Chapter 2

When I got home, I couldn't even concentrate on my homework. I kept going over in my head the conversation that happened in the hallway with Sofia. I mean, I can't believe she had to make a statement in front of everybody. Everything about that conversation just seemed too weird.

The next day at school was like a dream and a nightmare at the same time, literally.

When I got to my locker, there was a post-it on it reading, "Hey, it's Percy. I want to talk to you next to Ms. Peterson's room at 8:30."

I looked down at my watch and realized that I had 3 minutes so I ran toward Ms. Peterson's classroom. When I got there, I didn't see anyone so I started walking over to the lockers and all of the sudden, I saw my legs in the air and then darkness. That was when I had the craziest dream.

It started in a water park.

I was at Wet-n-Wild with Percy and we were in line for the water coaster. He turned around and kissed me and I was in heaven. That was when everything went wrong. All of the sudden there was a flash of bright light and both of us standing in front of these massive human beings. The one sitting in the chair in the middle stood up, which shook the floor, and said, "I am Zeus, the god of the skies. I brought you here because soon you will determine the fate of the world; it lies in your hands. I know you don't even know what you are yet but soon it will all make sense."

Everything disappeared and I woke up with a bright light shining in my eyes and a white dress on that felt like paper. The air smelled hand sanitizer with the faint smell of blood. After a few minutes, my eyes adjusted to the light and I realized I was in some kind of giant machine. I looked around and saw my dad and two doctors staring at me with surprised expressions.

Slowly I was moved out of the machine and I overheard one of the doctors say, "Sir, I honestly don't know how your daughter is alive, she has been in a coma for a week. This is a miracle!"

My dad ran over to me with tears on his face. He hugged me and said, "Honey, are you okay. I was so worried about you. Right after I dropped you off, I got a call from the school saying they found you on the floor unconscious.

I looked at him and said, "Dad, I'm fine. Was I really out for a week?"

He looked at me, his eyes watery and said, "Yes honey, but you look as good as new. Its amazing!"

The doctor walked up to my dad and I and said, "Mr. Chase we would like to keep your daughter overnight just to make sure she's ready to go home."

My dad looked at me and asked, "Honey is that alright with you?"

I rolled my eyes and said, "Dad, I'm fine you don't have to worry about me!"

He gave me one last kiss on the cheek and the doctor took me to one of the hospital rooms. As we were passing other rooms on the way, I thought I saw Percy in the room next to me. But that is crazy, how the heck could he be here? I must have been imagining things or I hit my head too hard when I fell. Just to be sure I asked the nurse that was looking for something in one of the cabinets, "Just wondering, what is the name of the patient next to me?"

The nurse took a quick look at her clipboard and said, "His name is Percy Jackson. Funny, it looks like you both were in a coma for a week and you are from the same school. Well anyway, try to get some sleep okay, you probably will be going home tomorrow."

I sat there staring at the ceiling and thinking to myself, "how did Percy get here?" and "did he have that same crazy dream too?" Nothing made sense anymore. I was so tired, confused. Not long after, I was surprised to wake up to the sun streaming through the window.

I just sat there for an hour, watching the nurses and doctors running back and forth from room to room when finally, the doctor came in and said, "Annabeth, it's time for you to come home. Your dad is at work so we have a cab that is ready to take you home." He was halfway out the door when he said, "Oh, and I hope you don't mind having another patient ride with you."

I said, "No, that's fine" and got out of bed.

I was surprised that the other person was Percy. He looked at me for a second and then quickly looked away and got into the cab. I got in right after him and for the entire ride there was awkward silence.

That was until there was a flat tire. The cab driver pulled over to the side of the road and said, "I am so sorry!"

I smiled and said back, "Oh, my house is only a few blocks away, I can walk. Thanks for the ride."

Little did I know I wouldn't actually make it home.
