Ch 2 - Number 4 Privet Drive - November 1981
Minerva McGonagall had been sitting on a brick wall all day as a brown tabby cat, just watching She wasn't trying to be particularly nosy, but she had to see for herself what the muggles were like. Albus's seemingly brilliant plan to have the twins live with their disgusting relatives was in truth, complete and utter bogus. One day, that man was going to receive a ginormous piece of her mind. There was no way that Harry and Mira would grow up well with these whales that called themselves humans. From the time she had been here, she had seen a large beach ball (Dudley Dursley) throw multiple tantrums for sweets and throw food on the wall, only to be praised by his whale of a father and spoilt by his horse faced mother. And honestly, the man's attempts to shoo her away offended her greatly.
Now it was twilight, nearing dusk and the sky was streaked pink and orange. It should have been a beautiful sight, but Minerva was simply to miffed to enjoy the beauty of it all. It was then that she saw a man in long blue robes and a pointy wizard's hat, his piercing blue eyes twinkling even from afar.
'Ah! Professor McGonagall. I should have known you would be here.', he said, chuckling. 'Care for a lemon drop?'
'A what?', she asked, trying and failing to mask her annoyance.
'It's a muggle sweet which I am rather fond of.', he replied whilst popping one in his mouth.
'Is it true then? Is You-Know-Who gone? And the Potter family...Dead?', asked Professor McGonagall. She was agitated. There was no way that the dark wizard was dead, no less, killed by two 15 month old children. It was not magically possible, but the rumours said otherwise.
'I do not believe him to be truly dead, my dear Professor, but Lily and James have...met their unfortunate end. I do believe death is another adventure, however, I never wished them to encounter it so early. They had put their faith in the wrong person, though the children did survive.', Albus said. 'Oh look! Hagrid's here.'
From the sky, came the lulling roar of a large flying red motorcycle, a large hairy man sitting on top, holding what seemed to be two small packages wrapped in cloth.
'Professor Dumbledore sir. Professor McGonagall.',Hagrid said gruffly. 'I've got 'em both here.'
'There were no problems I presume?', asked Professor McGonagall, eyeing the bike as she spoke.
'No. Got that ol' thing from young Sirius Black that is. Poor bloke was distraught. Wanted to join Lily and James and blubbered some nonsense about it being all his fault. I put 'im right that is. No friend of the Potters would commit such sin. Told 'im to be brave, like the Gryffindor he and his friends were.', he blabbered.
Dumbledore twiddled his thumbs, looking extremely grave, the usual twinkle no longer in his eyes. 'I shall see to it that he finds a way to battle his grief.', he said. 'There is no need to create more of it in this world. Now, the matter of the twins'.
Hagrid held out his arms, and snuggled safely within them were the two children, Harry in a soft baby blue blanket and Mira swaddled in a similar pink one. Dumbledore motioned for Hagrid to place the children on the doorstep of the Dursley's home, after which he put a small envelope on the bundles, for the Dursleys to discover in the morning.
'Are you sure Albus, that this is the best place for them? I've been watching these people all day. I have never seen more unpleasant people, and much less a more nasty environment to raise a child, let alone two.', Minerva said, hoping to sway the already made up mind of her colleague.
'Yes Minerva. They must stay here so that the blood wards protect them. Lily's blood sacrifice still lives within them and will continue to do so until they come of age. Their best chance lies with their only living relatives. And if raised in the wizarding world, they may grow up hot headed and rather overconfident of their fame. They should have a chance at a normal childhood.', he replied.
Minerva pursed her lips. She was sure that they were as thin as ever, but she wasn't going to argue with Dumbledore. It was a losing battle. However, she could probably check up on them from time to time. Perhaps send Severus… That man needed something to look forward to in his life now that Lily was gone.
Long after both Albus and Hagrid had left, Minerva could still be seen sitting on the brick wall- as a tabby cat of course. She would stay there as long as it was required to ensure that the twins were taken into the house, and not shunned away from the family. Albus would hear from her if they did. He would have a plethora of things to hear if they did.
She stayed there as the woman, what was her name again? Oh right. Petunia Dursley. Sister of the beloved Lily Evans screamed on finding two children on her doorstep as opposed to milk. She stayed there to witness the rampant rage of the whale who called himself a man, screaming nonsense about drills and monetary figures. And she stayed there to see a young Dudley Dursley poke his cousin in the eye, only to receive a rather powerful burst of accidental magic from the other twin in return. One thing was for sure. The life of the Dursleys would never be the same again.
Minerva finally left when she heard the woman tell her husband that they would have to take the children in because of the 'old coot's' letter. And when the husband obliged after being promised a large chocolate cake in return for his 'leniency'.
If only she had stayed. Then she might have heard Vernon say that the twins would share the cupboard under the stairs as their room, and not the nursery with his son. She might have heard Petunia say that she was glad that she would never hear word of that 'freak she called a sister' again. And she might have heard that they planned to use all the money sent for the additional raising of 2 children was going to be spent on a vacation home in Majorca and beating Yvonne at poker in the casino.
