I've had way too much homework, I still have to finish writing an essay for English on Pride and Prejudice. & my allergies are starting to act up, so my eyes are really bothering me & it's taking all of my self control not to constantly rub at them. So yeah, happy first day of spring!
Chapter Two
The hotel was beautiful.
May had never stayed in one so nice before. All of the hotels she'd stayed at before had been small, a bit dirty, and without as many lights.
Merlin entered without looking around twice and headed straight towards the front desk.
May followed him, her eyes taking in everything.
There was still people around, all dressed extravagantly and talking in loud, laughing voices. May could hear music coming from somewhere inside of the hotel.
"One room please," Merlin said to the woman behind the desk.
"Mr. Scoggins!" the woman's whole face brightened as she gazed at him. "I thought you already had a room, sir."
"This one's not for me," Merlin replied and glanced over at May.
The woman's face darkened as she looked at May.
May blushed and her attention turned to the floor.
"Well, I'm sure you want her to have a room near your own," the woman said.
Merlin looked at May, his eyes asking her for her answer.
May refused to look up from the ground.
"Yes, that would be nice," Merlin told her.
The woman nodded.
May turned away from them and looked around, her eyes following the well dressed people who were leaving.
There must be a party going on here, May thought.
A woman about her age strode through the lobby, her arm linked with a handsome young man's.
May caught her eye.
The woman looked her up and down and turned to whisper in her partner's ear before they laughed.
May felt herself turn red and she clenched the sides of her skirt.
May usually never let anyone know how she was feeling, but when she had exploded with emotion her parents had scolded her for caring too much about things that "didn't matter."
But May hated to be made fun of, she'd been teased enough in school for being that odd quiet girl who always sat alone in the corner. Who would audition for school performances only to back out at the last minute.
Merlin appeared next to her with a room key in his hand.
May barely noticed, her knuckles beginning to turn white.
"May?" Merlin asked.
May glanced over at him.
"Are you alright?" Merlin asked.
May's grip on her skirt loosened and she nodded.
Merlin frowned but nodded back and began to lead her towards her room.
May was more tired than she would admit. Her bus had broken down early that morning and she and all of the other passengers had been forced off of it. She'd been too drowsy from lack of sleep to think of grabbing any if her things, only her guitar which she'd kept next to her the whole ride since she'd left Maine.
"Here's your room, ma'am," Merlin said.
May stared at the door.
Merlin opened it for her before handing her the key.
"Thanks," May answered.
"You didn't bring anything?" Merlin suddenly noticed.
May shook her head. "It's all still on my bus," she replied.
"Well, we can go buy you something else to wear tomorrow morning," Merlin told her.
May shook her head. "It's already enough that you're paying for my room," she answered. "That's as much as you're going to do for me, Mr. Scoggins."
"If you insist, Mrs. Clutterbucket," Merlin said.
"I'm not married," May immediately objected.
"Oh," Merlin looked surprised, "I'm sorry, I just supposed a pretty thing like yourself would already be married."
May blushed a bright red and quickly stepped into her room after fumbling for the light switch. "Well, you supposed wrong," she answered.
"Well, my room is right next door if you need me," Merlin told her.
May felt herself blush redder and was glad her back was turned to him. "I think I'll be fine," she answered, managing to keep her voice level.
Merlin continued to stand a bit awkwardly in her doorway.
May turned to look at him. "Good night, Mr. Scoggins," she told him.
Merlin smiled and tipped his hat to her. "Good night, ma'am," he replied and turned towards his own room.
May gently closed the door after him. She leaned her back against the door and took a couple of calming breaths.
Merlin Scoggins, famous country singer, called me pretty, she thought. Nancy really will never believe me.
May stood up straight and looked around her room.
It was small, enough room for a queen sized bed and a dresser. The door to the bathroom was in the corner.
May headed towards the bathroom and closed the door after her, despite the fact that she was in the room alone. She reached the mirror examined her tired face in the mirror and sighed. May turned the faucet on and splashed her face.
Music drifted into her room.
May looked up.
Maybe I could go see the party that's going on, she thought.
May exited the bathroom, heading towards the door.
Wait, May stopped. What if Merlin comes looking for me and I'm not here?
May glanced down at herself.
And all those people were so nicely dressed.
Finally May shrugged, decided that she would in fact go see the party even if it was only for a couple of minutes.
May slid her room key into her skirt pocket and opened the door to carefully creep out of her room.
You don't have to creep, its not like he's going to hear you, May suddenly realized and began to walk normally down the hall towards the music.
It took all of May's self power not to waltz down the hall, in time to the music.
I was gonna make this chapter longer but my eyes are kinda begging me to go rest them for awhile. Anyways, once I get back into the swing of things I will update at least once a week. I'm not sure what day of the week that'll be but I'm sure I'll figure it out.
