"Jug, I just can't wrap my head around Jason's murder. It's like all of Riverdale has taken a turn for the worse." Betty said, her head snuggled against Jughead's chest. The movie had been over for a while now, so the light from the moon shining through the window lit up her face.
"I agree. I feel like whoever did this wanted all this to happen. For the town to go into panic. They must be planning something." Jughead traced circles on Betty's back through her shirt as they whispered back and forth.
"But why would someone want to send a whole town into panic mode. What would they want to achieve?" His question floated through Betty's mind for a few minutes before they drifted off to sleep.
The nightmare was different from her other ones. She was trapped in a room. It was dark, only one window in the ceiling. When she tried to stand up, she saw her wrists tied to a pole. Looking around, frantically, figures started approaching her.
"Betty, oh Betty. Why do you have so many flaws?" one said.
"Just like her sister, a disgrace." another shouted.
"Stupid, ugly, lazy, disappointment."
She closed her eyes, trying to will the voices away.
"Betty… Betty...Betty" She opened her eyes again to Jughead running his fingers through her hair, propped up on his elbow leaning over her.
"Hey what's wrong? Betts what happened." She was still shaking, but she would not cry in front of him. Obviously not ready to talk, Jug lied down and pulled her into his chest. She grasped his shirt, which smelled like heaven, and listened to his heart beat.
"It wasn't a big deal, just a nightmare."-no matter how much Betty wanted to confide in him more, she couldn't tell him what was really wrong- "I was being chased by a robber, he had a gun and then I woke up right when he took a shot."
"Well there's no reason for you to be afraid anymore, you have a big strong boyfriend to protect you now!" Maybe it was the way he lightened to mood, or his adorable bedhead, but Betty felt a strong urge to kiss him. So she did. By tilting her head up, he knew what she wanted and went with it. They captured each others lips and Betty smiled into the kiss. She would never get used to the fireworks he sent through her with his touch or the butterflies she gets in her stomach with him. The moment only lasted a few seconds before Betty's shrill alarm pulled them out of their trance.
"Crap, my mom's gonna be here any minute, get under the bed." Betty said hurriedly. Jug, while wondering why Betty still had to get up on weekends, rolled under the bed and pulled his feet up so they didn't poke up, just in time as Alice swung the door open.
"Still in bed? Why don't you get your lazy self up and actually start getting ready. I did your laundry, your welcome. Don't forget about your jog and I hope your homework is all done. You can have a boiled egg or some toast for breakfast." With that, Alice shut the door and you could hear her as she descended back down the stairs.
"You never told me how strict your mom was. A morning jog, one egg for breakfast, this is borderline abuse." Jug said as he slipped out from under the bed.
"No it's nothing really. I don't eat much in general, just forget about it." He couldn't read the look on her face, but he didn't want to push the subject. He walked over and held her waist while she slipped her arms to hang loosely around his neck. Their faces were mere inches apart.
"It seems you have a very busy day ahead of you, I should get going." He captured her lips one last time, caressed her cheek, and disappeared out her window. The smile on her face faded as fast as his presence.
She spent the rest of the day trying to live up to her mother's sky high standards. She skipped her breakfast all together and went for a 2 mile jog. After that she did all her homework and wrote and article for the Blue and Gold. She also tidied up her room and put away her clothes.
"Hey mom, I'm gonna go to Pop's for dinner. Be back in a bit." Betty yelled as she pulled on her coat. Alice appeared from around the corner.
"You're not going anywhere tonight young lady. You've been spending to much time with that Jughead kid. Also don't think I haven't noticed that you stopped wearing makeup, that ugly face of yours making a show. A Cooper lady must always look flawless. You know what, you're grounded for two weeks, no phone. Hand it over and go to your room." Alice said sternly, holding out her hand for Betty's phone.
"Mom that's ridiculous and totally unfair. I've done everything you wanted for as long as I can remember. You can't dictate who I'm friends with to." She frowned, her fists clenching. "I've let you control every part of my life. School, health, my freetime, hell even how I dress. I'm going down to Pop's for dinner. And who said I was going to see Jughead, I had no plans to meet anyone. Obviously because you made me push everyone away!" Betty walked out and left the door swinging behind her. Alice ran into the door frame and yelled,
"Fine, but don't come home expecting a warm welcome!" Betty was too far to hear it, but she knew her mom had slammed the door shut. Skipping Pop's, Betty walked all the way to Jug's trailer in her thin sweater and converse. It was freezing outside, but she had just been expecting to be sitting in the warm diner. When she finally reached the trailer, she knocked on the door and her whole body was trembling from the cold. The door opened and revealed Jug, in a sweatshirt and sweatpants. He look fairly awake, a pen sticking out from behind his ear signalling he had been writing.
"Betty, hey what are you doing here. God your shaking come inside." Jug said, gently grabbing her arm and pulling her inside. He pulled off his sweatshirt, leaving him in just a sleeveless shirt, and helped her put it on.
"Hey Jug, I- I might have just been- been kicked out of my house." She said, shivering as tears welled up in her eyes. Jug knew the hurt she felt and pulled her into his chest. He held her like she was glass about to shatter. His dad walked into the small space, only to back out when he saw Jug comforting his girl, not wanting to interrupt.
"Do you want to tell me what happened?" He asked, motioning to the couch. She followed him over and they sat down. She leaned on his chest and tucked her head into the crook of his neck.
"She yelled at me for spending too much time with you. That I was ugly and shouldn't have stopped wearing makeup. And that I wasn't going to be welcomed back home unless I let her have complete control over me." Betty sighed and Jug felt her breath on his skin.
"First of all, you are the most breathtaking girl I've ever seen. I can't find the words to describe how beautiful you are, and I'm a writer. I hope spending time with me isn't something you regret and even if your mom doesn't want you, I always will" The softness of his voice and the truthfulness in his voice sent warm tingles down her back.
"Thanks you Jug, I love you." She whispered.
"I love you too."
They fell asleep on the couch together, a tangle of limbs and soft snores. FP couldn't help it, he snapped a picture so they could look back at it together one day.
