Chapter 2:
Skye Belleview stood in front of her closet, staring with distaste at the clothes inside. Running her fingers lightly over the different fabrics, she shook her head at each option. Music played softly in the background from her computer. Her blonde hair lay delicately on her shoulders. Shaking her head, she shut the closet door with a deep breathe and moved to her drawers.
She was already two minutes late to leave, there was no point in trying today. Grabbing a blue sweatshirt and a pair of jeans, she quickly got dressed and pulled on a pair of sneakers. Racing out the door, she called a goodbye to her mother, and put her headphones in. It was a short walk to the school, but long enough for her to get a few songs in. Plus, she could escape from the paranoia of being followed, as well.
Skye had the feeling she was being watched ever since her and her family moved to California ten years ago. She could see the deep blue eyes in her dreams, but it was a nightmare she could never wake up from. They followed her while she ate, while she worked, while she slept. They were always there, and always watching.
Shaking her head at the thought, Skye moved onto the street, drowning out all noise with her music. But she could not shake the feeling today. Her skin prickled at the feeling of eyes on her back. Her heart began to race. Her pace quickened, hoping to find civilization before the eyes could reach her.
She could sense the figure getting closer and closer and closer. Practically running at this point, tears fled to her eyes. She could feel her heart pounding in every part of her body. Hands shaking, she gripped at her phone, ready to call for help at any moment.
That's when she heard over her music a familiar voice scream, "Skye!" Turning, Skye saw the stupid smirk of Blake Andrews, her stunningly attractive, yet incredibly obnoxious neighbor.
Angrily, she pulled her headphones out of her ears. "You scared the crap of me Blake!" Skye smacked him as he laughed, but it was no use. Being the star on the football, baseball, and wrestling team, she wouldn't be able to hurt him.
Still, Blake was better than whoever was watching her. Just barely.
"Good morning to you too, beautiful." Blake sarcastically remarked. The two continued walking as Skye tried to get her heartbeat to return to a normal level. "What did you think was going to happen, someone was just gonna snatch you up on the street?"
"Could happen, you know."
"Well, you're safe from any predators. I'm here."
"My hero." Skye dragged out the words, rolling her eyes at him. Blake let out a laugh.
"Oh, I almost forgot. Jen's party is tonight, right? Do you have everything?" Blake questioned her.
"Yeah, I think so." It wasn't easy, seeing that Jen believed she was a princess that deserved to be treated as a queen, but Skye had managed to fill every one of her requests for her birthday, including a large pink cake and a great birthday present.
"Food?"
"Check."
"Music?"
"Check."
"Decorations?"
"Blake-"
"Entertainment?"
"This is the small party, remember? Just us. And I have everything. And I have everything for this weekend, too."
"Just making sure that little miss perfect didn't mess anything up."
"Oh, please, at least I offered to do any of it. God forbid you offer to help."
"Hey! I'm great at planning things! I just know what a control freak you are and if anything wasn't to your liking, you would take over anyway!"
"That's because I like things that are good."
"Wow, you wound me." Blake put her a heart to his chest, faking hurt.
"Shut up."
"Oh, good one."
Finally, a tall boy appeared to break the two up. Danny Saldan grabbed Skye by the waist, picking her up and taking her away from Blake. His warm brown eyes glared at the pair.
"It's only 7 in the morning, and you're already trying to kill each other? It's going to be a long day."
"His fault." Skye said, just as Blake said, "Her fault."
"Both of you go to class. And I swear, if you start fighting again, I'm going to give you both a time out." Danny shook a disapproving finger between the two of them.
"Yes dad." Skye and Blake groaned in unison and began walking into the school building. But not before shoving each other.
Skye glided through the hallways, moving towards her locker. Standing in front of it, she tried a combination, wincing at the fact that it wouldn't open. The bell was going to ring any second, she could tell from the lack of people in the halls. Struggling further, she pulled harder and harder but it wouldn't budge.
"Hey. You." Skye heard a cold voice from behind her. A cold, annoyed, male voice. That was a first. She turned to the source.
"Yes?"
The first thing she noticed was how pale he was. Their was a distinct contrast between his skin and his dark, curly brown hair. And he was beautiful. His sculptured face was turned down towards her. He almost seemed like a creature from another world. He didn't seem real.
Skye met his eyes and gasped. They were black. Not dark brown, black. A chill ran through her shoulders and down her spine.
"I have something for you." He pulled out a long box from behind his back. It was blue, but not any blue. It was an energetic blue, an electric blue, a blue that she had only seen one in one other place. It was beautiful and frightening at the same time. Skye wanted to touch it and run away from it at the same time.
"What is it?" She asked quietly, her green eyes locked on the cover.
"Dangerous, isn't it?" The boy's malicious voice continued. He looked down at it and grinned with bright white, sharp teeth. "Gorgeous, too. And it's all yours."
Skye finally broke her staring contest with the box and raised both her eyebrows, bewildered.
"Don't give me a look. If you want it, it's all yours. But make a decision quickly, I have to leave." He checked the watch on his pale wrist.
Skye bit her lip, debating whether her desire for the box outweighed her conscience telling her not to take it. "I guess so. But what..." Skye's question was caught off by the beeping of the boy's watch and his cell phone ringing.
"Do you want it or not? Going once, twice..." He started, looking still at his watch.
"I'll take it." Skye said, quickly. The boy smiled mockingly.
"All yours." He winked at her, placing the box in her small hands. She could feel the pulse of the box, as if it was alive.
"See you later." His mocking voice rang through her body. She nodded, never taking her eyes away from the box in her hands.
The beeping in the boys watch finally stopped. He answered his cell phone, beginning to walk away. "Relax. It's done." He snapped the phone shut and exited the hallway without looking back at Skye.
