The trio approached two rickety wooden structures, about two stories each, connected by an equally rickety-looking bridge before Constance put one finger up.

"Wait," Constance said, taking up one of the items, which was immediately encompassed by a glow of cyan, "I can see if anyone's in there."

"No need, pard'ner," a southern accent rang out as a figure jumped out of one of the windows, and shot out a lasso which wrapped around Constance, who dropped the object in his hand, "We'll show ourselves."

"What is this shit made of?" Constance spat as he struggled against the ropes.

"Steel, pard'ner. Fighting against it might cause some burns, so I'd advise against that." the southerner said as he cast his arm which the wire was attached to, to the floor, slamming Constance into the dirt.

John, seeing one of his teammates in trouble, jumped onto the wall of one of the buildings and mentally steeled himself. He then kicked off the wall, aiming himself towards the enemy, fist reared back.

"Prepare yourself, 'pard'ner'" John taunted, preparing to throw a downercut.

"Get down, Andrew." A calm, feminine voice said, before the now named Andrew complied, "Got you." the same voice promised as the owner placed her palms in such a way that a line between the two surfaces occupied the space that John's fist was about to.

"What the-" the line that her palms made became a barrier, upon which John's hand slid before it bounced back and struck him in the gut.

"Can I grab it?" Beatrix pointed at the transparent green barrier, gaining control of it.

"Just you an' me now, big'un." Andrew said as he cut off the rope and raised his leg in the air to kick Constance.

Constance hopped to his feet, and the rope was covered in a faint cyan glow as it unwound, the tight feeling of his arms being pressed to his sides fading, "Yeah it is," he then ran towards his enemy, who pointed his arm toward him, "Sucks for you!"

"Sucks for me?" Andrew shot out another steel rope with a knot at the end and fired it into Constance's gut, "You might have that backward."

Constance smirked, giving pause to Andrew as he grabbed the knot and started spinning, "Nah, you see, while I was unbinding myself, I hollowed out those ropes and made myself some armor."

With no warning, Constance slammed his elbow behind his back, pulling his opponent towards the ground, before the final member of the opposing team spoke, "Not so fast."

Constance suddenly found his own and Andrew's positions switched.

Beatrix was getting worried, the fight wasn't going well, her opponent was too tricky, and she constantly dispelled and remade her barriers to avoid Beatrix grabbing hold of it.

"I tire of this." the girl said, putting her hands at her side, "It's clear we're at a stalemate. My other teammates are sure to be wrapping up their fight as we speak. If you are to leave now, you can keep your flags."

John looked at her waistband, Five - no, six, flags. If the other members of her team have this many, we can't pass it up. Especially when we have only, he looked at his, and then Beatrix's waists, ZERO? When did that happen? And why is there a leaf there?

"So you've noticed, eh?" she cast another barrier across her midsection.

Constance suffered yet another blow to his gut as the combination of Andrew and the unknown assailant teamed up on him.

"What happened to showing yourselves, eh?" Constance prodded, not liking having a foe who was essentially invisible being (in his opinion) the main reason he was losing.

"Fine, I shall show myself." the same regal voice shot out before a figure appeared in front of him where a piece of metal had been, "It won't matter. You're going to lose anyway."

Think, size her up. Constance blocked a punch from the right. Does she just switch the places of things? He almost countered a hook from Andrew but was swapped in such a way that he suffered the attack anyway. But how are they so coordinated? Did I not talk with my team enough? What can I - Got it!

Beatrix unhooked her arms from the ropes connecting the shield to her back, "I didn't really have too much of a plan when I asked for this from Constance." she pointed a finger at each plate, she then leaned in and whispered, "You distract her. I'm gonna pull these plates apart and launch them at her. You need to hit from as many angles as possible, she's quick about deflecting things."

John nodded and jumped towards their attacker, all of his limbs flailing wildly, as each of his blows were deflected by the assailant. The sound of the shield's plates coming apart drew both of their attention, as each piece of metal started flying at them.

"Not me! I'm your teammate!" John said as he thrashed about, distracting his attacker even more.

"Got you now!" Beatrix shouted as she brought all of her shield's pieces down upon her enemy, bombarding her with too many projectiles to reflect. She brought some plates down in such a way that her enemy's limbs were pinned and she was helpless.

I should have enough now, Constance thought as a faint cyan glow came from under his shirt and metal coiled around his arms until a pair of machine pistols appeared in his hands. His eyes gained a ferocious glint as he pointed both at one enemy each and held the trigger.

"Is he trying to kill us?" his unnamed attacker said, keeping their body as low to the ground as possible.

"Have ya gone crazy, pard'ner?" Andrew said as he too kept to the ground.

"Nah, they're blanks, 'pard'ner'." Constance rocked as he tossed a gun at the other two's heads, momentarily catching each of them off guard as he rushed his female assailant and throwing his fist down at her face; he didn't give her any time to breathe as he repeatedly struck her all over her body until her body could no longer keep up and she fainted.

Andrew, on the other hand, caught the firearm in a rope and swung it back at Constance, who grabbed the rope and, grabbing it near the base, spun before digging his heels into the ground, slamming Andrew along with it. While he had the upper hand, Constance grabbed some of the miscellaneous rope and tied up Andrew's arms an legs, feeling satisfied in his victory.

That was, before the bell sounded, ending the test.

August 15, 2296, 7:49 PST, Lobby of Unnamed Hotel

Constance, John, and Beatrix sat in the lobby of the hotel they were staying at in order to take the test.

"So, you think we passed?" John asked, ever the optimist.

"None of us had any flags at the end." Constance pointed out, his nearly unreadable expression giving off the smallest hint of disappointment.

"That's true but…" John's face grew worried at having to accept the facts.

"Would applicants five hundred, one thousand, and one thousand five hundred please follow me?" a man dressed in a tuxedo asked near the front of the room.

The three were seated in a room, clearly the office of some high ranking individual.

"Hello." the same woman from earlier turned around her chair in a rather dramatic fashion, "I'm here to inform you that you've all passed."

"Wait but, we didn't get any flags!" John rebuffed, twiddling his thumbs.

"Yes, I know. But we didn't grade you on flags." the woman said, her expression nearly as impassive as Constance, "Those were simply a catalyst to get you to act. I can't get into all the details now, but I'll say you got a - mm, seventy-five or eighty."

Just like that she grades us? Is she serious? John mused, looking as though he might be constipated.

"So, from now on, you'll be students here. You can call me… Principal Romanov."
