Chapter 2
Reservations
Alex helped Bobby unpack the boxes he brought in. By 5 PM they had completed the task, and the boxes were discarded. Following a simple dinner, she picked up the papers, and studied the information concerning the bed and breakfast. Sitting at desk, she picked up the phone and dialed the number. After a few rings, the phone was picked up.
A pleasant voice came over the line. "MAK B&B, Jean speaking, how may I help you?"
Alex leaned forward studying the brochure. "Yes, I'm calling about reservations."
She could hear a smile in the voice. "When were you wanting to schedule?"
Alex decided that Jean was close to her own age. "We were thinking late October."
"Well, October is one of our busiest months. Let's see what we have."
Alex could hear pages being turned, she held her breath waiting. Jean's cheery voice broke the silence. "We do have an opening the last weekend in October. How many in your party?"
Alex sighed with relief. "Just two."
Jean gathered the dates, time of arrival, and if they would need a shuttle from the airport. Alex wrote down the local number Jean had given her, in case there were problems.
Jean wrote down the information in her appointment book. She thought the woman, Alex, sounded nice. She smiled. "You've seen our photos on the web? Good. Is there a particular room you would prefer? Yes, all rooms have king size beds." She jotted down the information. She smiled. "The one with the French doors is our most requested room. Do you or your husband have any allergies we need to be aware of? Good. Alright then, we look forward to seeing you then."
Alex hesitated. "Your brochure suggested that the house is haunted?"
Jean laughed. "Well, it is an old home. It has been in the family for years. I can't say you'll see a ghost, but, who knows what this old house holds?"
A chill ran down Alex's spine. Those were the exact words I said to Bobby. She was about to ask something more specific about the family, and decided against it. She thanked Jean, and hung up the phone.
Jean hung up the phone, sighing She had hoped for one weekend without guests, but the season was winding down, and soon they could fall into the winter routine. A woman carrying a basket of flowers walked by Jean as she hung up the phone.
The older woman stopped and cocked her head. "Problems?"
Jean shook her head looking up at her sister. "No, we have a new reservation for the end of October."
She chuckled. "She is hoping for ghosts."
The older woman laughed. "Well, that is Halloween weekend. Maybe grandma will oblige her."
Jean laughed. "She does have a way of doing that!"
A woman walked by them with some tools. Jean frowned. "Car problems?"
The woman grunted. "The fan belt broke on the car. Friggin antique. Why, or how did I let you two talk me into buying that thing, is beyond me."
The older woman wrapped her free arm around her. "Because we looove you, Anne, and wanted you to feel a part of the operations. Admit it, you've got talent with the vehicles."
Anne pulled away from her, scoffing. "And your contribution?"
Mary sighed. "Cleaning, prepping the rooms, laundry, you know, the things you hate."
Anne laughed. "Oh yeah, I guess we'll keep you."
Mary stuck her lip out as if dejected. "I guess if that's all I'm good for."
Jean rolled her eyes, looking up from the menu she had begun creating. "Come on guys, we need to prep the house for the guests we're getting this week."
With that, the three women dispersed, setting about their tasks.
Alex sat at the desk, staring at the phone. Bobby looked at her. "Anything wrong?"
She shook her head. "I just made our reservation at the MAK B&B." She looked up at him, perplexed. "She used the exact same words I said to you, about it being an old house."
Bobby laughed. "Alex, you're reading way too much into the conversation. It's just, just a coincidence."
Alex watched him walk down the hall. As much as she wanted to believe that, she had a strange feeling about their upcoming honeymoon weekend.
