Chapter two

Beach panic

When Harry woke up, his eyes were crusty and glued shut and his cheek was covered in sand. His arms were pulsing painfully and his nose felt stuffed. He sat up, groaning and he looked around. The beach was empty, he was alone, the jungle was behind him and the surf was particularly violent that morning. The memories of yesterday struck his mind, the crazy lizards, the damned Dursleys leaving him behind on the island. Immediate panic overwhelmed Harry and he nearly keeled over, he thought about everyone he left behind, the thought of them never knowing he died on this godforsaken island. So this was how he was going to die? Harry glanced at his arms and saw blood soaked pieces of shirt wrapped around them. He remembered the thumbprint sized marks on his arms, the excruciating pain he felt. His lips felt dry and another thing struck him, if he doesn't find water soon he'll die of thirst.

Harry got to his feet, the cloth of his makeshift bandages scratching against his wounds, making them even more painful and he walked into the jungle, trainers stuffed with sand. The foliage was less than friendly; thorns tearing at his chest, his bare ankles itchy with poison oak and ivy, but it filtered painful hot sun and were soothing to Harry's sunburnt shoulders. His lips and throats became increasingly dry and cracked, and after another hour of basically limping, Harry ended up walking into a cold swift stream. Harry cupped the water in his hands, sucking thirstily, barely thinking about how it might be riddled with bacteria. He looked up from the stream and saw something astonishing: it was extremely odd, strange and it was straight from a picture book he saw. There was a herd of five stegosauruses walking slowly, across the stream, parallel to where Harry sat. They had dull eyes, much like a cow's, their plates were very similar to that of the books. The tail had spikes at its end, swaying back and forth. Harry stared with awe, his mind trying to come up with memories of learning about dinosaurs. They were supposed to be dead, they were dead millions of years ago but here they were moving in one herd, not paying Harry any mind.

He scrambled to his feet, the wounds on his arms not bothering him for he was numb with shock. When the herd slipped into the plants and out of sight, Harry stumbled in their path, trying to catch one last look at them.

Stegosaurus! Harry was smiling for the first time in hours, and he walked leisurely along the stream, occasionally taking a drink. His wand was against his thigh and he noticed how there were wounds on his legs but less noticeable than the ones that were present on his arms. His stomach rumbled with hunger and he ended up in a clearing, seeing another astonishing sight: dinosaurs with long, graceful necks were feeding on the tallest of trees, vaguely reminding Harry of the giraffes he saw at the zoo. Wait- long necked lizards…? That didn't make any sense, and lizards that ate plants for that matter? He didn't know much about animals, but he was almost completely sure that there was no such thing as present day Herbivorous lizards. Harry shook his head at the thought; maybe it was a dinosaur thing. Thinking of lizards, he hasn't had any encounter with a snake lately which was odd, why didn't the snakes want to hang out with their prehistoric cousins? Why couldn't he speak to the stegosaurus or the Crazy Lizards? Harry told himself that he'll test out the theory later. Harry strode across the clearing, closer to the long necked dinosaurs, he spotted dinosaurs with a duck bill surrounded by nests of eggs covered in plants, and they sensed his presence.

Harry tried not being as alarmed as he actually was. The duck billed dinosaurs honked at him, yet not in a baleful manner, Harry, much to his surprise did not understand what it could have possibly meant. He crossed the horizontal area of the clearing towards the river which was growing larger and flowing slower, the duck billed dinosaurs continued to honk at him nearby and Harry carefully ignored them. He went back into the jungle, the long roars and the honking of the dinosaurs fading away and along the way of the river he saw dinosaurs with plated spikes on its back, a dinosaur that reminded him of Voldemort with it's perfectly round head, and a lone, ten foot tall dinosaur with two crests perched on its head. Harry stared at this particular dinosaur, not familiar with it at all, it looked right back and hooted softly. Harry wasn't entirely sure whether this animal was a plant eater like the others because the others did keep their distance. Harry pulled out his wand and kept it in front of him and he walked past it from across the river and it followed. Harry wondered if this animal could swim, it snapped its head back and it took a split second to realize that it was going to throw something.

Protect me! His body went tense, his mind was ready to start screaming, but the animal was hooting curiously Harry looked at it and saw that he had a shield that resembled Protego up. On the shield was a white glob of saliva, so whatever that saliva had it wasn't the safest thing so Harry broke into a run despite everything. Harry wondered how he did that, a silent spell- he didn't even say the incantation correctly. He pointed his wand in the direction of his possible pursuer and shouted a stunning spell just in case. He didn't care where it went, he just wanted to distract the dinosaur because he had proof that it didn't want to be friendly. When he felt that he lost the dinosaur he paused, gasping and he turned to the river, sipping the water. Harry felt struck stupid when another thought fluttered across his mind: why didn't he send up red sparks? Harry pointed his wand at the sky, prayed to whoever ran the planet and said the spell. He honestly did not want to stay in the spot and wait to get rescued, for any other animal might find him. He continued walking down the river in his own silence, a presence making him uneasy, he stopped and he looked around. He felt completely and utterly alone. He looked at the thickest parts of foliage and sworn he saw the patterned body of a dinosaur. He hoped to god it wasn't the crazy Lizards, and he still couldn't hear conversations of any of these animals. Harry continued walking, wand in his hand, poised to fight, it then happened all at once. The first dinosaur that rammed into him was around his height, maybe a foot taller. The tackle was so strong that Harry fell over and stars danced in his eyes. He spun around, on the ground, attempting to get up and he saw another dinosaur coming towards him at full speed.

"Stupefy!" Harry waved his wand wildly, heart and brain pitching into overdrive. The dinosaur was hit on its chest and it collapsed in a heap, the dinosaur that was on top of him had a rancid breath and a claw on its foot that grazed his ankle. He pointed the wand upward at the dinosaur and said the stunning spell again. The dinosaur fell unconscious on top of him, its skin was leathery and hot, and the saliva that was currently dripping onto Harry was also hot. Harry did not have time to contemplate why this lizard's skin and spit was so warm for he slipped from under the heavy animal and bolted off until he could no longer see the two dinosaurs. What were those things? What sort of lizard took their prey by surprise and worked together with other lizards? Harry never thought about it before, but he has never seen any sort of lizard work together with another lizard to eat the same food. Then again, it could be a dinosaur thing. He sent out red sparks again and he wondered whether or not he'll go to Azkaban for using magic at this level here. It was a dangerous situation, so maybe he'll be let off? He also wondered whether he'll get in trouble for using Avada Kadevra on the dinosaurs. Harry shook his head and he continued walking, only to freeze when he heard a blood chilling roar pierce the jungle silence.

AN: aw yiss! Thank you guys so much for understanding! I'll be responding to the few reviews I have.

So here's the reason why realistically speaking, Harry would not be able to communicate with Dinosaurs:

Each of the dinosaurs has been fused randomly with avian, amphibian and reptilian DNA making it almost impossible to see whether or not the dinosaur would be able to understand him. Plus, I believe that he can only speak to snakes and not any other reptile. It was not specified on whether Harry could speak to other reptiles like alligators, small lizards or amphibians, like frogs. The dinosaurs in the book have been described to have more mammalian characteristics than reptilian with warm saliva and skin and unusual breeding and feeding behaviors which would normally not correlate with reptiles. I did a bit of research and very few reptiles eat plants and since Harry has limited knowledge on reptiles based off of what he learned in primary school he will think that no reptile eats plants, so the sauropods eating plants will be strange and uncharacteristic to him if he's relating the dinosaurs to lizards.

Oh and Harry doesn't learn aguamenti until his sixth year.
