It wasn't the word Alby wanted to hear but the way the creature thrashed trying to pull the spear from its chest was more than enough evidence that he didn't have time to get more information out of the guardsmen.

"We have to move!" Newt ordered grabbing the older boy by his tunic and shoving him into the other guardsmen.

"What about you?" Alby asked clearly not trusting the boy alone.

Grabbing the book from Ben's hand Newt pulled his spear out of the creatures back. "Uthra! ZE'CU NENEIFTY JA'CLUR! Alba pal da'zclur." The words foreign to their own ears seemed to enrage the monster, and with impressive speed it was on Newt who had spear ready to dodge the deadly attack. "RUN!" Newt pleaded. But Alby couldn't run, not and leave the blonde this way. He was young and stupid and much like Ben trying to gain valor, but valor was not gifted to the dead.

"Minho, Get these men to the gates. Me and this Whelp will distract him then when we have a chance, we'll be there." Alby unsheathed his sword and ran over to the creature driving his sword into his spin. The creature wailed and thrashed violently trying to dislodge the sword, Alby sought this opportunity to grab Newt and run. Well that had been his plan but he was shocked to find that Newt was no longer in front of him but had the book and was spouting off some gibberish.

"What the shuck are you doing? That thing is going to kill us!" Alby yelled furiously trying to pull the boy off the Chapel steps.

"Captain, you have to go, I'm the only one who can keep Uthra bond!"

"You're talking crazy, there's no words in that shuckin book!" Alby stood looking down at the blank red pages of the strange book, wondering if he should knock the boy out for the sake of his sanity when suddenly symbols began to appear and glow on the pages.

"The words of the ancient Paladin masters, this book is known as Ha'Curria or spirt code, they used it to keep the Damned at bay when the Markers still believed the souls of the fallen could be saved, later they found out otherwise." Newts eyes never left the pages and it seemed like "Uthra" as the blonde had called the beast had disappeared completely.

"That's amazing, how do you know all of this?" Alby asked in mild fascination.

"When I was young, my pastor told me stories of the sins of Holistade. But I will tell you the tale when we have more time now we mu-." A loud creaking caught their attention as the doors to the chapel opened.

"Who goes there?" A withered voice asked. Suddenly the figure of an old man appeared, he was dressed in black robes with long white hair that fell in mats around his face. "Doesn't bode well staying outside the Chapel at night, get you things and come inside."

"I'll round up the others and we'll stay in the chapel until we can move safely out of this place. Or would you advise against it?" Most would mistake Alby's words for sarcasm but Newt knew that the man had suddenly begun to trust him in the knowledge he held of this once great city. After assurance from Newt that they would be safe in the Chapel, Alby finally found Minho and his other men fighting off legions of distorted bodies every man trying to hold his own, only to be out matched by spirits that could not be harmed.

"Minho fall back to the Chapel we'll be safe inside, none can enter in the holy place." Alby yelled pulling a guardsman by the name of Zart by his legs out of the danger.

It was going to be a long night.

Newt walked in the Chapel hall cautiously, people filled the halls and rooms each looking as though this was an event that took place every night; music and dancing along with the sweet smell of meat roasting over a fire. A young blond woman walked over to him with a challis of wine. "You look tired soldier, let me assist you." She coed seductively running her cold hand under his tunic to feel the soft warm flesh that lay beneath raising on the tip of her toes she drug her tongue slowly up Newts neck to his earlobe, which caused an involuntary shiver to travel down his spin.

"Please stop." He pleaded. The woman backed away from him swaying her hips from side to side with the music before raising her dress to her thighs and moving back in. Taking his hand in hers she ran his hand over her thigh and the higher.

"Mendlay have some respect you're in a church." A female voice spat. Newts head was spinning and his pants had become uncomfortably tight. Clearing his throat he glanced back at the girl who was now dancing against a wall occasionally she would look back at him.

"Please tell me you are not going to fall for her tricks, if so you were right to leave our order." It was a voice he had heard before; it had pleaded for him not to leave when his mother had died; eyes so green that put shame to all others lips like baby's breath, She was there and alive the only woman who made his heart sting when she said his name, the only woman to ever kiss him in a way that made his head spin. The only woman he would ever love.

"Brynilide?"

Valkan sat atop the steps of the chapel finally able to break away from the overly crowded chapel hall. Uthra had been successfully bond back to his grave for the night so there was little to nothing for him to do other than watch the damned try to reach the chapel as they did most nights. It became comical after a few years, watching their red eyes gleam as they passed the blessed gates they could never enter.

"Come on you scaly bastards, I don't have all night. But wait YES I DO!" He yelled cackling loudly. Brynilide usually joined him every night for this activity but tonight she was more worried about how she was going to get all their people out of there safely. It had been Pastor Alca who had suggested waiting until morning had blessed them with its light; the damned couldn't step in the light without risking exposing themselves to the archangels that had long since made their home in the distant forest.

It had been rumored by the older paladins that they had long since watched the Paladins of Holistade to see if they were worthy of joining a higher order and when the Great Reaping as it soon became called happened, they would swoop down and shred the souls of the damned. Pretty nasty stuff Valkan would say it made him glad that he himself was a Paladin.

"Alby I found another entrance." He heard a voice say. It wasn't the damned, the damned spoke Holisian this was more of a Lazarus dialect. It was then that he caught sight of a group of men trying to defend themselves from the legion of the damned.

"Well my work is never done." Valkan chimed as he pulled out his crossbow and sent two arrows threw the air hitting the damned and sending gold light from each arrow blinding the others around it.

"Come on I have things I have to do people!" Valkan yelled a dark headed man looked up at him in shock, only then did he remember that him was indeed wearing him full armor and probably resembled one of the man paladin statues that adorned the courtyard. With a wicked smile he stood as straight as he could watching the men rush through the gate pulling injured men in behind him.

"Please close the gate gentlemen." The dark haired boy looked around again to each statue in the courtyard. It took all Valkan's power not to laugh at the boy as his eyes scanned the courtyard for the voice.

"Thomas get the chapel door!" yelled an Asian boy trying to pull a fair haired boy up the steps; the boy "Thomas" ran right passed Valkan who never moved to grab the door, looking inside no doubt trying to find the source of the voice.

"Welcome to the Holistade Chapel please enjoy your stay we apologize for the legion of the mildly deranged Citizens pleased come again!" Thomas looked at the statue beside him, dark eyes scanning it with a mix of fear and curiosity.

"Thomas the door!" The Asian boy yelled at the dark haired one. "Hurry up gentlemen we are running out of daylight."

"Hello Newt, it's been a long time, how have you been?" She smiled brightly no sign of the relationship they had shared before anywhere on her features, which made something inside Newt ache. He had thought about her every moment for the first two years he had been gone, it wasn't until he met a tawny skinned Lazrian that he had forgotten about her pale face and plump cherry colored lips.

"Good how have you been?" She rolled her eyes at him and smiled her teeth shimmering in the fire light. It reminded of the night he had left, her long black hair falling down her shoulders it was the first time he had seen her with her hair down. She had perfected the art of sneaking past the guards and into Newts quarters, usually to practice late night studies in language. She had always been the master at the foreign tongue, but tonight her reasons were different.

A window slamming caught his attention as he packed some light provisions for his journey; he was going to leave silently in the night so not to encourage others to leave. She wore a blue night gown that was guided in silver; her seventeen year old body had filled out well with all the right curves and bumps. She drove half the other boys wild and the other half feared her.

"Please stay." She pleaded eyes shining in the fire light. It had almost made him change his mind completely seeing her, but he had already asked Master Alca to arrange a carriage for him at the corner road far away from town.

"Why did you come, I have to say you are the last person I was expecting after what you did today, telling the other paladins I was weak and it would be better if I were to go, now the irony. You standing in my quarters begging me to stay, no Brynilide find another puppet I have nothing left here." Newt snapped he had done nothing but follow her even though he was the elder of the two, he stayed by her side threw everything and she had all but throw him in the gutter in a blink of the eye.

"Please I was an ass; I'm sorry please just stay." Tear streamed down her cheeks but Newt was too furious to even notice. He wrapped his hand around the paladin spearmen emblem he had around his neck and threw it at her, hitting her in the throat and falling to the ground.

"You can keep that, I have no use for it. Besides I might get someone killed." And that was the last time he saw her. Looking at her now she seemed different, her heart shaped face now seemed more sharp and her emerald eyes never focused on one thing like she was always watching for something to attack. She appeared tired and her once provocative Paladin armor was now switched to a hunter green tunic with brown trousers and knee high boots, a belt with two tomahawks was wrapped around her narrow waist and another around her stomach that held a dagger. She looked ready for battle.

"Help someone! this man is hurt." Frypan's voice over powered the music and mirth and soon everyone was helping him get the rest of the Lazrian men through the double doors. Bryn was on her knees beside Alby covering a wound on his chest.

"Brought guest I see, Hold on now friend these men will patch you up they are train in the art of healing." She smiled kindly before glaring up at Newt.

"So, it was you who stole the Ha'Curria?" Her eyes darkened but a sudden commotion by the door changed everything.

"Master Paladin The damned made it in the gates; they are heading for the Chapel." Suddenly the screams and wails broke out across the Chapel.

"Silence, where is Valkan?!" Brynilide froze for a moment before turning to the door. "Where is Valkan?" she demanded. Light began to fill the Chapel hall and a dark figure walked through the Chapel door humming a marry tune, and then bolting the door behind him.

"We should probably head for the other side of the chapel, they aren't there yet, come on Bryn we have work to-….Newt?" Valkan's eyes flashed dangerously when he saw the fair haired boy by his sister, his hand moved to his axe in his belt as he approached the other boy slowly. Newt felt a cold chill run up his spin, Valkan was many things and crazy was on the top of that list. Suddenly a smile broke across the dark haired boys face and his arms spread wide.

"It has quite literally been years since I have seen you, and you still look as good as you did the day you turned Bryn into a nun. Or a black widow it's hard to tell she's still young." Valkan hugged Newt tightly almost squeezing the life out of the poor boy before letting him go and facing his livid younger sibling.

"I thought you had died Valkan, what would I had done thing Pray that God blessed you with mercy sine you let Newt walk out of the chapel with the Ha'Curria and damned us all!" She yelled bitterly making the other Holisian's stare. Valkan's eyes turned dangerous, but his smile never wavered.

"You don't even know what the Ha'Curria is how would you know he walk out with it, he merely walked out with its vessel Master Alca has the real Ha'Curria with him, and this day was coming everyone know it. Since the sins of our people plagued the lands we were given a choice leave, or die. It's time to choose sister."
