Kiss Me in the Rain
Today was a good day. Well, better than most days. Most days sucked lately. Like, really sucked. Like sucked bad. Ever since Jessica fired her, Donna had been next to miserable. But she'd be damned if she'd let it get her down – which it did. She's Donna for god's sake! And she was moving on with her life like the fiery goddess she is!
Step one: have a delicious morning coffee. CHECK.
Step two: audition for a big role in an upcoming play. CHECK.
Step three: have an amazing pilates workout. CHECK.
Step four: don't let your already gross hair get even grosser in the rain. Working on it...
She tugged her red jacket tighter around her, shivering as the cold rain pelted down against her still heated body. She muttered to herself, mostly jibberish, as she put up the reliable yellow umbrella she'd had since she worked at the DA's office. Well... it had been reliable until now! The wind – there had barely been any wind all day, why now? – had blown it inside out and managed to snap two of the wires. Just great. That's what she needed...
"God damn it." She cursed, trying to pull the old thing together but giving up. As she threw it into a nearby trashcan, she was suddenly made aware of how not being rained on she had become. Confused, she turned around. "Oh." She said, and whether it was from the shock or the unappreciative way her brain took in the situation, she did not know. "Go away, Harvey." She called over her shoulder, strutting away from him.
"Donna, wait," he took her arm, forcing her to face him. "Can we talk?"
"You've had weeks to try to talk to me, Harvey. What do you want?" She couldn't help it if she sounded angry. She was angry. Really angry. She knew it was her fault, but after all they'd gone through, she'd really just hoped for more.
"I'm sorry," he said lamely, pulling her around again when she tried to make yet another escape.
"Sorry for what, Harvey?" She demanded, exasperated. "For not calling?"
"I did call."
"No, your new assistant did. How is he by the way? Working out for you?" She knew it was petty to be jealous about the new secretary; that didn't make her not feel it though...
"No, I fired him."
"What? Why?"
"I want you back, Donna."
She seemed to consider for a second, before turning on her heel with a quick, "No."
"Donna!" He tried to pull her back again, but she shook him off.
"Goodbye, Harvey!" She said over the sound of rain and cars and New York City. The annoyance followed her though, and suddenly the rain stopped again. It was becoming harder to ignore the hurt she felt at his presence. Why couldn't he just leave her alone?
"Donna, I need you."
She laughed, bitter. "Yeah, clearly." She'd meant it to sound more sarcastic than it did.
"Yes, clearly." He confirmed, wrapping an arm around her waist to stop her once more. "I've been miserable without you, Donna, I can't think straight." She didn't try to walk away this time; she was too stunned by the confession. Harvey didn't do talks like this. "I need you, and I want you back." He said with as much conviction as he could muster.
"Why?"
"Because I-"
She watched him fight to say the words, biting his lip and staring to the side as if willing the words to just magically make themselves heard. "Because you..?"
"Please," he said, quieter now. The fight gone from his eyes.
She nodded and turned away, walking off again.
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "At least take this," he muttered, catching up with her easily and handing her the umbrella. She eyed it suspiciously. "What?"
"You'll ruin your hair."
He rolled his eyes, and before he could let himself think, he acted; taking her face in his hands and pulling her towards him. The kiss was chaste. Quick and soft. But it said everything she needed to hear.
"Come back."
She smirked then, turning to fully face him. "You know I don't sleep with people from work."
"Well good thing I haven't hired you back yet." He smiled, kissing her again.
