Chapter 2

School held no surprises. There was the same crowd around and a few new teachers.

My classmates treated me exactly as I expected them to do.

Nobody had a straight conversation with me about my family's disastrous summer but I could see it in their eyes. They pitied me.

We had lost everything and among that everything, my father. He just left us. There were no talks or even fights. He dissappeared

one morning after telling mum he needed time alone.

The first day went by quickly. I knew mum had to work late so I went home to prepare dinner. Our zero income made her take any

job avalable. She worked in the hospital's kitchen three times a week and she cleaned houses the rest of the days. We were new

in the neigborhood and the helped her alot. I on the other hand missed my old house.

That night mum looked too tired for her own good. I could see that something was bothering her so I did not mentioned that our

property was sold. I was finishing my homework when I heard her talking to someone on the phone.

"Thank you Carmen. I promise I will have the money by the end of the week," mum said and hung up. Her sobs were killing me.

We could not afford the rent.

I did not sleep that night. I left earlier for school so that I would have minimum time with my mother during breakfast. I needed to clear my mind.

I took the same route, again. The house looked quiet. The garden was all over it and it always seemed abit izolated. I stood outside the fense for a few seconds, my eyes refusing to turn and look away. When I finally worried about the time I made to leave. It was then that I noticed the little note where the sale paper was the day before.

"Help wanted".
