We begin staring at each other, and after a few seconds my eyes start to tear up, and I can no longer see the beautiful girl. I must have blinked, even though it must have only been a split second of doing so, because the girl starts smiling triumphantly. This girl's good.

Patrick then asks the girl the same question as he did to me, and she replies by saying:

"My name is Hazel. I'm sixteen. Thyroid with mets in my lungs. I'm okay."

Hazel. Hazel. Hazel. I kept saying the same name around in my head. I'm usually crap at remembering names, but I think Hazel is someone special ... or is going to become one to me.

I HAVE to remember that name.

I am taken away from my thoughts when Patrick asks me a question in a hollow deep voice.

"Augustus, perhaps you'd like to share your fears with the group."

"My fears?" I replied.

"Yes"

I didn't need another second to think.

"I fear oblivion. I fear it like the proverbial blind man who's afraid of the dark."

I then see Isaac, sitting two seats away from me, cracking a smile – at least someone gets what I'm saying.

"Too soon," he said.

I began smiling as well, and then begin talking once again.

I look up at Hazel, and the first thing I noticed was that she was still staring at me. I lowered my eye line to her now un-puckered lips once again and grinned like a madman.

Her whole face flushed a deep shade of pink ... so cute!

"Was that insensitive?" I asked, remembering I was still in a conversation. "I can be pretty blind to other people's feelings."

Isaac burst out laughing, but I could see on Patrick's face, he wasn't very pleased with my words of wisdom - or so I call them.

I see Patrick gulp and then he begins speaking.

"Augustus, please. Let's return to you and your struggles. You said you fear oblivion?"

I return my facial expression to neutral, looking at Hazel in the corner of my eye.

"I did." I respond in my normal voice.

Patrick placed a confused look on his face, he seemed somewhat lost.

"Would, uh, would anyone like to speak to that?"

In the small room, no one put their hand up for the first few seconds after the question, but then all of a sudden Hazel raised her hand, lifting up her shirt very slightly at the bottom.

I wanted to look ... I really did... But I let the gentleman within me reign through me.

After all, I'm pretty sure I didn't want to get horny in the house of god.

Patrick then looked shocked and pleased all at once. Was Hazel one of those quiet kids that never opened up to the crowd?

"Hazel!" Patrick exclaimed.

Hazel looked over to me, and I then looked back. Her green eyes transported you to a completely different place.

A peaceful place.

No violence; no fighting, and best of all no death.

The 'D' word is never spoken in our household; it reminds my parents of the near death experience of me having Cancer – it may sound like I am being a 'pussy' as Isaac would say, but it breaks my heart when I see my parents upset; especially when it is because of me.

Hazel then starts speaking; in an absolutely amazing tone of voice which I am sure I'll never ever forget throughout all of my days left on this planet – I've said it twice already; so I know I will never forget.

"There will come a time, when all of us are dead. All of us. There will come a time when there are no human beings to remember that anyone ever existed or that our species ever did anything. There will be no one left to remember Aristotle of Cleopatra, let alone you. Everything that we did and built and wrote and thought and discovered will be forgotten and all of this" – she makes an action using her arms – "will have been for naught. Maybe that time is coming soon and maybe it's millions of years away, but even if we survive the collapse of our sun, we will not survive forever. There was time before organisms experienced consciousness, and there will be time after. And if the inevitability of human oblivion worries you, I encourage you to ignore it. God knows that's what everyone else does."
