Some of the lower ranked Arrancar hover about Orihime's room like flies to a corpse. They are all predators in Hueco Mundo – Orihime is the only exception in their vast, but bleak, realm. They know she is alone. They know she is vulnerable. They know that she is Aizen-sama's favorite. They also know that she is guarded.
It cannot be avoided though. They smell weakness, vulnerability in the air like sharks to blood in the water. Though she can sense them well enough, they know how to hide their reiatsu in Hueco Mundo quite well.
Sometimes, in the dark with a quarter of the moon showing, when she is supposed to be asleep, Orihime will jolt awake by an unspeakable force. A trickle down her spine. A chill in her chest. A tightness in her throat.
And in this dark place, the space seems to shrink. The white walls close in and Orihime will listen to the pounding of her heartbeat and the erratic breathing she can no longer control. Terror will creep in without subtlety, and Orihime will have a nightmare while being awake. Panic will set in. As this happens, the white of her eyes will show and her pores will begin to sweat out her unused adrenaline.
A beat or two will pass then - and a small pulse will follow. It is dark and flows like electricity through water. She will recognize the reiatsu, and she may breathe again.
At times, she will simply be too terrified to entertain silly fancies and will try to sleep past the tremors that plague her. Other times, when the presence is enough to calm her nerves, she will make up elaborate stories. They usually feature a pirate ship made out of candy glued together with red bean paste, or a tower made of glass and seaweed and anything from rainbow-colored unicorns to male celebrity guest appearances on random game shows run by a stork.
Orihime will think of many strange things in the aftermath of what could or might have happened, but none will be so strange as the thought of a dragon guarding a girl who isn't a princess.
