Months passed, and still Katey had managed to keep her HIV a secret. She wished she could confide in someone, but who? Collins was at MIT, Mark couldn't know and Maureen had the biggest mouth in history of Bohemia. Then there was Roger. But she couldn't tell Roger could she? She had to keep her game face on, he was barely getting through each day. His song wasn't coming along any better than it was a few months ago, and it seemed he had given up all together. But Katey wouldn't let that happen, not to her rock star. Not to Roger, who had so much to live for, if he just opened his eyes.
The two remaining Boho Boys (and girl) sat together on the couch. One of the only pieces of furniture left in the horrible place. Katey had offered to get money from her parents, whether they disowned her or not. She always had a knack of using her puppy dog eyes to get her way. The two men didn't doubt that she could get the money, but they wouldn't accept anything from people that didn't lift a finger to help their daughter after her attack. They were proud like that.
Katey had her feet on Mark's lap, her back leaning against Roger's thigh as he sat on the arm of the chair, lazily strumming random chords that didn't have any shape or form. Katey loved listening to Roger play. It changed him. Instead of having a lost, sad look on his face; which had become constant since April's death, he grew a dreamlike, almost peaceful expression. It transformed him. It made Katey's heart stutter every time.
"Katey?"
She jumped out of her Roger induced reverie and looked around at two pairs of worried eyes staring at her.
"Huh? I totally agree with Mark" she covered.
Roger chuckled, the movement jostling Katey slightly. She didn't mind, as long as he was actually laughing. He did so little of that anymore. She remembered back in the times when April was alive, when they would sit together for a while on the couch, just hanging out 'till Mark joined them. Any longer and they'd be clawing for each other's throats.
"No, Katey, we talking about the rent money"
Katey faked shock at being wrong, but felt actual shock leak through her façade. Rent? Benny said they'd never have to pay rent again, what the hell?
"Benny changed his mind, Kat, he wants the money, or we're out" Roger solemnly stated, looking down at his guitar. It was a little worse for wear, with missing strings and dents on the body. But it was apart of him. Roger without a guitar was like Mark without his camera…wrong on so many levels.
"That is bull…" Katey snapped, blue eyes flashing dangerously. Roger and Mark subtly moved away. You never, ever wanted to be close to her when she got like that.
"I know, but he's given us a deadline. Stop Maureen's protest performance, or…"
Mark couldn't finish his sentence. What would the Boho boys (and girl) do? Move? Where would they go? They left their homes and found their real home and family in each other. No-one else would accept them for who they are. They couldn't survive without each other.
"Mr Cohen. If I and/or Maureen get involved, nothing's going to happen. You know Benny's scared of me" Katey gloated, looking up at Roger from his lap. He smirked.
"Everyone's scared of you. You're a monster"
Katey just poked her tongue out and closed her eyes, lulling off to a light doze from the sound of Roger's guitar and humming. He had an amazing voice. It spoke of warmth and light that never shone in his face anymore. She missed the Roger she had found, but not the Roger on drugs. Never him. So deeply entranced, she barely heard Mark announcing he needed to go film. He was obsessed with that camera ever since she got it for him for his birthday all those years ago. Geek.
2 hours later, and still the pair sat on the couch. Katey's light blond head in Roger's lap, comfortable and silent. No words were needed. But Katey heard Roger sing, she stayed quiet, keeping her eyes tight shut. This wasn't a song for anyone else to hear.
One song Glory
One song, before I go
Glory
One song to leave behind
Katey's heart clammed up. Roger was going to die. She tried to make herself forget, but whenever she did it seemed to creep up on her. He was going to die, and he'd convinced himself he had nothing to live for. He never did ever notice her, though, did he?
A soft knock made Roger stiffen, bringing Katey out of her depressed thoughts. Mark had probably forgotten something and had returned for it. He was always forgetting things. Roger tapped Katey's shoulder gently, making her sit up, rubbing her blue eyes. Roger smiled fondly, before walking over to the door of the loft.
"What'd you forget?"
Roger froze, making Katey peer around his shoulder. It wasn't Mark. A beautiful, Spanish looking girl of around 19 stood there, smiling coyly. Her big brown eyes held Roger's enchanting green, making him stone. Katey had never seen anyone have that affect on Roger before. Not even April.
"Got a light?" the girl asked, her voice low and flirting.
Katey sensed her cue and subtly sprint to her room. Roger needed this, whether he thought so or not.
"I know you…you're shivering"
Katey grinned, flicking her fringe out of her eyes, squinting through the crack in the door. The girl was waltzing around the room, smirking and batting her eyelashes and Roger. It was quite ridiculous to be perfectly honest. But something made Katey's smile falter and her stomach tie up in knots. Roger was staring at the girl with awe, like a blind man that had never seen a sunset. His mouth set into a sweet smile as she spoke, hanging onto her every word. Katey sighed and turned away, rubbing her shivering arms. Roger needed a girl like that, to make him smile, maybe let him see that the world isn't as screwed up as he thought it was. Hold him close when the nights got rough, and was there for him throughout his illness. This Spanish beauty could be his angel.
A tinny beeping noise echoed through the tiny room. Katey's eyes widened and quickly she reached for her belt, turning it off. Hoping against hope Roger didn't hear it, she stuffed her AZT into her mouth, grimacing at the bitter taste.
Maybe Roger's life would be better, it deserved to be.
Right now, with Roger being wooed by some random girl, and Katey's HIV steadily getting worse, she didn't think that her life had any chance…
Was Roger actually laughing?
