We ran further into the damp, musty ground.
The city wasn't exactly concerned about our part of the town, so they happily let everything fall to shit. But it was also a blessing in disguise. It meant that we could do whatever we wanted, as long as nothing came crashing down. Over the years, we had dug tunnels for extra rooms. One of my favorite pastimes was just wandering around and getting lost.
One of our tunnels was turned into an excellent gun range. We made it our own, like everything else here.
I stopped at the entrance and listened. Pure silence. Pure bliss. Bex and I walked in. some extra guns were lying around on a table. I cocked my handgun and walked to a target. Bex was still at the table. I shot and hit the bullseye. And then I started laughing.
"Cammie you're a fucking asshole!" Bex shouted once the echoing died down. No matter how many gunshots you've been around, the surprise ones can sneak up on you. And every time, they sneak up on Bex. Every time her reaction is great.
We took turns firing. All of a sudden I heard a door creak open. I grabbed Bex and took cover. There was nothing wrong with us being in here, but now was a time to get information.
People stormed in and grabbed the guns on the table. Bex and I stared at each other with wide eyes. There was a raid tonight. No one had said anything to us. I shook my head at her. We weren't supposed to go with them. So, of course, we had to find out why.
Once the footsteps were gone, we bolted. Macey was roaming one of the tunnels. We grabbed her and found one of our hiding spots throughout the city.
"Did you hear anything about tonight?" we sat cramped in a corner of the Bronx. Macey shook her head.
"Ok. we haven't either. So how do we follow them tonight?"
"Cam, maybe there's a reason why we weren't told anything. Maybe we shouldn't be there tonight."
"Macey, are you really backing down from a fucking mission? Of all people, you should be encouraging this!" Bex started talking before me. We both believed in tough love. And neither of us could bear to lose Macey. So Bex told her what was on her mind. And she made good points.
"Macey you know she's right." I tried to make it sound gentle. If Macey got too overworked or stressed, she would shut down and otherwise become useless. She sat there defeated, going over things in her head. In her old life, she was a rich heiress. If she made a mistake, daddy's money would fix it. If she got in trouble now, there would be no future to worry about. She's not there anymore and she knew it. So she put on her brave face and walked out of the damp corner.
"Well I can't investigate on my own." she kept walking away so I grabbed Bex and we caught up to her with smiles on our faces.
Headquarters were quiet. It seemed like a normal day. I stood there for a second longer. Someone would have passed through to go get to another room. We remained the only people there. So it wasn't a regular day. It was a raid and information was being withheld from us.
We went into the storage room. It was significantly empty. People were gone and we had to find them. Macey sprinted to the ground level. The sun was beginning to set. Something would start soon. Bex caught up to take lead and we looked for a car to hotwire. Over the years and many days with nothing to do, we had acquired quite an impressive collection of cars. None of which came with keys. That's for amateurs. Or pickpockets. We weren't patient enough for the latter. It's a skill that I had mastered by the time I was ten.
Instead of driving aimlessly through the city to find them, we grabbed all of the mics we have planted and listened to the evidence. There was virtually nothing. We racked our brains for any mentions of a raid within a week. Bex had heard something about them going to the docks for a shipment. Shipments were a valued thing. If there were guns, weed, or anything that sells on the black market, we would be there to sell it tomorrow.
Even though it was hardly any information, it was better than nothing. I shoved Bex to the passenger seat. She was good at a lot of things, but I was not dying because of Bex driving on the wrong side of the road. How shitty would that be, considering the business I'm in?
The nighttime traffic covered the city. I took as many backroads as I could find, but it still took us an infuriating amount of time.
No helicopters rumbled in the sky. That really only happens in movies. But cars were in the hiding spots we knew to check. They would know what our car looked like so we went back a couple of blocks and parked. Everything was steady. Men were unloading cargo boxes. That's where they were gonna strike. I knew where someone would be waiting with a gun. Bex went to find them. I watched as she did her thing, disappearing into thin air.
Men flooded in from their hiding spots. I don't know why we weren't let into the loop. We did this all the time. But when they started to yell and shout, I knew something wasn't right. I didn't say anything to Macey as we got closer and sunk deeper into the shadows.
My breath caught in my throat. I knew why we weren't supposed to be here.
This one's gonna be a sweet and short chapter. If you haven't noticed, this story isn't really my main focus right now. I haven't been putting very much into it. But I'm happy to write it. Tell me whatever you want in the review section :)
