CHAPTER ONE – Case one: Child's play
Mai signed as she did paperwork at SPR. It had been three months since their last case and no one else had come. Her brother and sister were at their part time jobs to help pay the rent despite Yuuki's protest, Yuuki was at her therapist session with Yasuhara who was her boyfriend while her sister was sorting out their parent's life saving money. As for Emily she was taking a vacation to catch up with her family after they sorted their problems out.
"Um hello is this SPR?" A woman with dark black hair walked in.
"Yes this is SPR are you the three o'clock appointment?" Mai asked politely. Didn't clients read the sign SPR before they walked in, it happened everytime…?
"Yes I'm Miss Miyami but just call me Mina" The woman said shakily. Mai showed her to the room and the woman sat down before Mai left to get Naru and Lin then went to make some tea, the water already boiled having her arrive in time as Miya started talking
"You said you're the orphanage is haunted?" Naru asked as Lin typed "Can you explain why?"
"Well it's been haunted for a while about two years but during those years there was only things moving and room going cold but nothing serious" Mina started pausing to take a sip of tea "It was until the children started getting bruising when they wake up and complain about someone watching them in the night, one of the girls was pushed down the stairs and broke her leg and arm and two boys almost drowned in the nearby pond"
"Is there anything that could have triggered these incidents" Naru asked coldly ignoring Mai's glare
"There are these business men trying to buy the orphanage offering high prices but I've turned them down, and a few weeks ago when my husband died by a gunshot they tried accusing me of murdering him but if it wasn't for a girl passing by seeing the culprit I would have given in" Mina said sobbing as Mai comforted her. Mai gave Naru a 'you better take this case or else' look, not that he was worried
"We'll take you case Miss Miyami, but we'll need three bedrooms one for base with lots of plug ins and two for sleeping quarters" Naru said closing his folder "Leave you contact and details with my assistant Mai, we'll be there the day after tomorrow" With that he left back to his office while Lin quickly finished typing before leaving as well
"Thankyou for taking my case" Mina thanked then left after giving Mai her contact details and address
"Mai call everyone except Emily and tell them to arrive at nine" Naru said coming from his office "After that tea" He went back to his lair as Stephan liked to call it. Mai called everyone before bringing tea to Naru who was reading a book
"Everyone is able to come but Yuuki can't come till the next day we arrive because of some training for something" Mai stated to Naru "Alicia also is going to France for this exhibition with my brother and sister for their job, they can't miss it or else they'll lose their jobs"
"Alright, then now you still have paperwork" Mai glowered at him muttering 'boyfriend', 'kind' and 'jerk'
Mai stared at the orphanage, it was huge and looked like a mansion with a beautiful backyard. She saw children playing in the backyard and smiled. Miss Miyami came and showed them to her rooms before leaving saying to call her if they needed anything. Naru sent everyone out on tasks while he told her to sleep to get information, and sleep she did.
Dream…
Mai found herself on the astral plane but didn't see Gene anywhere. A scene appeared and saw the orphanage and saw children playing soccer in the backyard. There was an older girl about seventeen with brown hair that looked oddly familiar, and it wasn't till she saw her face did she gasp.
"Isn't that Yuuki?" Mai thought watching the older girl she saw as an older sister play with kids. She saw Miss Miyami walk out with an older man with black hair beside her and noted it must be her husband, she called the kids to come and get ready for dinner and they all followed except for Yuuki. Mai watched as she cleaned up the area before stopping when she heard sobbing and looked around, Mai watched as Yuuki followed the sobbing to a shed and opened it to see small girl probably no older than five on the ground crying.
"Are you alright?" Yuuki asked softly and the girl looked up eyes red from crying
"The d-door wouldn't o-open a-and I thought n-no one would f-find me" The girl sobbed and Yuuki patted the girls head softly smiling
"Your safe now so no need to be scared anymore" she said before she picked up the girl "Let's go have dinner with the others, you can stay with me if you want too" The girl sniffed but managed a small smile
"Can I call you nee-chan" She asked with a hopeful smile
"Sure call me whatever you want, and if you're scared come to me okay?" Yuuki said
"Um I see this man in the forest staring at us but when I tell someone they say no one is there" The girl said and Yuuki froze and looked at the girl with a thoughtful look "Am I crazy?"
"No you're not crazy you just have a special gift, just don't go near the man okay Akemi" Yuuki stated
"Okay nee-chan" The girl Akemi said brightly before the scene disappeared and Mai was once again staring into nothing in the astral plane. Shouldn't she be waking up now? She still didn't know how to do that yet, usually Gene did it or someone outside would wake her. She then suddenly felt someone saying her name and she felt herself waking up
(End of dream)
"Hey she's waking up" A voice said. Mai blinked her eyes open before shooting up. Bad decision. The next thing she was doing was holding her aching head, she could hear whoever she hit groaning on the ground
"Mai, Yuuki are you okay?" The voice belonged to Ayako. Mai opened her eyes to see Yuuki on the ground rubbing her forehead before someone hugged her which was Ayako "Mai we were so worried when you wouldn't wake up" She was lying on the couch of the base
"Yuuki what are you doing here?" Mai asked as the girl stood up with the help of Yasu "And sorry"
"Mai you've been asleep since yesterday" Yuuki answered bluntly
"W-what" Mai gasped shocked. The dream was short though but a whole day had past
"No matter what we did we couldn't get you to wake up" Yuuki added and Mai noticed a head poking from behind Yuuki's legs, Yuuki saw this and smiled brightly "Oh Mai this is Akemi one of the children here, this is the orphanage I was at when my parents…passed" Yuuki said smiling sadly at the last part before pushing the little girl forward gently "Akemi this is Mai one of my friends I told you about" Akemi waved shyly
"Hello" She said quietly clutching onto Yuuki's skirt
"Hello nice to meet you Akemi" Mai greeted kindly. Did this girl have psychic abilities?
"Akemi why don't you go play with the other kids outside, I'll come play soon okay" Yuuki said who knelt to the girl's level
"Okay nee-chan" Akemi ran off to play with kids outside with Ayako accompanying her. Yuuki turned to Mai and rose an eyebrow making Mai wonder if she did something wrong
"Was your dream about me and Akemi?" Yuuki asked making Mai freeze "You talk in your sleep and I have telepathy, that's why I couldn't come yesterday because I was training my psychic abilities" She added and Mai blushed embarrassed at the first part making Yuuki smirk "And to answer your thought yes Akemi has psychic abilities, she has Clairvoyance but can't see strong spirits yet and Telekinesis though she can only make objects shake at the moment"
"What about you?" Mai asked
"The same just add telepathy, and Pyrokinesis" Yuuki listed making Mai gap "And after this case you're going to be training with me" Mai looked at her in confusion
"But I can't do that much" She mumbled making Yuuki look at her in disbelief
"Mai you have astral projection, Clairvoyance, Psychometry, Retrocognition, and have the possibility of having telekinesis as well and you say you can't do much" Yuuki stated shaking her head "And it's possible you can do more"
"Where's everyone else?" The only ones in base were her, Yuuki and Naru
"Naru sent them out on tasks while Ayako looked after you, and your boyfriend stayed by you side the whole time before we forced him to clean up himself, eat and sleep" Yuuki replied "He should be here soon…" At that moment Naru walked in and Yuuki practically ran out making Naru give Mai a questioning look making her shrug
"Yuuki said you had a dream" Naru stated but before Mai could say anything he added "Telepathy"
"Yeah but it was about Yuuki and Akemi when Yuuki was still here, Akemi said she saw a man in the forest when no one else did so it would have been a ghost" Mai explained "I don't know what help that could've been"
"That's alright" Naru said and asked "How are you feeling?"
"Head still hurts from when I hit Yuuki sitting up" Mai said sheepishly
"Dummy that's why you don't do that" Naru said making Mai glare before she pouted, Naru just gave his famous smirk. He enjoyed teasing Mai and seeing her reactions
