A New Life- Chapter 2
Mairead's POV
My father brought me to the train station that he had gone to when he went to Hogwarts. The butterflies in my stomach were fluttering around faster with each mile we drove. He seemed so proud too... What if I was horrible at magic? What if I couldn't figure it out?
"I can practically hear the gears turning in your mind... So what's up?" He asked, his eyes still on the road.
"What if I'm bad at magic?" I blurted out. "What if I'm no good at all? Maybe I'm even a squib!" He smiled.
"You know when you were a toddler you used to zap people? I was so proud! Your mother wasn't too happy but still- the point is you're going to do fine!" He said with a reassuring smile. "Now I should concentrate... How do muffles drive these stupid death traps of metal?"I stifled a laugh.
Soon after we arrived at the train station. My dad pulled my trunk behind him.
"You have your robes? And your toothbrush? How bout your wand? Did you bring parchment?" He asked nervously for the fifth time.
"Don't worry dad I have everything. I'm going to be ok. And besides Wren will be with me and nobody messes with us!" I said with a grin. He smiled a little and nodded.
"I know. I know. My little girl is all grown up! Cmon we better get you to your platform. 9 3/4. Here we are. Just run straight at the wall." He said calmly pointing in between the two platforms. Straight at a brick wall. Of course. How else would you get to wizard school? Certainly not a car of course that would be too easy. I nodded and ran at the wall. At the last minute I spun and hit the wall with my back, sending me falling backwards.
I screamed and hit the ground with an oomph. I sat up rubbing my head as my dad calmly stepped through. He smiled and pulled me to my feet.
"You should probably go find Wren, she's probably all alone." He said gently. "I'm going to miss you. I love you." He said pulling me into a hug.
"I love you too dad. I'll write lots of letters. I promise!" I said. He nodded, handed me my trunk and pushed me towards the train. I smiled back at him and I swear a single tear on his cheek. Taking a deep breath I walked up the stairs.
I looked through the windows of all the compartments. I soon found her talking to another blonde girl. I greeted them both learning that the other girls name was Azalea.
Soon we were joined by a girl named Lillain and two friends named Kaia and Rayne.
The train began moving beneath our feet. I sat up on my knees and looked out the window to wave goodbye to my father. The other girls joined me in waving to family members, excepting Wren of course. Kaia and Rayne must have been pureblood as their whole family was there, I think Lillain and Azalea were half bloods like me since only their mothers was there.
We all stared out watching the world pass by. This was my first time on a train so I hadn't seen anything like this before. I pressed my hands against the glass and gazed out at the streams and rivers snaking across the hillsides.
Soon after we all returned to our seats.
"What houses do you want to be in?" she asked with a smile. I hadn't really thought about it before. My dad was in Gryffindor... But I did love school maybe I would be in Ravenclaw... But then again...
"Hufflepuff." I said automatically. Hufflepuff? Where did that come from?
"My whole family has been syltherin so that's where I want to go." Kaia said with a grin.
"Me too!" Exclaimed Rayne. Man these two could be twins... Are they? No... Well- nah I decided.
"I kinda want to be in Ravenclaw." Said Lillain. "How about you Wren?"
"I um I'm not sure... Hufflepuff I guess." She said quietly.
"Awesome!" Said Lillain.
We began talking about everything we would learn there.
"I can't wait for herbology. I've always loved gardening... Maybe I'll be good at it!" I voiced.
"I can't wait for astronomy and divination!" Said Lillain, she wasn't as shy as she had been at first.
"Defense against the dark arts and flying lessons for me!" Said Wren.
"I've heard potions is fun!" Added Rayne.
"Transfiguration!" Kaia piped in smiling.
"Don't forget about charms!" Reminded Azalea.
~~~~~~a few hours later~~~~~~~~
"We should probably change into our robes... We're getting close to the school..." Pointed out Kaia. We are? Oh ya I guess so. Looks like I was a bit distracted... Was it really only a few short hours ago that we met? It feels like a lifetime ago... Now none of us have our shoes off and are talking about embarrassing moments. I'm probably going to end up in the same house as at least one of them... I hope so at least.
We each changed into our robes and stood silently in a semi circle. Are they all as nervous as me? If they are then they're pretty good at hiding it. I brushed a loose strand of hair behind my ear and turn to my trunk. I grab my owls cage and feed her a few treats.
"Hey there melon. How's my sweet angel?" I smile at her cooing and gently set the cage down.
All the other girls are getting ready to go too. But they all look pretty calm maybe a bit paler than usage but that's it. I stand up and catch a brief glimpse of my reflection in the window too. I don't look scared either, I don't know why but this makes me proud.
"Ready?" Azalea asks. We all look at each other and nod as the train begins to slow down.
Without needing to speak we file out of the compartment with our luggage into the crowded hallway. Doing our best to stay within our small group as we wove throughout the crowd of older students. I caught a few glimpses of other first years, trying not to be trampled by the stampede of older students.
A billion thoughts raced through my mind as we walked, what house would I be in? Would I be alone? What if I didn't fit in? Did the sorting hat make mistakes? It must sometimes... What if I blew up my potion?
It can't be that bad if the older students seem so happy to be back, right?
As these thoughts were running through my mind a familiar face walked up.
"Hey Wren! How's it going?" Asked Jill, one of Wrens older sisters.
"Awesome!" Exclaimed Wren happily. Jill smiled.
"Glad to hear that. I was going to help you guys find Hagrid but it seems like you know where you're going." She said with a smirk. Wren nodded and hugged her tightly.
"See you later!" And then before I knew it Jill had faded back into the crowd.
"FIRST YEARS THIS WAY! EVERY ONE OVER HERE!" A voice boomed over the crowd. Lillain shrugged and we started over to the voice.
A large man with a giant dark bread was herding the first years towards a bunch of boats gently bobbing at the edge of the water.
"First years this way! Is that all of ya? Yes? Anyone missing? Is anyone listening? No? Ok then to the boats everyone. 6 to a boat no more! I said 6!" We all clambered into a boat and before we knew it we were drifting towards a castle, Hogwarts.
