Connie and Cal walked into cubicles hand in hand to find Charlie as he said he would do the appropriate tests to find out if Connie was pregnant. They found him and they got to work on the tests that needed to be done. It was just a waiting game for the results to come back and whilst they were waiting for Connie's results, she cleaned up Cal's face and had to put a total of 3 stitches on the wounds. Cal kissed Connie in thanks just as they finished Charlie walked in with the orange envelope in his hand. This was the envelope that may change both of their lives forever.
"So the results are here"
"I guess this may change my life the moment I look at it"
"Babe it will change our life, not just yours"
"Yeah but I will be the one carrying it around for 9 months."
"Any way do you want the results or not" Charlie said in a mocking tone.
"YES!" they said in sink.
Charlie handed Connie the orange envelope and stood slightly back. Cal sat behind her but to the side so that he could still see what the outcome may be. Connie started to undo the envelope she pulled out a crisp piece of paper with small black font on it. She red from left to right till she found the answer she has been looking for. She and Cal both looked at each other and hugged each other. When Connie broke away with tears in her eyes. She placed her hands on her abdomen where her unborn child lay. All she could see in her mind was that piece of paper saying PREGNANT. This was the first day of the rest of her life where she was no longer a single parent and where she no longer only had one child.
Her thoughts suddenly turned to her daughter, the one who was at a boarding school away from her mother, oblivious to what was going on with her mother and her new boyfriend or partner as Connie would like to call him. Her initial thought was to call her and tell her the news but she knew she would only text everybody in her contact lists, which did include many people from the hospital that they didn't want to find out. So she decided she would tell her face-to-face at the weekend when she was going to drive to her school and bring her home and let her meet Cal and maybe find her a main stream school close to home so she would have a bond with her new brother or sister.
Connie didn't want Grace to grow up how she did in a boarding school with no proper functioning relationship with her family members. As soon as Connie was old enough to go to school she got sent to a boarding school about 3 hours away from where the rest of her family lived. With Connie being the oldest it was clear that he mother and father didn't care about what Connie did with her life and how she grew up. Most holidays were spent at other family members house or stuck at the boarding school with international students who couldn't actually get home. Connie never had the relationship she wanted with her mother; she was never able to go to her when she had a problem or when she reached some challenging stages of her development into a woman. However she wanted Grace to be able to come to her and be open and honest with her when she was at that stage in her life.
On the other hand Cal had a very different upbringing from Connie. He was always the older sibling who had to try and compete with his younger brother for the attention from is parents which was never successful. Cal was what his parents called a disappointment, even though Ethan and Cal were both doctors he would still not live up to his parent's expectations. Cal didn't want his child to grow up lie that thinking they are not worth as much as their siblings.
They all left the cubicle and split up into the ED. Cal went through to reception, Charlie stood at the nurse's station and Connie went to her office.
