Chapter 1: Lint is Flammable Pt.1
After Marco arrived back on Mewni, he started making his way to Butterfly Castle. While walking through the village, he noticed people were still cleaning up the aftermath from Ludo/Toffee's takeover of the kingdom. He soon noticed a couple of villagers struggling to pull a cart full of lumber.
"Excuse me? Do you guys need any help with that?" Marco asked walking over to the villagers. "Yeah, but this cart here is pretty heavy, you sure you can handle it kid?" "I'll see what I can do to help if I can." Marco said as he took off his cape and tossed it and his bag into the cart. He then stood behind the cart with two other villagers while three others stood at the front.
"Okay here's what we'll do, you three push the cart from the back while we pull it from the front. Got it?" A villager with a shaggy brown beard said and received a "got it" from the others before looking to Marco.
"And kid, try not to strain yourself got it? If it gets too hard let us know, no need to pull something at your age." "Alright," Marco said as he placed his hands on the cart along with the other two villagers. "Okay ready? One… two… three push!" the breaded man yelled signaling for Marco and the other two with to push while he and the at front with him pulled.
"Is this… thing even moving?" Marco grunted as he kept pushing with all his strength. "I don't… think so kid, I mean… look at the ground, darn thing hasn't moved an inch." Marco looked down and true to the man's word, he was right, the cart was barely moving at all. "Argh, you have got to be kidding me here!" Marco said grunting in frustration.
"Sigh, well I don't think this darn cart is going anywhere today. Okay boys, that's enough, let's just leave it here and see if we can't get a hold something else to pull it." The bearded man said as he and the other two stopped pulling. "Alright then, hey kid, the boss said to stop." The villager said tapping Marco on the shoulder.
"Wait, I think… I think I can move this thing." Marco said as he dug his feet into the ground and continued to try and move the cart.
Unbeknownst to Marco and the villagers, the crystal around his neck started to faintly glow again.
"Look kid, it was kind of you want to help us, But it's not your fault this darn cart here won't-" Before the bearded man could finish, he and the others gasped in shock as they saw the cart begin to move while Marco pushed.
"Uhh, I guess the kid's got more muscle on him than we thought." The bearded man said with the other villagers nodding their heads still in shock of what they were seeing.
Marco kept pushing the cart with the villagers walking behind him until he heard the bearded man call out to him.
"Okay kid, you can stop it right in front of this empty space here." "Okay," Marco then stopped pushing and fell on his butt in exhaustion as the one of the villagers handed him some water.
"Phew, see guys… I knew we… could do it… if we tried hard enough." Marco said in between breaths as he drank the water while the villagers snickered.
"Ah, did I say something funny?" Marco asked when he saw them trying not to laugh out loud. "Well kid, the thing is… you were the only one pushing the cart." "Wait, what?" "Yeah, the rest of us stopped trying when we thought it wouldn't move at all. We were trying to tell you to stop too, but then we saw the cart start to move. Before we knew, you were pushing it as if that thing was loaded with feathers or something." The man said as he help Marco up on his feet.
"I… didn't think I'd gotten that strong," Marco said as he looked at his hands.
"Well thanks for the help kid, we wouldn't have been able to move this cart here if you hadn't come along." The bearded man said patting Marco on the back thankfully.
"Oh sure, it was no trouble really," Marco said as he got his cape and bag out of the cart. "Well good luck with the rebuilding you guys." Marco said as he continued on his way to the castle while the villagers waved goodbye.
"Hey boss," one of the villagers asked "What is it?" "Didn't that kid look like the one from the princess's song day?" he asked the bearded man as they watched Marco walk off. "I think… it is. If that boy's the princess's choice, then I think we may have a knight in the making there."
As Marco continued walking to the castle, his thoughts were busy figuring out how he was able to move that cart of lumber all on his own.
"Okay I'll admit I'm kind of strong, but not strong enough to move a cart full of wood on my own. I mean granted I did manage to punch a hole through a lizard lawyer but still…" Marco stops walking and looks down at the crystal before holding it in his hand. "Huh, maybe this necklace is some kind of lucky charm or something?" He says unsure before he starts walking again.
'Hmm? I don't think people who say something is lucky should sound unsure about it. Ha, ha.' A bubbly voice suddenly said which causes Marco to immediately stop and look around.
"Uh… who said that?" Marco asked looking around as people walked by. "I could've swore I heard a voice talking to me just now, … I must be hearing things is all." He said as he continued on his way to the castle, not noticing the crystal glowing again.
Once finally reached the castle, Marco stopped just before the front gate to think for a moment.
"I want to surprise Star that I came back, but if I go up to the front gate the guards will just go tell her. Hmm, what should I do?" Marco said quietly as he thought.
'Why don't you try climbing up to her room? That's one way to surprise someone.' The same voice said grinding Marco's thoughts to a halt as he looked around for where the voice was coming from.
"Hello? If someone's out here, could you please just come out and stop messing with me?" Marco asked only for no one to answer back. "You're… you're not a ghost that's haunting my friend's castle are you?" he asked only to yet again receive no answer. "Okay, I may have to tell Star that there's someone around the castle trying to freak people out. Climbing up to her room…" Marco said as he looked up at the sigh, well here's hoping my new luck holds out." Marco said as he walks through the gate and started climbing.
As Marco climbed up the castle, he let his thoughts wonder back to what happened with him pushing that heavy cart all by himself.
'That thing with the cart earlier, now that I think about it, I did kind of feel a bit… different. Maybe I have gotten a little bit stronger and just haven't noticed till now.' He thought feeling a bit confident before resuming his climb again. After 30 minutes of climbing(I don't know how long it took him to climb up to Star's room), Marco could see Star's room.
'Huh, it looks just like it did when she first came to earth and… is Star… singing in there?' He thought as he climbed up to her room window. When he was close enough, he tossed his bag in first, then climbed in himself. Once inside he saw Star was in fact singing, but she was singing into a burrito.
'Well at the very least it's not a sugarrito ugh,' Marco thought cringing at the thought. He walks up to Star who doesn't seem to have noticed him yet as she was still singing. When he reach her he said "Hey Star," which surprised her to where she hit him in the face with the burrito. He then heard the bubble voice from before laughing.
'Whether I'm going crazy or not, it's not that funny.' 'N-no, it's hilarious! Of my goodness, I didn't think she'd hit you with it! Ha ha ha!' The voice laughed joyfully while Marco groaned mentally.
"Marco! How many times have I told you- wait Marco!" Star said in surprise. "Hello to you too Star," He said as he got back up and dusted himself off. "Oh my gosh, it's great to see you but… what are you doing here?" "I missed it here, so I decided to back here permanently." He said.
Soon after he said that, Marco and Star look to see Tom walk in and he was also singing into a burrito.
"Tom?" Marco said getting the demon prince's attention.
"Marco!" "Tom! It's great to see you-oof!" Marco then got immediately tackled to the ground by one of the guards as more begin to swarm in and a couple stand protectively in front of Star as he is tied up with his cape.
"Guys calm down! It's just Marco." Star said. "I'm not an intruder, King River said I could be a knight. He even gave me this cape, see?" Marco said indicating to his cape which was used to tie him up.
The guard that had tied him up soon started laughing, before picking him up.
"Loooook, he's got a cape! Hahahahahahaha!" the other guards soon started to laugh too.
Marco then started hearing the voice in from before, excepted it sounded very un-amused by how the guards were laughing at him.
'I don't like how these people are laughing at you right now.' 'I'm more confused as to why their laughing right now than upset about it really. Also, why am I talking to my conscious and why does it sound like a girl for some reason?' 'Sigh okay first off, If you listen a bit more closely, you'll notice I sound just like your friend who's room you climbed up to.' 'It was your idea! I mean my idea or my mind's… Augh! I'm so confused right now.' 'Relax Marco, I'll explain everything. But before I do that, I'm going to shut these idiots up. So hang on a sec, kay?' the voice said confusing Marco. 'Um, how exactly are you-"
Before Marco could even finish his sentence, he saw a red light glowing from under his cape. Star and the guards also saw the red glow as it started shining brighter.
"Uh Marco? What's happening?" Star asked as she saw the red light grow. "I don't know Star!" "Uh, princess? Should I-" the guard didn't get to finish before a red shockwave burst from Marco. Star raised her arms and closed her eyes, preparing to get knocked into the wall. But when she felt nothing happen, she slowly opened her eyes and saw that she and Tom were still standing while it looked like the guards were only ones blasting into the walls.
"Um Star? What the heck did Marco just do?" Tom asked as he looked around at all the guards that got knocked into the wall. "I don't really how Marco did-wait Marco!" Star said as she ran up to him as he looked like he passed out. "Marco! Marco wake up! Come on please Marco!" Star shouted as she shook him.
(Marco's Mindscape)
"Ugh, what the heck happened just now?" Marco asked as he rubbed the back of his head. He then looked around and saw that he was laying on his bed in his room back home on earth. "How… did I end up back at home? And what happened to Star and everyone else?" Marco said as he started to panic at what had happened.
"Ha, ha, you panic very quickly when you don't understand something, you know that right?" the same familiar sounding bubbly voice Marco had been hearing said in an amused tone.
Marco looked to where the voice came from and saw a girl sitting at his desk who looked exactly like Star, except her hair was bright red and she had yellow eyes in place of Star's long blonde hair and blue eyes. She was wearing a Japanese style sleeveless red shirt, matching red shorts and red sandals. She wore white fang-shaped earrings and she didn't have hearts on her cheeks. However, the one thing about her that grabbed Marco's attention was the long, red-scaled tail that was swaying behind her.
The two looked at each other in silence, until the Star look alike decided to speak.
"You know it's considered impolite to stare at someone right?" She said giggling a little. "O-oh sorry, I didn't mean to stare, really I didn't!" "Relax Marco, I'm just messing with you a little, there's no need to get all flustered about it." "Oh, okay then. Umm, we're you the one who I've been hearing in my head?" "Yep that was me, and as you can see I'm not a ghost." The look alike said smiling.
"Well yeah, I can see- oh wait, you heard me say that earlier didn't you?" "Yep, but don't let it bother you too much, I mean it's not every day you start hearing voices in your head." "Where I come from, when that happens to people they usually get sent to a mental hospital." "Ha, ha, that's true. So… aren't you going to ask me something? Like maybe where you are or why I look like your best friend?" she asked.
"Oh yeah, right. Umm, could please maybe explain for me?" asked nervously.
"Okay, well for right now, I guess I can tell you two things. My name, what this place is and why I look like your friend Star." "Why just those two things?" "Cause one, you passed out after I did that shockwave to quiet those idiot guards down, so I don't want your two friends to worry too much. And two, I kind of need to do a bit of an… overview of… something." She said thinking for a second.
"Wait, I passed out!" Marco said in a panicked voice. "Don't worry you fine. Geez, you really need to learn not to panic so much." "O-okay, so can you start by telling me your name please?" "Sure thing, for now you can call me Scarlet. As for where we are, right now we're in your mindscape." The girl named Scarlet said.
"My Mindscape?" Marco said confused. "That's right, it's like a special place created by your mind using memories." Scarlet explained. "Wow, so my mindscape… is my room back on earth?" "Well technically, you can change the appearance of your mindscape, you just have to focus on a specific memory and it'll change." "Oh okay. Now can tell me… why look like Star?" "Oh right that, well the thing is that-"
The two suddenly hear shouting coming from all around them.
"Marco?! Please wake up!" "Star!?" Marco said jumping up from his bed when he heard her shout.
"Oh boy, she must be really worried about you, looks like I'm going to have to wait a bit before I can finish explaining things." Scarlet said as the room started to fade away into a white mist.
"Wait, how am I supposed to talk to you again?" Marco asked as the room continued to fade away.
"Don't worry, I'll still be able to talk to you. Besides, you're going to need someone to make sure you don't make too much of dork out of yourself right?" Scarlet said in a teasing voice as she and the room disappeared into the white mist.
Marco's eyes slowly open as he starts to wake up.
"Uh man, what just happened?" He said noticing he was laying down on Star's bed.
"Marco!"
He quickly looks to his left and sees Star run over to him when she heard him wake up.
"You're okay! You really had me worried your big dork!" Star said in worried tone. "Uh, sorry to worry you like that Star." "Sigh it's okay Marco, but what was that you did just now when the guards grabbed you?" "I… don't really know myself, I'm not entirely sure it was me who did that." Marco said before looking around the room.
"Speaking of the guards, what happened to them? And where's Tom?" "Well the guards ran out of here after that shockwave thing you did and I told Tom I'd look after you until you woke up, so he went home." Star said. "Okay, so… now what?" Marco asked as he got up from the bed. "Now, we go tell my Mom and Dad that you're here and maybe sort this whole "knight thing" out. I asked two of the guards to wait outside my room so they can escort us." "Oh, okay then," Marco said as he started walking to the door.
"Uh, but Marco?" Star said grabbing his arm. "Just don't be surprised if they ask you to… not be so close to me… or them." "Yeah, I kind of figured," Marco said as he and Star walked out of her room to go talk to her parents.
Once they found Star's parents, Marco explained what happened. However, Star said to leave out what happened in her bedroom and even told the guards not to mention it either. After Marco had finished his explanation, Queen Moon looked over at River.
"Sigh River, I'm so confused right now. You told Marco he could become a Knight?" "Well… yeah. I didn't think we'd ever see him again, haha." "I'm sorry Marco, but I'm afraid that's not how it works." Moon said.
"But, King River gave me a knight's cape, M for Mewni." Marco said holding the cape up. "No dear boy, that's my meat blanket." River said which left Marco flabbergasted. "Meat blanket!?" "Yes, I also have a cheese doily." River said holding up a small ornamental yellow mat that had a C printed on it. Moon just sighed while placing her hand on her face in embarrassment.
"But, I wore this thing every day, for weeks." Marco said in a crestfallen voice.
"I sorry Marco, but becoming a knight is no easy task." River said in a serious tone. "Yes, it takes years of intense training dear." Moon added.
' They're right Marco, you can't just become a knight.' Scarlet said within Marco's mind. 'Though granted, usually when a king or queen give someone a Knight's cape, it's usually means that person is entitled for a chance at knighthood. And it also helps that the cape is actually a cape and not a meat blanket.' She said trying and failing at not laughing while Marco groaned internally.
'I hope you're going somewhere with this.' He asked as he heard her start to calm down from her laughing. 'Sorry, sorry. My point is before you can become a knight, you have to be a squire first. Their like knights in training before they become knights themselves. So just ask to squire a knight, I'm sure they'll let at least let you try first.' 'Okay, if you say so.' Marco said before looking to Moon and River.
"Uh, King River and Queen Moon, is it possible for me to at least be a squire to a knight?" Marco asked.
Moon thought about it for a minute, before leaning over to River.
"River, are any of our knights in need of a squire?" "Wait, I've got it! How about we set him up with Sir Pop, lock and dropith, hmm? That old scamp!" "Um, actually he popped, locked and dropped." Moon said regretfully. "You mean he's," "Mm-hm," "Oh my," " Star, why don't you have Marco stay with you? It will give two a chance to catch, while we figure this out." Moon said.
Marco smiled at the chance to be able hangout with Star while her parents found a knight for him to squire. Scarlet could feel how happy Marco was through the crystal, she felt glad that he could reconnect with his friend.
"Wait, wait, wait, I know a knight he can squire for." Star said suddenly.
"You do?" Moon asked. "Yeah, don't worry Mom; I know just the person. Come on Marco," Star said ushering Marco to follow.
After they left the throne room, Star lead Marco down a winding staircase.
"Man Star, I'm sorry about this. I feel like I just crash landed into your life," "Welp, we figured that out." Star said cutting Marco off. "Yeah, uh cool," Marco said as an awkward settled between the two until Marco heard Scarlet's voice.
'Okay, what's going with you two?' 'Huh? what do you mean?' 'I mean why are you both so silent now? I thought she'd be really excited to see you again, but I'm not seeing any trace of the excitement she showed in the memories you have of you two.' Scarlet said a little disappointed. 'Wait how could you see if Star was excited? And when did you have time to look at my memories!?' Marco asked. 'Oh I was looking at them before I spoke to you. And don't worry, I didn't look at any of the embarrassing ones, just the ones that I found... interesting.' ' That doesn't make me feel any better. Anyway, how could you see that Star wasn't excited? Are you like, looking through my eyes or something?' 'Nope, to be honest I could barely see her expression since you stuffed me into your hoodie.' Scarlet said. 'How could I've have stuffed -wait, the only thing I stuffed into my hoodie was-' Marco was about to say until he heard Star.
"Marco? You doing okay?" Star asked looking back at him. "Oh, yeah I'm fine Star, just thinking is all." Marco said not wanting to bring up the fact that he was speaking with someone in his head. "So were you asking me something?" "Yeah, I was asking what Jackie thought about you coming back to Mewni." "Oh well... she wasn't really into it. But you know me, no one telling me what to do, ha." He said only to have Star look back at him with a plain look. "That... that was a joke,"
'Well it wasn't very good joke there Marco,' Scarlet said to which Marco groaned.
"Actually yeah, she... she broke up with me." "Well... I'm very sorry about that."
'That didn't sound like she was sorry at all to me,' Scarlet said in a slightly irked tone.
"So... are you and Tom?" "Yep," Star quickly as she continued walking down while Marco looked on wide eyed for a second before catching up to her.
'Wait, so she and that demon boy from earlier?' 'I... guess so,' Marco said answering Scarlet.
Once they reached the bottom of the spiral stairs, Star and Marco stood in front of door.
"Oh look, here's that door we were walking to." Star said trying to sound excited.
'Knight of the wash? What on earth is –oh no,' 'What's wrong?' Marco asked when he heard the disappointment in Scarlet's voice. 'Your… you're going to have to see for yourself Marco, something tells me you're not going to like where Star is placing you.' She said in a slightly irked tone which confused Marco.
Star opened the door and as she and Marco walked in, they saw multiple piles of clothes on the ground as well as socks that were hang on laundry lines. They soon heard someone whooping and hollering inside the biggest pile of clothes that was in the middle of the room.
"Ha! Got you!" a person yelled triumphantly as he emerged from the top of the clothes pile holding up a sock.
"Ah here's our guy, Sir Lavabo, Hi," Star said waving to the person while Marco looked on a bit worried.
"Ah Princess," the person named Sir Lavabo said as he looked down before making his way down from within the pile to the ground to meet the two. "I'll be with you shortly, I have a job to finish." He said as he gazed seriously at the sock in his hand. He then climbed out of the clothes pile and walked over to a large table and placed the sock next to its matching pair along with the other socks that were on the table.
"There, every sock in the kingdom now has it's mate. Now how may I be of service to you princess?" Lavabo said as he stood facing Star and Marco.
"Well, I just decided to get you a squire." Star said as she placed her hand on Marco's shoulder.
"My own squire, what do you call him?" Lavabo asked in anticipation.
"Marco Diaz," "What? I'm squiring for the laundry guy?" Marco said in slight disappointment. "Yeah, this is Sir Lavabo, he's super cool."
'Does cool mean something else here on Mewni? Because no offence to this guy, but a knight who is in charge of cleaning the royal family bed sheets, is not someone I'd call… super cool.' Scarlet commented unimpressed with the knight of wash while Marco silently agreed with her.
"But, wouldn't I be all the way down here in the basement?" Marco asked Star. "Actually, it's the subbasement. You're going love it here Marco, it's so moody." Star said trying to sound upbeat.
Marco was about to say something, but before he could, Scarlet decided to speak up.
'I already know what your going to ask her Marco, but don't waste your breath.' 'But why not?' Marco asked. ' I know Star can't do anything she wants just cause she's a princess, but If I'm all the way down we won't even see each other.' 'I know that Marco, but maybe there's a reason she doesn't want to see you. But still, if she's supposed to be your friend you'd think she'd at least maybe talk with you about it.' 'Yeah, but I can't just talk to Star about it straightforward,' Marco said while Scarlet groaned before an idea came to her.
'Alright Marco, if you don't feel comfortable talking to Star about what's bother her… then I'll just ask her myself then.' Scarlet said. ' Oh and if what you were going to ask me earlier is right, then I suggest you un-zip your hoodie, like right now.' She added.
Before Marco could even respond to what Scarlet meant, the same bright red light started to shin through his hoodie getting Star and Lavabo's attention.
"Marco? Why are you glowing again?!" Star said as she and Sir Lavabo started to back away. "I have no clue Star –Whoa!" Marco started to say before he was launched into the air and started spinning for several seconds until he flew into another pile of clothes.
"Augh, well, at least the landing was soft." Marco said groaning as he climbed out of the pile.
"Marco, what is that… what that thing up there, was that what was making glow and float just now?" Star asked as she pointed up.
Marco looked up and saw the crystal that he had been wearing around his neck, was now floating in the air. Before anyone could say anything, a bright, red light burst from the crystal blinding everyone. The light soon started to fade allowing the three to unshielded their faces.
"Okay Marco, what's going on? First you come back all of a sudden and then –huh?" Star stopped mid-sentence when she saw Marco and Lavabo had their mouths hanging open.
"Uh Marco? Lavabo? What's wrong with you guys? You look like you've both are looking at a ghost or something." Star said confused as to why they both looked stunned.
"Well… I wouldn't say their looking at a ghost, I think they're both more or less surprised at what their looking at right now." A voice that sounded just like Star's said from behind.
Star quickly turned around and just like Marco and Lavabo, her mouth fell open when she saw a girl with bright red hair, yellow eyes and a long red lizard-like tail who looked just like her, standing there, her arms folded with the crystal around her neck as her tail swayed behind her.
"Sorry about that Marco, but I did tell you to un-zip your hoodie." Scarlet said looking passed Star and Lavabo.
"I... what... how..." Marco stuttered unable to form a coherent sentence after seeing Scarlet just appear in front of him, Star and Sir Lavabo.
"U-um, who are you? and why did you just come out of Marco's hoodie?" Star asked still in shock at what just happened.
"Oh right, should probably introduce myself huh?" Scarlet said rubbing the back of her head modestly.
"My name is Scarlet and it's a pleasure to meet you all." She said placing her left hand on her chest and bowing slightly to Star and Lavabo who were still shocked beyond belief.
"Well, a pleasure to meet you Lady Scarlet, but could you maybe explain why you look like Princess Butterfly and why you emerged from my new squire?" Lavabo asked recovering from his shock.
"Okay Sir... Lavabo was it? Allow me to clarify on that for you and the princess. I did not come out of Marco, I manifested from the crystal he was wearing, see?" Scarlet said pointing to said crystal that was now around her neck as Lavabo nodded his head in understanding.
"Now while I would also like to explain why I look similar to Princess Star," Scarlet takes the crystal from around her neck and tosses it to Marco who wakes up from his stupor and fumbles it before catching it. She then walks over to Star who was still shell shocked, grabs her by her arm and starts pulling her towards the door.
"Hey! what are you doing!?" Star yells waking up from her shock to notice Scarlet pulling her to the door. "Relax will ya? Sheesh, you get just as worked up as Marco. I just want to have a little... girl talk with you, that's all really." "But why would you," "I just want to get to know Marco's best friend is all. So, is there anywhere we can go and talk?" Scarlet asked smiling at Star.
"Well, there's the castle rose garden but-" "Alright, let's go there then. Marco, me and Star are going to have a little talk. While we're gone, just do what Sir Lavabo tells you okay? Cool, see ya in a few." Scarlet then drags Star out the door and uses her tail to close it behind them.
"Hey wait a sec... and their gone. What the heck was that about?" Marco said still a bit confused.
"Ah, a question to be answered in due time." Lavabo said. "But for now Marco Diaz, are you ready for your first quest?" He said placing his arm around Marco. "Yeah... sure," Marco said taking the knight of the wash's arm from around him deciding go along and listen to Sir Lavabo, since he didn't know what else to do with Scarlet suddenly appearing and then dragging Star off with her to talk.
"So what are we doing first?" "You... must empty the lint catcher." He said ominously.
Marco just sighed as he took his cape off and placed it on one of the sock tables.
"I really hope those two come back soon," He thought desperately as got ready for his... "quest".
