An Excerpt:

The shoulder of the road passed by with ease, the white line never ending as Bella's eyes followed it curiously. One earbud in, the other out, she sat as a passenger next to her mother, whistling a nameless tune that fought against Bella's music. In defiance, Bella closed the gap and pushed the other earbud in, pulling her eyes away from the berm. Easing her head back, she shut her eyes; but despite her increasing music, she could make out her mother's voice behind the gentle guitar rhythm. She opened her eyes, pulling one earbud out and glancing up at the green light her mother drove closer to. Quickly, Bella made out the final lines of her mother's short speech, the mention of baking cookies when they got home because she "just felt like it."

Bella held back a laugh, her ever-increasing sporadic mother never ceasing to amaze her. She turned her head as they passed under the green light, and a vision of red appeared in front of her eyes. As her mother was turned to look at her, Bella's hands instantly came up, and she let out a choked scream as the bright red truck collided with her mother's car door. Immediately, the red became crimson as the car moved sideways and the white left her mother's eyes. Unable to control her body, Bella slammed her head against the door frame, knocking her unconscious. The last thing she saw before her eyes shut was the splatter of blood on the windshield as her mother fell forward onto the steering wheel.
