened eyes, "you're pregnant?! What do you mean you're bleeding? How much?!" Alfie said shouting, as he stood up from the bed.

"Enough to know I'm not pregnant anymore!" Kat said, crying.
