'What is it?' I asked my brother when he handed me an envelope.
'Just open it Lex, it's addressed to you,' he said with a small smile.
'But you already know what's in it, don't you?'
Connor shrugged 'I know who it's from and I want to make sure that you open it.'
I sighed and sat down at the kitchen table. I had a feeling that I wouldn't like what was inside this envelope and I was right. As soon as I took the letter out I saw it was from the Savant Network, I recognized their logo. The network is an organization with Savants from all over the world, they work together to keep the peace between the savants (and humans who are unaware we exist) and they also catch the bad guys. The beginning of the letter said that they were planning something new to help us savants. I gave my brother a questioning look but he just raised his eyebrows and told me to read. My eyes scanned the letter again but when I saw the word soulfinder I immediately dropped it.
I looked at Connor again 'Read.' Was the only thing he said.
With a frown and trembling hands I picked it up again. They organized a convention for Savants who didn't find their soulfinders yet, they planned a whole day for a matching program. It was a chance to find your soulfinder, a big chance. I stopped reading when I realized why Connor gave me this.
'Why?' I asked.
Connor sighed and took a seat next to me.
'Why?' I asked again 'You know that I don't want to find my soulfinder.'
I felt myself getting angry but Connor just smiled softly and used his gift on me. He could manipulate emotions and right now he was forcing me to calm down.
'I want you to be happy Lex, you're twenty-two and it's time to grow up and face your fear. Finding him will be the best thing that ever happened to you, you'll see. You just need to give it a chance Sis, we don't want you to fall apart like our uncle did.'
I glared at him 'I also don't want to end up like mom! It's my life Con, my decision.'
Connor shook his head with a disappointed look in his eyes 'I can't believe you Lex, you've seen what finding Olivia did to me. The same can happen to you, you can be happy again. I know how you feel, I really do, I felt the same way before I found Liv but Sis it's the most precious gift that a savant is given you can't just throw that away!'
I huffed and folded my arms 'Oh watch me.'
My brother sighed again and for a few minutes we were silent. I played with the ring on my finger and thought about Connor's words.
'What if we make a deal?' Con suddenly said.
I looked up, surprised because I knew he hated making deals. He usually lost.
'What kind of deal?' I however loved making deals and bets.
'Go to the convention, do it for me and for mom and dad. They would've want this for you, if mom was still here she would make you go, drag you if you wouldn't listen. If you don't find him then I will leave you alone, I won't bring this up again, ever. But if you do find him I want you to give him a chance.'
I frowned, the thought that I might find him there scared the hell out of me but I loved the idea of Connor leaving me alone about this stupid soulfinder crap. How big was the chance that he'd be there? He could be anywhere in this world.
'Can I think about it?' I asked but Connor immediately shook his head. 'I waited as long as possible to give you this letter because I knew how you would react, I want your answer now.'
I narrowed my eyes at him 'When is it?'
He smiled 'I will tell you after we have a deal.'
I huffed 'This is so unfair, I can't do this Con.'
My brother grabbed both my hands in his and squeezed them 'You can Lex, you're a strong woman. The convention is only a few hours away and who knows, maybe you'll make some new friends while you're there. Make it a short trip, take some time off.'
I let go of his hands and rubbed my temples 'Are you serious about this deal? You'll really leave me alone if I don't find him there?'
Connor nodded 'But only if you really tried, I have connections there so I will know if you didn't go.'
I groaned, bye bye plan. I thought about his words once more, I could always run right? The deal would be off but still, I could always back off if I wanted to. Mom always used to say she never was truly happy until she found dad, what if Connor was right? What if I did end up like our uncle, unstable and always angry, I didn't want that. I took a deep breath before I turned to my brother, his eyes looked hopeful and I couldn't help but smile. He really loved me.
'Do we have a deal?' he asked.
I bit my lip before I slowly nodded 'We have a deal.'
