The Grand Tooth Palace housed over billions of teeth. With floating units willed to the brim with teeth all part of the massive Library of Memories that the Tooth Fairy kept. In the lower chambers is where the tooth fairies are housed. Large birdhouses like sculptures with mini cots for each little fairies to use in their time of rest before another night of work. Tooth fairies didn't need to sleep, but it was nice to relax for a moment between shifts.
Baby Tooth flew down to the chambers after spending the rest of her night with Jack. Baby Tooth knew she had to prepare herself for the upcoming comments her sisters would throw at her. Right now, there are over hundred thousands of tooth fairies buzzing in the chamber. Some fairies were leaving to start their shift and other returning to their cots. Baby noticed two fairies, Tiny Tooth and Mini Tooth hovering by their shared space.
"Where were you, Baby?" Tiny Tooth asked
"You know where she was. Sitting on Jack's shoulder all night," Mini Tooth giggled as Baby Tooth rolled her eyes.
"Baby, you sure are spending a lot of time with Jack." Tiny Tooth stated
"We're friends." Baby Tooth answered as both tooth fairies looked at her and looked at each other twittering.
"Baby, we've seen how you look at him. Oh, Jack, you're so wonderful." Mini Tooth mocked her sister. Baby rolled her eyes at her sister's antics. So what if she was just a silly little fairy who a silly little crush. Refusing to attempt her sister was right she rushed passed them and flew to her bed, pulled the colorful sheet covers over her head.
"Mini, you didn't have to tease her so much" Tiny Tooth lectured
"You're so mean," Baby Tooth's said against the silk sheets covering her head.
"It's just light-hearted teasing Baby — no hard feelings. Tiny Tooth and I should head to bed. We're on Australia and New Zealand duties tomorrow. Goodnight Baby Tooth!" Tiny Tooth said as she zoomed out of Baby Tooth's room.
"Yea, not all of us have time to swoon over Mr. Frost" Mini Tooth teased as she flew out of Baby Tooth's room.
Baby Tooth laid in bed. Mini's words rang true; she had a crush. It was a harmless one at that. Baby Tooth was still gathering her share of teeth. She was doing her part as a tooth fairy. The Tooth fairy army's goal is to collect teeth and store them away in the Tooth Palace. If they were called to fight against the forces of evil, there was always another patch of fairies collecting teeth. That was the way it was. There was never time for friendships even among the fairies. It could take over a hundred years to learn each other's names.
What did The Tooth Fairy think about her crush on Jack Frost? What if Tooth decided that Baby couldn't spend time with Jack anymore? A shiver ran toward her body, the horror. Trying to forget the thought, Baby closed her eyes willing herself to go to sleep.
Once Baby Tooth opened her eyes was realized she was no longer in Tooth Palace. She shot out of her cot and looked around her new surroundings. There were walls of white marble with gold veins running toward the marble and the floors made of clear glass. The view was of the stars. Could she have been viewed by Sandy tonight? She flew around the room to find, no door, no window, or not even a crack. She was trapped here. Baby didn't get the sense that she was in danger. This feeling was nothing compared to when the Nightmares attacked the Tooth Palace when Jack saved her from being captured by the Nightmares. However, she didn't like her freedom taken from her either, even if this was just a dream. With another look around the room, Baby noticed a child sitting on the floor. Was the child always in this place? Perhaps, she condoned the child up in her dream. Baby flew to the small child to get a closer look at them. The child could be no more than five years old. Far too young to have any loose teeth. The child had hair light blonde hair and golden eyes that just looked unnatural.
"Hello, child." Baby spoke.
"Hello," the child greeted.
"You understand me?" Never in all her years as a tooth fairy has a child ever replied to her. Baby assumed that the child didn't know Sylvan the language. This must be a dream, and in her dream, a child can speak Sylvan.
"My name is Baby Tooth. What's your name child?"
"My name is Opal" the child answered
"Opal," Baby repeated trying to memorize it. "Do you know where we are, Opal?" she asked
"Yes," Opal said as they walked to a wall and pressed their hand against the wall. Suddenly a door revealed itself in the two. "We're in the SS Wishing Star."
"Wishing Star? We're on a boat?"
"We're on a Starship. I'm tasked to take you to The Evening Star," Opal adds as they began to walk toward the door. What a strange dream, Baby, didn't think she was this creative. To dream of Starships and a child who speaks Sylvan. Baby quickly followed after the child unsure of what exactly would happen next.
"Why does the Evening Star want to see me?"
"To grant you your wish, silly fairy" Opal giggled.
"How do you know I made a wish?" Baby Tooth probed.
It seemed odd for her dream to be centered around a wish. And who was The Evening Star? Baby Tooth had never heard of The Evening Star before. Up until recently, she had only ever known of the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and The Moon On The Moon. Could the Evening Star be another legend? A legend that could grant wishes?
Opal stopped in front of a doorway that had golden letters that spelled out 'Verdict' on top of the door. The two entered the room to see five monitors were playing multiple scenes that didn't make sense to Baby. In the middle of the room was a giant throne and on it was a large woman with bright laminating skin that was so bright, Baby had to cover her eyes.
"Welcome to the SS Wishing Star, Baby Tooth. I'm the Evening Star, but you are welcome to call me Star if it pleases you. Opal is one of my many angels. Also, the angel that heard your wish."
"Opal heard my wish," Baby asked.
"I was the one who sent it to The Evening Star to listen to it too. It was a wish made by someone with a pure heart."
"I don't understand."
"Before I grant your wish. I wanted to meet you in-person," Star waved her hand. Suddenly all the screens began to play the video of Baby making her wish. The video played again and again stuck in a loop. Star smiled at the tooth fairy who looked overwhelmed. "And clarify the wish a little more. I believe I know what you want. I just want to hear the words to my thought."
"What do you mean?"
"You said, and I quote "'I wish I could do something for Jack…" end quote. Now tell me little Baby Tooth what do you want to do for Jack?"
"My apologize Star. I'm just a little baffled right now. What do you mean pure-of-heart? Are you a legend that grants wishes? The light is so strong here that I can't see you." Baby Tooth voiced
"Oh, that's right. My splendor is too awesome for you to see." Instantaneously, a pair of sunglass that fit Baby Tooth preciously was on her face. For the first time she entered the room she could see clearly. The Verdict room was different than the previous place. The ceiling was made of glass, but she could look at the stars and the galaxy here. A very creative dream indeed, to dream of Outer Space. She must be closer to the Man On The Moon than Toothiana. Five monitors were playing her wish video over and over but the sound muted to allow for their dialogue. The floor was also made of glass with lines of silver between the cracks, displaying the vast wonder of the Outer Worlds.
"Baby Tooth, your soul knows who I am. If it didn't, Opal wouldn't have been able to hear your wish. You may not remember this lifetime. Do not remember your previous life, Svetlana?" Star lectured.
Svetlana…how long has it been since she was last called Svetlana. It has been close to 300 years. A relic of the past that name was. Of a time nearly forgotten from Baby Tooth's memory. It somehow manages to reappear in a dream. With the constant knowledge of every tooth's location and direction, Baby couldn't spend the time remembering her past life, her human life. There was no time for that. Wait, Baby didn't know where a new tooth was. This whole time in this dream, she didn't feel the nudge of the Bond to gather teeth. Strange, it didn't bother her either.
"No one has called me that in centuries. How do you know that name?"
"You've made wishes to me before little one. But, you were far too sick for me to grant."
"Right, I was sick when I was eighteen. I didn't get better…until the day I…became a Tooth fairy…" Baby Tooth remembered as the memories washed over her.
"Now Baby Tooth, do you remember me now?"
"Yes, the Evening Star, Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight, Wish I may. Wish I might. Grant me the wish I wish tonight" she recited looking up at the Evening Star.
"Yes, that very poem!" The Star praised as she claps her hands together.
"Now that I remember and understand what you ask of me. How specific should I be about my wish?"
"Baby Tooth, you said you wanted to do something for Jack. What do you want Jack to get out of your wish?"
"Jack is always by himself. A few children just started believing in him. He's part of the Guardians now too. But, sometimes when I see him. He's full of such great sorrow and pain. I only ever his eyes gleam and the sad melts away when he has someone to spend time with,"
"Like you," Star interjected. Baby Tooth's eyes widen at the commented. "You want to be Jack's companion and remain by his side then?"
"I-I, yes I do" Baby Tooth confessed
"I thought as much, but I wanted to be sure. Now, this wish comes with terms. Life altering terms Baby Tooth." Star cautioned.
"What are the terms?"
"For one, you will no longer be a Tooth Fairy. The Second, you will have a new Bond with Jackson Overland Frost that will be far unalike your Bond with Toothiana. The Third, this wish cannot be reversed. Once you've accepted the terms, I will grant it."
"Give up being a tooth fairy?"
"In exchange for a new life. A life you want," Baby Tooth opened her mouth and closed it. "I'll let you time to think about it. Remember this is only another chapter of your life, Svetlana" With a wave of her hand, Baby Tooth awoke back to the birdcage with her sleeping sisters beside her.
Baby Tooth laid in her bed just thinking. To give up by a tooth fairy for Jack? Could she? Would she? The Bond began to start up again, and with that Baby Tooth, was filled with the knowledge teeth. She knew the longitude and the latitude of each house where a child lost a tooth. The memories of the dream about the Evening Star became hazy, like, every other dream. Baby Tooth shook her head not wanting to waste time and zoomed out of her cot.
Baby Tooth flew to the Briefing Room, covered with looming windows filled the room with sunlight from every direction. Tooth was directing flocks of their daily assignments. Baby Tooth saw the warm smile on Toothiana's face.
"Good Morning Baby Tooth, you have Russia and Alaska again," she said.
Baby Tooth nodded and made her way to the frigid North. She decided it was best to start in Alaska. There were not as many children compared to Russia. Baby returned to her normal routine, collecting teeth and trading the teeth in for coins. Baby Tooth's grew accustomed to her role as a tooth fairy. For the last three centuries, she had the same routine. Baby Tooth never thought to question it; she felt she was completing a noble task to bring joy to children and persevering their innocence. After, Baby Tooth finished collecting all the teeth in Alaska and made her way to Russia.
In a Yaroslavl, Russia, Baby Tooth observed some of her sisters soaring passed her all sighing dreamily into their next house visit. Which only meant that Jack Frost was close. But, there was teeth to collect! Now, wasn't the time to try to find figure out where Jack was. Baby Tooth continued her route as Baby Tooth finished trading in a pretty incisor tooth for a shiny coin. Small Tooth zoomed to her with a slightly envious glare in her sister's eyes.
"Jack was wonder where you were,"
"Jack asked for me?" surprised that the Guardian would request for her presence.
"He's over by the Volkov Theater." Small Tooth said as she flew away.
Before flying off to Jack, Baby stole a glance at herself in the mirror. She looked like a small version of Toothiana. Vibrant green around her body, yellow feathers over her framing around her sharp tiny nose. Her purple skin with her two small moles on the left side of her face, and her rare purple and blue eyes. From the other fairy and Toothiana. Baby Tooth was different, or unique Jack has had a few times. She smoothed out any feathers she saw where out of place and flew to Jack not wanting to make him wait too long.
On top of the yellow theater house, Jack Frost was playful teasing her sisters. They were buzzing around him each wanting his attention to themselves. Once Baby Tooth appeared, as soon as Jack caught sight of her his focus was on her.
"Oh there she is," he mused as his eyes brighten. "Thank the Stars for your sisters. I would have been bored out of my mind here waiting for you. You're normally would have finished your work done by now" Jack teased
Baby Tooth chirped a reply and caused Jack to nod his head slowly. "I know you take your role serious Baby Tooth. You wound me, when will I ever have time to see my friend?"
The other fairies began tweeting as Baby Tooth only ignored their comments. There were still many teeth to collect. Maybe, Jack could help her collect teeth again. He's done it before when they were fighting Pitch. What a great idea, she thought. She chirped her answered and watched as Jack nodded and then smiled.
"Let's make a game out of it. Like the last time, sounds fair?" Jack questioned as Baby Tooth nodded.
It wasn't a fair match, Jack Frost verse a tooth fairy. They continued to collect all different types of teeth from the children. Finishing one town and onto the next. Jack seemingly two steps ahead for one second. Then Baby Tooth would have over forty teeth the next. It was playful and most importantly fun how they giggled and teased each other, racing the other to get to the house before the other. Once the night was over, Baby sees the change of Jack's face. He was building his frozen walls like he did every night.
"Well, that was fun. But, I'd bet you'll have to go back to Tooth's Palace."
Baby Tooth chirped as Jack nodded.
"Well…there is always tomorrow night right? Goodnight Baby Tooth" with that Jack vanished in the gust of wind leaving Baby Tooth to herself.
When Baby Tooth returned to the Tooth Palace, Toothiana was busy checking on the teeth archives. Making sure each tooth was where it belonged. Baby Tooth whooshed over to the Guardian who quickly noticed her daughter's odd behavior.
"Baby Tooth what's wrong?"
Out of all of her daughters, Baby Tooth was always the one who stood out the most. Baby Tooth for some abnormality was the only one of her fairies to have to different two eye colors and two moles. Of course, the mystery of these slight difference was always in the back of Tooth's mind. However, she worked hard if not a little harder than her other sisters. However, since Jack Frost has joined the Guardians Baby Tooth hasn't been the same. No, Baby Tooth had a massive crush on Jack Frost.
Baby Tooth gave Toothiana the most massive hug she could muster and took the Tooth Fairy by surprise. She returned the hug by place her hand over her daughter. Tooth took the fairy into her hands and looked down upon her with a smiled at the fairy. To Tooth's dismay, Baby Tooth was crying.
"Oh no, why are you crying?"
"I had a dream I met The Evening Star."
"The Evening Star" Tooth marveled.
The Evening Star was introvert compared to several other legends. She mostly reminded to herself in her Starship watching over the planet. But, every once in a while The Evening Star would come out of nowhere for reasons the Guardians themselves couldn't begin to understand.
Toothiana has only ever seen the Evening Star once in her lifetime. Once there was a child that instead of getting a quarter was given a 20 dollar bill. Tooth was angry at the time she didn't want to cause other children to expect 20 dollar bills for under their pillow. That would ruin the human economy. That same day the Evening Star visited her to explain the reasoning behind her wish. The Evening Star granted the wish so the little girl would be able to give a gift to her sickly brother. Tooth pledged never to question the Evening Star's decisions again. What did her daughter wish for that would warrant the Evening Star's attention?
"What did you wish for, Baby Tooth?"
The fairy tried to cover her face with her hands. The wish was about Jack Frost is seemed. Not, that Tooth was surprised. Tooth pushed Baby Tooth's attention off as nothing but a schoolgirl crush. If the Evening Star was involved, there was more than meets the eye.
"I wished I could be Jack's companion." the fairy confessed
"Oh…oh" Tooth repeated dumbly.
That was a shocker; Baby Tooth wanted to bond to Jack Frost? And The Evening Star agreed to grant that wish? Surely, that couldn't be the rest for Baby Tooth tears?
"Baby Tooth, are you sure there isn't more to this?"
"She said there are three terms." the fairy continued "The first, I won't be a tooth fairy anymore. The second I'll be bound to Jack forever, and the last one…she will not reverse the wish."
"But isn't that what you want?" Tooth asked
"I'm going to miss you and my sisters" Baby Tooth cried as Tooth nodded finally understanding.
"You don't lose us. We'll just have a different Bond now. Listen to me, Baby Tooth. No matter what happens, we're still family. You're my baby girl, and you're still a sister to the other girls. Sure, you won't be collecting teeth with us. But, you can always visit, and I'll even make a room yet for you."
"Really?" Baby Tooth sniffled
"I promise you," Tooth scooped up Baby Tooth and held her close to her heart. "Whatever you decided to do. I'll support you."
Just then a blinding light appeared in the Library of Memories. Both Tooth and Baby Tooth to tried to look at the source of the light only to be blinded by it. Once they opened their eyes sunglasses magically appeared on their faces. In front of them was The Evening Star and her angel, Opal.
"Hello Toothiana, Hello Baby Tooth. It's a pleasure to see you Toothiana. You look well."
"Thank you, Star. You're as radiant as ever."
"Yes, being a star does do that doesn't it" Star jested. The Guardian turned her attention to Baby Tooth.
"Baby Tooth, have you made your decision yet?" the Evening Star asked
"Hello Star, yes I have" Baby Tooth proclaimed proudly. The Guardian of Wishes' lips curled into a smile.
"Oh have you, so then do you agree with my terms?" the angel said as she looked at the flock of tooth fairies fluttered into the Library of Memories.
"Yes, I wish to be Jack Frost's companion and to remain by his side" Baby Tooth declared.
"Baby Tooth, I shall grant you the wish you wish tonight" the Evening Star waved her hand. A powerful light engulfed the Library blinding all the fairies. Once the light dimmed, the Evening Star, the angel, and Baby Tooth were gone.
