Dawn left her classroom and started off towards the entrance. She was curious to know who would possibly want her. Her first assumption was that it was another adult, wanting to hurt her too. She pushed open the door and looked around for where the person was. The courtyard was empty, the only dragons she saw where on the streets doing their business.
"Hello?" Dawn echoed. She heard a 'psst' and looked over to see a dragon her age. This one was yellow with a black underbelly. Two straight horns started from the back of her head and pointed backwards. She was hidden behind a line of bushes. Dawn's heart skipped a beat. She was afraid she was going to hurt her.
"Come here," she said to Dawn, but in a friendly tone. She sat down as Dawn came over.
"Did you call for me?" Dawn asked her.
The other dragon nodded and looked her over.
"How? Surely they wouldn't let a student take another out of class?" Dawn said, stumbling over her words in disbelief.
"I slipped a message onto her desk before the class started. I pretended I was an adult." She said, proud of herself.
"But why?"
"I couldn't just let those other dragons harass you." she replied.
Dawn purred. "That doesn't really answer the question,"
"When Beam was attacking you I heard the dragons whispering." The other dragon began, "They don't like you just because your scales are black. I thought it was not fair and I wanted to help you."
"That's his name?" Dawn said, the other dragon nodded. "What's yours?
"My name is Autumn," she answered. Dawn loved that name. "How about you?"
"Uh... I-I don't know my name," Dawn replied. Autumn cocked her head in question as she went on, "When I was born I was confined in a room for years. Today is my first day out." Dawn was really confused about what was going on with her life.
"Oh..." Autumn said in a hushed tone, "Hey, since we're both out of the school, do you want to leave?"
Dawn's eyes widened. She did not want to get in trouble, but did Autumn really have to ask twice? "Yeah! That would be great!"
Autumn shrunk down, "Shh, don't let anyone hear you," Autumn was smiling. Dawn was happy that she finally found someone who wasn't mean to her. But could she trust Autumn? She was starting to give the impression that she was malignant.
Without a word Autumn crept away, pushing open the gate carefully and quietly. Dawn followed cautiously, staying low to the ground. She followed Autumn through the outskirts of town, ducking from the dragons that went about. Eventually they had made it all the way to the edge of the nearby cliff.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Autumn said, her voice trailing off as they both stared at the horizon. The ocean below gently lapped at the side of the cliff.
"I've never seen anything like it," Dawn beamed in awe, then corrected herself, "And by never I really do mean, like, never in my life!"
"Let me show you something cool," Autumn said excitedly, she backed up a few steps then ran straight towards the edge and jumped.
Dawn's heart dropped. "Autumn! No!" She ran forward to try to grab her, but couldn't.
She then stopped in amazement, Autumn was flying! She was flapping with her wings, keeping herself in the air. Dawn never knew that that's what wings were used for. She watched on as Autumn flew in an arc back to the edge and landed next to her.
"Woah! How did you do that?" Dawn stammered, once again her tail was shaking like crazy.
Autumn grinned at the look on Dawn's face. "I'll show you. Stand like this," she said, then positioned Dawn's front legs in front of her and bent them slightly, then moved her back legs behind her at a awkward angle. She accidently touched the cuts on Dawn's legs, who let out a yip of pain, she quickly apologized. "That's how you need to be in the air." Autumn spread her own wings to demonstrate how to move them. She showed Dawn all she needed to know.
"Wait! You want me to fly off the edge!?" Dawn shrieked. Autumn nodded, surprised that it wasn't obvious. She smiled in amusement, "A-alright... I guess I'll try it..." Dawn stuttered.
She was scared to death that she wouldn't be able to do it. She took a few steps back, mimicking Autumn, then took a stressed deep breath and ran off the edge and spread her wings. She closed her eyes, afraid that if she opened them she would find herself falling to certain death. She began flapping her wings like she was taught. She slowly opened her eyes, she was doing it! She screamed in delight as she soared through the air, Autumn flying beside her. The two were giggling when they noticed that their wings were flapping in sync. They landed on the cliff and burst into laughter. They were having so much fun!
In the corner of her eye she spotted a large golden dragon observing them both. Her eyes widened, but then she blinked- the dragon disappeared.
Autumn noticed her expression. "What's the matter?" she asked in concern.
Dawn shook her head. "I thought I saw something, but it was nothing." She explained, her eyes gazing into Autumns.
"You have pretty eyes," She commented, noticing her vivid amber eyes. "I never noticed them." She remarked.
"Really?" Dawn murmered, "What color are they?"
"You mean you've never seen your own face?" Autumn said recoiling her head in surprise. Dawn gave a shy nod, "Well, they are... amber. I think that's what that color is called. But you need to understand that they are beautiful."
Dawn purred as she smiled. Amber eyes... she thought to herself. In the distance she heard a bell being rung. It was the end of school.
"You better go, that blue dragon will probably be coming to get you," Autumn said, "It was so nice to meet you."
Dawn looked over her shoulder as she began to run off back towards the school. "You too!"
She hurried through town, backtracking their path to the school. She made it just in time, the blue dragon had arrived as she did. She paced over to him and they walked off towards the building that housed the room she stayed in. The sun was setting as she was placed into the room, the door slamming behind her.
She was no longer lonely.
