A/N: After my cruel departure, I have decided to write one last chapter. Hope you guys like it!
Dire Circumstances: 02
Fennec hadn't seen Alex ever since the mission. It had been one whole year and three whole months since Alex had been whisked away, onto a gurney, and flown to a hospital. Fennec often thought of his former friend. Did he live? Did he die on the operating table? Was he still a spy?
Fennec still couldn't believe that Alex was a spy. Had he been a spy ever since he was fourteen? Was that why he'd missed so much school? Fennec had so many questions that had been left unanswered.
He woke to the sound of the rain tapping lightly against the roof of B-Unit's cabin. He rolled over, moaning softly to himself, checking the time on his watch. 0430.
Fennec rolled back over, falling asleep again.
When he next awoke, Lion was standing above him, shaking his shoulder. His movements were stiff and restricted, due to a recent bullet to the knee. He was getting better though.
"Yeah?" Fennec asked, getting up quickly.
Lion's face didn't show any expression, but Fennec thought he could see a faint flicker of worry in the older man's eyes, "The Sergeant wants to see you."
Fennec's eyebrows shot up. What did he do this time? He dared not to voice his question. Instead, he just nodded and got dressed.
Five minutes later, Fennec was at the Sergeant's door, his fist raised, ready to knock. The door opened suddenly and Fennec, his fist descending, found himself stumbling forward and sprawling on the ground. He sprang up to attention before he, himself, could process it.
A quiet snort punctured the silence around them. Fennec wanted to look at who had snorted, but he didn't dare move a muscle.
"At ease, soldier." The Sergeant seemed amused. He sorted through a small pile of papers, humming lowly to himself, before looking back up at Fennec, "You've been selected."
Fennec was confused, "Sir?"
The Sergeant handed him a file. On the top of the manila folder, big, blocked, red lettered "TOP SECRET" was stamped. It was so secretive that Fennec wanted to bash his head against a desk.
"MI6 asked for the best unit and they picked you for your skill set." The Sergeant said gruffly.
Fennec looked down at the folder and back up to the Sergeant, "A sharpshooter, sir? Surely MI6 has their own."
Someone behind him cleared their voice. Fennec turned, eyebrows lifting as he found a familiar face, "Agent Abbot."
The man nodded, "This operation is delicate. Our sharpshooters at MI6 have all failed the mission. We decided to give it one last try."
Our sharpshooters at MI6 have all failed…
Fennec wasn't stupid. He knew what that meant. This mission was dangerous. Life threatening, even.
Fennec opened the file and felt a déjà vu moment.
Operation Cub
Target: R**** (affiliated with terrorist organization 8201)
Appearance: Classified
Location: Classified
Any more information pertaining to the mission will be given when deemed necessary.
Fennec gaped at the paper. One, thin, simple sheet of paper.
"Do you accept, soldier?" The Sergeant barked, jerking Fennec out of his stupor.
Fennec opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
The Sergeant glared and barked again, "Do you accept, soldier?"
Fennec found his voice again, "Yes, SIR!"
Dire*Circumstances
Fennec lay flat on his stomach on the roof of a building, holding his sniper's rifle. He stared through the scope, looking at the people below him. After he had accepted his mission, he had been taken to the head of MI6. Mrs. Jones had informed him that his target was "a white male, about the same age as you. This man was a former MI6 agent and you know him. Once you see him, you'll know."
Fennec hadn't seen him yet, and he certainly didn't know who he was supposed to assin- murde- no. Kill.
He glared at the carefree people through the scope, wondering how they could be so calm, so happy on this dark day.
Fennec was about to take his first life.
He breathed deeply inwards, moving the scope to a different direction of the park he was currently preying on.
Fennec's thoughts kept on straying back to a certain MI6 spy that he had encountered on his first mission. Where was he now? Was he on this mission too? Was he hunting down the target too?
Click.
Fennec tensed at the all too familiar sound of the cocking of a gun. It was directly behind him.
A cold barrel touched the back of his neck.
Fennec's heart beat erratically, racing down a track like a racehorse. He began to sweat, his palms growing slick.
"Stand up slowly and raise your arms." Weary. Broken. Why did that sound so familiar? It sure wasn't Alex. Alex would never try to kill a former friend, would he?
Fennec did what he was told, standing up straight, raising his arms, and slowly turning around.
The man before him had a ski mask on. All Fennec could see was his glinting eyes, brown and hard. But there was something off about this man. His eyes held no spark of life. His eyes were dull. Pointless.
Fennec's lips formed a word that felt all too familiar, "Alex…"
Alex's mouth curved into a bitter smile, "Fennec."
"Alex, what are you doing?" Fennec was terrified. He was terrified for his life. He was terrified for his family. He was terrified of dying alone. But most of all, he was terrified at the cold, emotionless statue in front of him.
Alex pulled off his ski mask, dumping it beside him, "Something I should have done a long time ago."
Fennec watched, terrified as Alex raised the barrel up the Fennec's forehead. It brushed against him, right in between his eyes.
He closed his eyes, ready for death.
BANG!
Fennec waited for the darkness to envelop him. He waited for the short-lived pain that was sure to come. He waited for the loneliness of death.
It didn't come.
Fennec tentatively opened his eyes, heartbeat slowing. He couldn't see Alex anymore. Was he hallucinating? Gulping, he took a step forward as if to touch the place Alex was last standing.
Squelsh.
Fennec froze. He looked down.
He had found his answers to the questions unasked.

QUICK UPDATE BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE TIME THIS MORNING: Hehe, I know it sounds like Alex killed himself, but I left it off here because I'm letting you guys think about what happened (and because I was lazy, but just pretend that I wasn't...).
Wanna tell me what you think happened?
a) Alex actually did kill himself
b) Fennec was a trap designed for Alex
c) They both didn't die and it was a random bird that got shot... and Alex ran away (What is this? So random idek)
d) I can't come up with any more reasons... What did you think?
Another reason why I left it off here was because I'm insanely curious to see what you guys thought happened. If you want, review with what you thought happened. If not, thanks anyway!
