Chapter 1 Bonds
Neither one of them moved, just staring at each other, calculating every move, every twitch of their fingers, every muscle constricting together. Not even the slightest of movement went by unnoticed.
It seemed like hours while they just stood there, but it couldn't have been more than a couple of minutes. Anyone walking into the shop at this moment would be utterly confused at what was going on and what these two peculiar boys were doing. After all, it takes a brilliant mind to understand a brilliant mind. What are they doing? You may wonder. Well, Determining who was the dominant one, of course.
There could only be one winner.
A minute ticked by, neither of them breaking the eye-contact from the other.
Sapphire shone with amusement and fascination whilst annoyance, determination and mild respect swirled in narrowed slate.
"Alright, 13 ½ inches, yew, phoenix feather core, maybe we have…" A man coming from the back of the shop walked up to the counter, a box in his hand. The man stopped talking once he looked up, seeing the two boys having a stare-down. "Ah… am I interrupting something?" his pale eyes looked at them questioningly, slight amusement twinkling in his pale eyes.
Broken from their own little world, the two of them looked at the man once they heard him speak.
Slowly they shook their heads, eyeing each other cautiously.
Ollivander just smiled at them. "I haven't had the pleasure to meet you young man," He stuck his hand out at the blond who stood silently, observing him. "My name is Garrick Ollivander, wandmaker and owner of this shop."
Naruto eyed him for a second more before taking his hand and slightly shaking it, "Naruto Uzumaki, pleasure." Trying to sound as polite as possible, Naruto offered a small, closed-eye smile to the man.
Ollivanders eyes widened for a fraction of a second, looking at Naruto more closely. Nodding his head, Ollivander turned back to the brown-haired boy, still sending a look of curiosity Naruto's way when his eyes drifted towards the blond, and took a wand out of the box he had been carrying. "As I was saying, 13 ½ inches made of yew with a phoenix feather core. Hopefully this one will do the trick."
As Naruto finally decided to have a good look around the shop, he saw the small stack of boxes laying on the counter. 'Probably the wands that boy tried earlier,' Naruto mused. Eyeing them for a second before his gaze moved on to the rest of the shop.
Shelves lined the narrow shop, going way into the back. Thousands of wand-boxes lined up on each other, reaching the ceiling. A thin layer of dust seemed to cover about almost anything. Naruto scrunched his nose up in disgust. He didn't like this place one bit.
It was only when a sudden wind picked up did Naruto stop his scrutinizing and look at the source of the sudden, mysterious breeze. It was the brown-haired boy, holding the wand in his right hand, crackling with energy. Curly brown locks swapped from side to side as the shop filled with power before it was gone again.
The boy looked wide-eyed at the wand in his hand, amazement clearly shining in the slate eyes. Naruto could only wonder at how that would've felt like.
Ollivander nodded his head, mumbling something to himself which a normal person would never be able to hear. Unluckily for him, Naruto was not your average person.
"One of the twins, Yew though, symbolizes death. How curious…"
Naruto didn't know what he meant, but he didn't really care at the moment. It wasn't like it mattered to him anyway.
"It seems the wand has chosen you to be its master Mr. Riddle," Ollivander said, looking at 'Riddle' with a slight smile. Though, it looked slightly strained. "Take good care of it."
Riddle only nodded as he paid Ollivander for his wand and left for the exit. Though, he paused just before the door, looking back at Naruto. One side of Naruto's lips twitched up in a half smirk, half grin. It looked pretty intimidating with one of his canines slightly showing. Riddle turned to leave, but Naruto caught the hint of a smirk just before the boy walked out the door.
How interesting.
"Now, let's search for a fitting wand for you, no?" Ollivander was gone before Naruto could even give so much as a response, so he opted to just stand at the counter, waiting for the wandmaker to return.
It was only half a minute later Ollivander came back with a new-looking box clutched in his hands.
"Try this one," Taking out the wand, Ollivander held it out for Naruto to take. Not a second after his finger touched the wand, did a window crack and were shards of glass flying around.
"No, no, that just won't do." Stuffing the wand back in the box, Ollivander went back to the shelves and took a random box out. Handing the wand to Naruto, Ollivander watched as a nearby lamp cracked and fell down from the ceiling, only five feet from where he stood. Shaking his head, Ollivander snatched the wand back before, once again, searching for a new one.
It went on like that for a while, one wand after the other was brought up to Naruto, only to be taken back. Some didn't do anything while others created a lot of damage. And with a lot, I mean a lot.
All the windows either cracked, or just totally shattered. Stacks of wand boxes were strewn all over the floor, lamps were broken and the walls and floor have several big cracks in them.
Ollivander added the latest wand to the fast growing hill laying next to the counter.
"Hmm… You're the toughest client yet. Maybe.." Ollivander went to the back again, disappearing behind the back door. This time he stayed away for a good five minutes before he finally came back to the front of the shop. Clutched in his hands is probably one of the most old looking boxes Naruto has seen that day, and he had seen a lot. The probably once white color has turned yellow with age, a thick layer of dust covering the top. Blowing the cover, dust flying in Naruto's face who glared daggers at the man, Ollivander carefully took the wand out, as if it would blow up any minute. Well, maybe Naruto hoped it would do that…
The wood of the wand was of a dark color, almost black. Ollivander handed the wand to Naruto, silently watching, anticipating. Naruto raised an eyebrow at the peculiar behavior of the man but shrugged it off and slowly took a hold of the wand.
What happened after was almost instantaneous.
The wind started to pick up, howling through the shop. The flames from the candles exploded in a giant fire and the most peculiar thing were the shadows. They seem to have come to life, dancing around the blond, almost as if he were their master.
Ollivander staggered back at the sheer magical power coming from the blond, it was almost intoxicating. After a couple of seconds it all died down again.
Naruto looked at the wand in his hand, now understanding why Riddle looked so awe-struck. It was amazing. That feeling. The feeling of utter power coursing through his veins upon touching that wand. He felt untouchable. Like he held the whole world in the palms of his hand. Power in its purest form.
He loved it.
Blinking the haze away from his eyes, Naruto looked at the man standing behind the counter. Ollivander had both eyebrows raised, almost reaching his hair-line. His pale eyes were wide, almost like plates. His jaw could've just as well been laying on the ground. Which was gross since the floor was covered in dust and who knows what else.
Composing himself, Ollivander coughed a little before starting to speak, "Hmm.. It seems that wand has chosen you, Mr. Uzumaki. Very curious indeed.."
Naruto looked back down at his wand, twisting it around in his hand. The balance was very good and it was very light. After trying a couple of different grips, Naruto looked back up at ollivander, seeing the man watching him very closely.
"11 ½ inches made from Ivy with a dual core," Ollivander looked very serious right now, "Thestral tail hair and the hair of a tail from a nine-tailed fox."
Naruto's eyebrows rose at that. That, wasn't something he expected. Not at all.
"It isn't often that a wand has two cores, and certainly not two of such rarity. The nine-tailed fox hair was plucked long ago by my ancestors when they were in a Nation far from here, it was a demon, the strongest of its kind. It was by sheer luck that my ancestor stumbled upon it while it was sleeping. Once here in England again, my ancestor met a very curious Thestral, which by my guess could smell the power and destruction coming from that one hair. It gave a hair of its own, making so that the core of that wand would get two cores.
"It was also the first and last time anyone in the Ollivander family made a wand of ivy, or a wand with two cores for that matter. Very curious, very curious." Ollivander looked Naruto in the eye, a slight cautious look in them. "I expect great things from you, Mr. Uzumaki. Great things.."
Naruto just nodded his head, the only outward indication of his surprise are his raised eyebrows and the slight widening of his eyes. Inside though, his thoughts were running a mile a minute. It was starting to give him a slight headache, damnit.
After paying about seven galleons, Naruto walked out of the destructed shop without an ounce of guilt for having destroyed the wandmakers property. He couldn't care less, actually.
Looking at the list of things needed, Naruto saw he had most of the things already. Having it all stored in storage scrolls which is then stored in another storage scroll hidden under his black cloak.
He only needed one more thing, an animal.
In the letter he got from the old man Dippet, it said you could bring either an owl or a cat or a toad. Snorting Naruto raised an eyebrow at that.
Like he'd listen to that, if he wants to bring whatever animal he wants, then he shall do so.
Looking down the many shops, he saw an owlery but decided that wasn't something he wanted. Heading further down the alley, he finally came across a pet shop.
Magical Menagerie
He decided to just take a look.
The shop was very cramped and noisy, the sounds of different animals screeching through each other. The walls were covered by cages, each containing a different kind of animal. Orange snails (which looked poisonous), a tortoise encrusted with jewels, black rats, owls and cats of every color.
Naruto looked around with interest but nothing really caught his eye.
Walking past the counter to the more darker part of the shop. It wasn't really dark of the evil kind, really. It was just dark since there seemed to be no light to illuminate it. Luckily for Naruto, his eye-sight was far better than the average human.
There was nothing any different than all the other animals he just came by, he was about to turn back and leave the shop when a slight movement from the most far back cage caught his eye. Walking towards it, Naruto knelt to be at eyelevel and peered inside. It was a fox, it's fur a pure white like freshly fallen snow with one streak of pitch black in the middle of her forehead. It was small, probably because it's still just a kit. It couldn't have been more than a few months old.
Blinking it's eyes open, the fox-kit looked up at Naruto with wide eyes which seemed to glow a brilliant blue. Naruto gave it a soft smile, slowly extending his hand and letting the kit smell it. Cautiously, the little fox brought it's snout up to the hand and took a little sniff. The next instant it was walking up to Naruto, looking up at him with wide, hopeful eyes.
"Are you our king?"
"Hm?" Naruto raised an eyebrow at the little fox, blinking slowly.
"My mom told me stories about the great king of the foxes. She said that if you meet him, you'll instantly know it's our king. That was before they killed her and took me away." She lowered her head, ears drooping down slightly. Yes, it's a she. Naruto silently laid his hand on top of her head and slowly threaded his fingers up and down her scalp in a soothing message.
"Do you have a name, little one?" Seeing her relax in his attempt at comforting her, he wasn't used to that kind of thing.
"No, I don't have one."
"Hm.. well that ought to change, don't it? How would you like to stay with me kit?" Seeing her ears perk up and her fluffy tail swishing from side to side in an excited manner, Naruto was oddly satisfied to have made the depressed fox kit happy again.
"Alright, I'll be right back then.." Walking back to the counter from before, Naruto walked up to the clerk and after a couple of minutes both Naruto and the little Yuki, which Naruto decided to name her, stood outside of the shop.
Naruto took the list out of a pocket in his cloak, being careful not to knock Yuki from his shoulders as that's the place she decided that she wanted to lay on. She wasn't very heavy, or big for that matter. The size of a cat. She had told him she would probably grow as big as her mother was, which was pretty large. But that would take a long time before she reached that height.
Reading the list over again, Naruto checked what he already had and if he still needed to buy some stuff.
Uniform
Three sets op plain work robes (black) –check, even made from the lightest material available so his movements wouldn't be too heavily constricted.
One plain pointed hat (black) for day wear –check, though it's probably not like he's going to really wear that one.
One pair of protective gloves (dragon hide or similar) –check, but he also had his ninja gloves so that wasn't really needed.
One winter cloak (black, with silver fastenings) –check.
He went over the list of needed books for first years, but also had some (more like a lot) of extra books which looked fairly interesting. Some books about the mannerisms of wizards, a book about the history of Hogwarts (which could be pretty handy), some books about runes more books for spells, a couple of books about magical creatures and he even found a few books about the Dark Arts. He would read them all later.
Other equipment
1 wand
1 cauldron (pewter, standard size 2)
1 set glass or crystal phials
1 telescope
1 set brass scales
He had all that, the only thing that could probably come in handy is a bird. He has to sent letters and reports to his Hokage, and that's probably the only way he could do it without having to go back to Konoha himself.
Well, he could do that later. Naruto decided to just head to the address he got from professor Dippet and call it a day. It was already late, the sun starting to set. Tomorrow would be September 1st , the day the new school term began. Naruto couldn't wait to learn all there was about magic, leaving him with a slightly jittery feeling. He felt like skipping. Skipping! Wchich was just absurd in itself. He never skipped, not once in his life. And he won't start doing that now.
Once arriving at the shaggy looking building where he would reside for the night, Naruto got his room key and ate something together with Yuki before taking a book out of his small stock.
Time to read Hogwarts a History, Can't really arrive there unprepared, now could he?
It was a few hours later and Naruto had read through the book like it was nothing, now he was reading up on the political ongoings in the wizarding world and what their mannerisms were. The sun had already set and Yuki lay sleeping on the second head pillow of his four-poster bed while his was propped up on the headboard, leaning his back against it in a relaxed manner. Heaving a giant sigh, Naruto rubbed his eyes and closed the book with a soft thud. It was a long day, and tomorrow he would have to board the train heading towards Hogwarts. Leaning down, he closed his eyes falling into a dreamless sleep.
It was chaos in King's cross station of London. Naruto looked at all the people hurrying around, trying to catch their trains on time. Yuki was hidden inside his cloak, away from the eyes of the people going around. He looked up at a clock hanging overhead, 10:43. He has 17 minutes before the train left the station. Now, though. He has to get to platform 9 ¾.
Which didn't seem to exist.
Standing between the platforms of 9 and 10, Naruto looked around for a sign that would say 9 ¾ Here! Well, he could always hope. Containing a frustrated sigh of annoyance, he decided to clear his mind and just observe.
A man in a business suit ran in front of him, stepping on the train on platform 10. A weeping woman waved her lover away with a handkerchief, bawling her eyes out. How disgustingly sweet. A young boy stood at the corner of the entrance, waving a newspaper around while yelling something. A couple of parents walking through the wall between platform 9 and ten. A machi… wait a second.
Naruto did a double take and came to the conclusion he wasn't hallucinating. People were conspicuously going through a wall. Naruto grinned slightly, it seemed he has found his entrance to platform 9 ¾.
Walking up to the wall, he glanced around and seeing no one looking at him he walked right trough the stone wall. Upon walking out of the concealed entrance, he was met with a big scarlet train where steam was coming from.
Hogwarts Express was engraved with golden letterings in the side of the engine.
A whistle went off, announcing that the train would leave in five minutes. Taking his time, Naruto slowly walked towards the train. Looking around at all the different people on the platform. Parents were waving at their children who stood at the windows, families hugging each other goodbye, some children, noticeably first years, were even crying. Weak.
Stepping inside, Naruto decided to head to the back of the train where it was, hopefully, quiet and deserted.
Unfortunately, that was not the case. Most cabins were full, filled with bustling chatter and overly excited children. The cabins where it was the most calm were the ones where the older students sat at, but even that was sometimes questionable.
After searching for what felt like half the train he finally came across a quiet cabin. Shoving the door open, he was surprised someone already beat him to it. It was that boy from yesterday… What was his name again? Ah, yes. Riddle.
Contemplating on his choices, sharing a quiet cabin with Riddle, or sitting in a cabin which was overfull with excited, jumpy children. The answer was pretty obvious.
"May I sit here? All the other cabins are full." Slate eyes looked at him, never once leaving his form from the moment he opened the door. Naruto gave a shy smile, hoping the boy would would say yes. Well, it didn't really matter actually. He would sit down regardless if the answer is no or not.
Getting a nod after a couple of seconds, Naruto smiled a slightly bigger smile, flashing his canines he plopped down on the empty seat across from Riddle.
Extending a hand to the other, Naruto gave a big grin. "Names Naruto. Naruto Uzumaki."
Cold, slate eyes regarded the tan hand offered to him, before looking back up at the blond, still grinning from ear to ear. Tom knew the blond was putting up a mask. After the happenings of yesterday it couldn't be otherwise. Though, if he hadn't met the blond before without his mask on, he would've been fooled that the kid was an idiot. It was just that good. Also considering he, himself, was a master at manipulating and fooling people, if he does say so himself.
So after considering all that, he took the hand in his own, eyes widening slightly at the shocks racking up his arm through his body before shaking it lightly. That was a first, he never felt that when taking someone's hand.
"Tom Riddle."
It was the start of a very, very strange friendship.
Tom wasn't the only one to have felt those shocks, Naruto raised his eyebrow slightly. Shrugging it off as just static electricity he smiled one last time before sitting back in his seat and looking outside the window.
The final whistle blew and the students who were still running on the platform quickly jumped on. It was silent for a while, the only sound heard were the train riding on the rails and the distant chatter of the other students. That was until someone decided to open their door and ruin his peace.
Hiding his annoyance behind a smile, Naruto looked at the person who dared interrupt his quiet time.
A pale-blond boy stood at the entrance, a scowl edged onto his face. Naruto got the distinct feeling he had met him somewhere…
"Can I sit here? This is the only quiet cabin in the whole train, after all." Superior attitude, Arrogance lacing his tone. Ah, now he remembered.
Looking at Tom, he saw him raising an unimpressed eyebrow at the pale-blonds entrance. Containing a snicker, Naruto stayed silent. Opting to just watch the proceedings happening than to participate. Tom also seemed to notice that the blond decided to stay silent and sent a glare his way for just a fraction for a second before settling his gaze back onto the pale-blond, who deemed the silence as a yes and sat himself down next to Tom. If looks could kill, the kid would be already ten feet underground.
Oh, this would be fun.
And that's a wrap!
What did you guys think? was it good? bad? down-right awful? Please, let me know what your opinion is.
About Naruto's wand; You guys might be wondering why i would use ivy as wood, well there are reasons behind that.
ivy stands for growth, renewal, connection, friendship and opportunity. It's also a symbol of survival and determination and is virtually indestructable. It has all to do with Naruto and how he will grow in this story, also it is the wood for his birthday september 30 - october 28 in the celtic calandar, which is also quite convenient.
If you have any questions, you can always ask them.
