Serenity After All

Thanks to everyone who read the first chapter. I was actually pretty proud of it, and I hope that this one Is even better, both by my standards and yours. :)

The Beach Task: Part One

Grinding her teeth together, Kaylee reached farther into the engine, grazing the fourth gear lodged in place in the row of sockets.

With some difficulty, she extracted her hand and snatching a wrench from the stool a few feet away, stuffed her arm back into the engine, twisting the bolt holding the piece of machinery in place. The repair would take the better part of an hour, but with a little bit of luck, she could still see the ocean by the time the captain needed her.

Kaylee sighed gazing out the window as she worked, the beautiful blue waters and soft white sand calling to her. Soon.

On the Beach

His grip tightened on her hand as they casually strolled across the gritty sand, her head resting on his shoulder.

"I told you we would finally get to a beach," Wash told Zoe, kissing the top of her head.

"It didn't make me believe you any less, honey," Zoe replied.

Meanwhile, Jayne and Mal marched across the beach, walking up to an extremely small hut that seemed to be made out of some type of tree branches.

Their captain turned to give them one last firm nod before rapping sharply on the flimsy looking door.

"Think this is going to work?" Wash muttered.

"Not a chance."

At the Client's House

"Sure this is the right place, Captain?" Jayne asked, hefting his gun closer to his chest.

"Set the gun down. The last thing we need is him to think we're trying to be threatening."

"But we are trying to be threatening," Jayne complained as Mal knocked on the door.

The door swung open revealing a man a few inches shorter than Jayne with brown hair that was almost black and small beady eyes.

"Malcom Reynolds?" he asked, leaning on the doorframe with a raised eyebrow.

"That's me," he replied, shaking the man's hand.

"Crane," replied their new client, receiving a nod from the captain of Serenity.

Jayne and Mal shoved past Crane into the house, causing him to stumble backwards. Straightening up and closing the door, he showed the pair to a thin couch next to a tiny kitchen.

"So, what can we do for you?" Mal questioned.

Crane reached to the tiny kitchen, snatching a folded piece of paper off the little counter and passing it to Jayne with a steely glare.

He unfolded the paper and tilted it toward Mal who examined the photo of a man with a huge smile plastered on his face.

"That's my brother," he said nodding, "I need you to kill him."

Meh.
