Chapter 2

The Dungeon Secrets

No, Kowalski has never believed in 'haunted' thing. Yes, the past events showed that the supernatural creatures may exist but legends, curses? It has always been an absurd to believe in a legend which was probably made up by a crazy person who wanted others to pay attention to him. However, after those events, he preferred to be on an alert. But he couldn't not follow them since he would look like a coward. And Katherine taking him as a coward was the last thing which he wanted.

They walked down by the gloomy stairs which led them to two tunnels' entrances. Rico pointed the flashlight at the walls which were covered by many weird marks… some kind of the hieroglyphs. Private happily noticed that there were no chains, blood, coffins or skeletons. It looked like the normal dungeons. Although it had that 'spooky' climate.

"Katherine and Kowalski, you two check the first tunnel, Rico, Private and Me the second one" Skipper commended. Rico spat out a second flashlight and handed it to Katherine. Before they had split up, Kowalski noticed that Skipper winked at him. Could Skipper actually know that he had feelings for Katherine and purposely told him to go with her? Well, he is the leader so why wouldn't he know everything about his teammates?.

"On the walls there are so many hieroglyphs, this must mean something" Katherine said while there were walking through the murky corridor.

"It looks like Chinese" Kowalski said.

"Look, these marks are different then these ones" Katherine said pointing at a part of the wall by the flashlight "I think one of the languages here is Urdu"

"Do you know it?"

"Well, I can't say that I know it, but I learned it a little when I was in India" she replied and looked closer at the letters "پورےچاندکیلعنت, ڈائن, دوگنا, ویمپائر, ویئروولف, ہائبرڈ… I think it says something about the curse, the full-moon… and there's a weird world, it means something like a hybrid…"

"Do you believe in curses?"

"No, I don't. Curse is something which people create when they don't have another explanation for some bed events. And these-" She said and pointed at the wall "-was probably something made by an insane person who has been hiding here once" They both laughed. They walked ahead and soon they reached a forking.

"Maybe we should split up and check the both tunnels?" Katherine suggested.

"No!" Kowalski quickly said and then realized his mistake. He wanted to face-flipper himself but he cleared his throat and added "I mean, it would be better if we didn't separate, in case that one of us would get lost"

"Well, that makes a sense. Then which corridor we choose?"

"Maybe the one which has more of these signs" Kowalski suggested and they walked into the left way. It could lead them to something. As they waddled through the tunnel, they suddenly fell into the darkness. Katherine slapped the flashlight angrily.

"Stupid appliance!" she said.

"The batteries probably ran out" Kowalski said as Katherine threw the flashlight away.

"Great" she said "How are we supposed to get back barely seeing anything?"

Suddenly the torches which have been on the walls lit and theirs' fire gave a quite good illumination. Katherine and Kowalski almost jumped, surprised by the sudden action. Then they realized how close they were and quickly jumped back from each other and blushed a little.

Now they could notice that this part of the tunnel was different. It was made by some brown bricks instead of the grey stone. There were a few entrances to other corridors. They looked ahead, infront of them there was a big round room. As they got to it, they could see that it was some kind of a library. The walls were covered by shelves with books and bookcases with even more books. It all looked so old and was full of the dust. However, there was a lit candle on a wooden desk, which was in the middle of the room, which meant that someone recently used it.

On the desk there was a very old and very big book, opened on a page with weird symbols. Katherine leaned over the book to study it, meanwhile Kowalski walked around the room looking at the books. There was nothing in the language he knew. He looked at Katherine. Her long chestnut hair was falling down her shoulders and the illumination of the candle was giving her eyes and hair a golden shine. He quickly looked away as she raised her golden eyes and opened her beak to say something. But she was interrupted by the noise… the footsteps. They looked around.

"Where can we hide? We don't have time to go back to the corridor and turn into other tunnel!" She said in the whisper.

"Well, this is a library right? In the movies, there are always some secret passages in the bookcases" Kowalski said and started moving some random books.

"Do you really believe that… ow" Katherine hasn't finished since the book which she had picked opened a hidden hideaway "Okay, this time you win" she admitted and they got inside before the bookcase was closed again. Fortunately it was quite bright there because of the library candles. But there wasn't much free space. They only could lean against the both walls, in front of each other and really close. Kowalski, personally, didn't mind.

They heard the footsteps were getting nearer and nearer and finally that someone reached the room.

"Who do you think it could be?" Katherine whispered.

"Maybe an insane person you were talking about earlier" Kowalski replied quietly.

Well, I only hope that he won't take that big book, I need to get it"

"Is the book important?"

"It looked like that, I need to know what it is about"

By the sound of the footsteps they could say that the someone was in the middle of room, probably at his desk. They heard the rustle of a turning page. They froze as they heard that the footsteps were heading towards them. It stopped near the bookcase with their hideaway. They waited for a few minutes barely breathing to not be noticed. Finally, it walked away. When they were sure that it was gone, Katherine pulled the bookcase so it showed the way back to the library.

"Coast is clear" she said and walked out followed by Kowalski. They sighed with relief. With satisfaction she noticed that the book was still on the desk.

"Do you think it's a good idea?" Kowalski asked.

"I don't think, I act" she said as she closed the book "I need to admit, it's quite heavy"

"I can take it for you" Kowalski quickly offered and grabbed the book. It was quite heavy.

"Thank you, but you don't have to" Katherine said and smiled.

"It's not heavy" Kowalski lied and smiled back. They walked back through the tunnel.

"Rico, a new flashlight, please" Skipper ordered as their flashlight ran out of the batteries. Rico spat out a new one and handed it to Skipper, who turned it on. The appliance lit for a second and then switched off itself. "It appears that some equipment doesn't work here"

"Does that mean that we will be walking in the total darkness?" Private asked nervously.

"No, of course not. We can use a… candle" Skipper said and Rico spat out a candle with the matches to lit it.

The illumination wasn't very good, but it at least made the place a little brighter. It was so lame, everywhere there was a cold stone wall, nothing more. They've been walking through the tunnel for a long time and they still haven't reached anything.

However, there was something what surprised them. Near the wall there were a few flowers and it was the last thing which Skipper expected to see there. The flowers were in the colors of blue and light purple. He grabbed few of them.

"They smell like a…" Private started feeling the familiar smell.

"A citron!" Rico finished.

"But what kind of flowers grow in the dungeons?" Private asked.

"I'll take them, Kowalski will tell us what they are" Skipper said.

"Do 'u 'hink that 'walski wil know? Rico asked.

"I think so. He knows almost everything, why wouldn't he know some stupid flowers?" Skipper said and looked ahead to see how infinite long the corridor was.

"I think we've been walking for long enough, maybe we should go back?" Private suggested.

"'rivete's right" Rico agreed.

"See? I told you that it's not haunted and there isn't any curse. We must focus on the Chuck Charles's news. And there no such a thing as monst-" Skipper was interrupted by a sudden, loud noise. It sounded like the heavy chains which had fallen to the ground. The three penguins froze.

"I think I'll go back" Private said and stepped back, so did Rico.

"Cowards" Skipper laughed.

"is not funy" Rico said. Normally, he wasn't like that. But who knows what was hidding in these dungeons?.

"Okay, let's get back. Rico, it would be better if you put out the canlde" Skipper said and the three penguins slipped through the corridor. But something was not okay. They heard the footsteps. Someone was chasing them…

Kowalski and Katherine walked out of the illuminated part of the tunnel. Further there was a total darkness. And knowing how many turns the dungeons had, they would simply get lost. They didn't have Rico who would spat out a candle or something like that. Their situation wasn't good.

"Maybe you should grab my flipper… so we wouldn't get lost" Kowalski said blushing a little. He blushed even more when he thought that she would notice that. Then he realized that it was too dark to see that.

"Okay, it's a good idea" she agreed and grabbed his flipper.

Then they heard a dreadful noise. The noise of a heavy chain falling to the ground. And then they heard a footsteps, the same which they had heard earlier. Without thinking and saying anything they quickly slipped forward. They had to hope that the thing will not get them. Whatever it was…

Suddenly they hit something. Not something… someone
