Mad in Love - Chapter 1 - At last!

"May all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here below the high-rock for a clan meeting!" Brightpaw felt excitement rushing through her veins. A warrior at last! She padded over to where a crowd was quickly gathering, and began to groom herself, slowly and meticulously. I need to look perfect! This is my big moment! She glanced at her brother who was sitting nearby, and her sister, the medicine cat apprentice, who was watching her siblings, her eyes slightly sad, but proud nonetheless. I hope Dewpaw has her ceremony soon! She probably feels left out. Brightpaw continued to wash herself, feeling a pang of sympathy that her sister would not be made a full medicine cat for moons yet. As she continued washing Brightpaw was surveying the crowd, wondering what her new name would be. Her gaze passed over Smokestreak. We can be together soon, my love. "Today two young apprentices have proven themselves as worthy, loyal warriors." Brightpaw was jerked out of her thoughts and finished washing quickly to look up at her leader. "I, Pinestar, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice." Brightpaw flushed as the eyes of all her clanmates turned to her. "She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a loyal warrior in her turn." By this point Brightpaw was shaking with excitement and nerves. "Brightpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and protect your clan even at the cost of your life?"

"I do!" Brightpaw squealed

"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give to you your warrior name. Brightpaw, from this moment on you shall be known as Brightsun! StarClan honours your hard work and compassion for your clanmates, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan." Brightsun was in a daze. She stepped forward barely thinking, and completed the last part of the ritual just on instinct. Her head was buzzing, she could only hear snippets of her brother's ceremony. I never thought I would be this excited at my ceremony. Then she remembered. As a warrior she was allowed to have a mate, and that meant... Smokestreak! It took all her energy not to shout out his name, to join the chorus of the other cats' chants.. wait.. Brightsun snapped back to reality, realising that the ceremony was over, and that the cats were chanting her name. She glanced around the crown of cats, most of whom were congratulating her or her brother, trying to spot one in particular. "Brightsun!" She whipped around to the source of the voice, which was, as she had guessed, Smokestreak. Brightsun shouldered through the crowd to him and purred as she buried her head in his luscious fur. This day can't get any better. Can it?

"Smokestreak, Brightsun and Robinfire, you can go on hunting patrol!" Brightsun looked up from the chaffinch she had been enjoying. She was going on patrol with Smokestreak! She padded towards the bramble entrance and washed herself, waiting for the rest of the patrol. "Our first warrior patrol together!" She heard a joyous meow behind her, and turned to see the love of her life, Smokestreak. Brightsun purred happily. "After this I can help you build your nest in the warrior's den!" Smokestreak exclaimed.

"I'll build it next to yours." Brightsun assured him, watching his face light up even more. "Just remember that I have my vigil tonight" Brightsun added.

"Can we stop chatting and get going please?" Robinfire's annoyed voice sounded behind them.

"Okay, grumpy." Brightsun giggled, setting off, her tail entwined with Smokestreak's, Robinfire following the two lovebirds, the hint of a smile on her face.

Squirrel! Brightsun surveyed the surrounding forest, searching for the source or the mouth-watering scent. Suddenly her golden eyes swept over a bright, fiery red creature. Pinpointing it, she crouched and began to stalk forward, placing each paw slowly and meticulously so to not disturb the prey. Brightsun shuffled her back legs, alerting the squirrel to her position. Fox dung! Brightsun cursed, as the squirrel dashed away, through the trees and… right into Smokestreak's paws! Brightsun yowled in jubilance as her annoyance melted into admiration for the furry grey warrior.

"Wow! That was a great catch!" Brightsun purred, a look of pure love and adoration decorating her perfect features. Smokestreak puffed up in pride, and lovingly licked Brightsun's ear. Brightsun felt a bubble of happiness blossom inside her, that popped suddenly as she noticed the strong scent of fox lurking in the trees. "Smokestreak!" She squealed, her eyes wide with fear.

"What is it, love?" He murmured, oblivious to the danger.

"Fox!" Brightsun hissed. Smokestreak looked alarmed. "We need to find Robinfire!" Brightsun insisted, her eyes darting around, scared that a fox would suddenly leap out of the undergrowth.

"No!" Smokestreak meowed loudly, jerking Brightsun out of her cautious trance.

"What do you mean?"

"We don't need Robinfire! We're warriors now! We can do it! I can do it!" Smokestreak looked determined to prove himself to his lover. Brightsun looked unsure.

"B-but I already love you Smokestreak! You-you don't need to prove yourself!" Pleaded Brightsun, but Smokestreak was not to be swayed. He was already scenting the air, straining to pick up the scent of fox. Brightsun sighed deeply and sent a quiet prayer to Starclan before joining Smokestreak on his hunt. Brightsun inhaled deeply, trying to catch the scent again. Surprisingly, it was much stronger than before. To her right, Smokestreak was breathing heavily. Whipping round to tell him to stop making such annoying noises, she came face to face with a pair of menacing golden eyes. Fox!
