I sat in the centre of the floor, sheets of paper arranged around me. My eyes scanned over the Enochian symbols again and again. There was a knock, and the door was slowly pushed open. I looked up to see Alex Lannen, the Chosen One, standing awkwardly at the door. "Are you looking for Michael?" I asked, "He's in a council meeting just now."
"Oh, right, uh..."
"Do you want me to tell him something?"
"Um, no - it's fine, I'll… um"
"You can wait for him if you'd like. He won't be too long."
He nodded, "That would be great, thanks."
"Take a seat" I cleared away the paper on the floor, collecting it into one pile and leaving it on the desk. I looked back at Alex, he was still standing near the door, though he had closed it now. He was tense, unsure. "Relax Alex, you're in no danger here."
His shoulders slumped slightly, he put his hands in his pockets and nodded. Leaning back against the table, close to him, he looked around the room.
"From what Michael has said, you aren't as shy as you're coming across" I said, sitting on the edge of Michael's bed.
"I guess I don't know you that much" he said. I raised my eyebrows, tilting my head as I looked at him, silently asking him to continue, "I just mean that you're always seen with Michael. but you're never on your own… to actually talk to or anything."
"I'm alone now"
He rubbed the back of his neck, "Yeah, I guess you are."
I gazed out the window. Standing up I began to walk over to the doors, "Well then Alex, what do you want to talk about?"
He followed me, "Um, well how did you meet Michael?"
I smiled, "That's a long story. Are you sure you want to hear it?"
Intrigued, he answered, "Yes"
I sat down on the edge of the step, Alex followed. I took a breath, and started, "In Heaven I was a soldier. To begin with I was a part of Lucifer's battalion. I was a good soldier, followed orders, did as I was told - but I could see him becoming mad, losing his mind. There was little I could do though, I barely had any rank, just a Lieutenant Colonel - there were too many people above me, keeping me in place. When he rebelled I ran, I tried to make it obvious that I was not part of it. It was then Gabriel found me. He made sure I was spared when the rest of Lucifer's battalion fell. He took me into his ranks, and started training with me. There was this competition, just a game really - the best warriors from each of the archangels' ranks were put forward for a friendly fight, and the winner would move forward to fight the next angel. The final fights were against the archangels themselves. Gabriel had put me forward as one of his warriors and I had worked my way through the competition until I was to fight the archangels. It was all fun and games, just exciting really. I fought and beat Gabriel, that being said I am still convinced he let me win, then I fought Michael."
"You actually fought him?"
"Yes. Neither of us were paying attention to who we were fighting, we just fought."
"What was it like?"
I laughed quietly, "It was impressive, he was very impressive. It was a fair fight, we were pretty equally matched, but eventually Michael won. He had knocked me to the ground so he helped me up and, well, that was that. We realised and I was transferred to Michael's battalion."
"How did- how did you know? That you and Michael are...?"
"Soul mates?"
"Yeah, that"
"You think that it's nonsense, don't you?" I said, a hint of a smile growing on my lips, "You're not the only one - most humans can't wrap their heads around it. There is an unmistakable feeling when an angel finds their soul mate. It feels like there's a rope around your heart, pulling you toward the other. Like your heart is being squeezed and there's nothing else in the world but them. It's... uncomfortable, but... I was happy, and so was Michael."
"Michael? Happy?"
"Yes, it is possible" We laughed.
"Having fun?" I turned to see Michael, looking down at me, a smile playing on his lips.
I stood, "I was just telling Alex about how we met"
"And that's funny?"
"A little"
Michael took my hand and kissed it gently, "I have to speak with you" he said quietly before turning to Alex, "Where you looking for me?"
