The second time he saw her, he was at the mall. It was one of the most absurdly expensive stores in that place; he was looking for a pair of shoes to give his mother as a present for her birthday. Esme loved shoes.

The clerk was showing him a good selection of shoes but suddenly a scandalous red color came to mind. He remembered those red heels and had an idea. Pointing out to a similar version at a shelf on the the opposite side, the young clerk immediately brightened. "Blue is beautiful!"

He went out of the store carrying along the shiny blue present, as well as a silver handbag. It was almost a thousand dollar bill. He thought it was an absurd amount, but it was for his mother, so it was worth it.

After leaving the place, he drove to his parents' house. Today was his mother's birthday and as a good son he was he would personally congratulate her.

He arrived at his parents' house a few minutes later, his mother was the one who opened the door.

He hugged her awkwardly and handed her the bag and shoes. At her bright smile, he knew it was the right choice for a present.

"Was it the clerk who helped you choose these?" She asked, her eyes never leaving her shiny new toys.

He shrugged and thought not exactly.

At that moment he remembered the girl Emmett had spoken of, the same girl he had seen in the coffeeshop earlier. The same girl who helped him choose his mother's birthday gift. His eyes seemed to brighten.
