Disclaimer: I do not own Teen Wolf.

A/N: I recognize this is short, and I apologize. I just couldn't find a story for this chapter, but I had reasons for writing it. Translations at the end.

The backyard of the house was mostly overgrown, although Laura had promised someone would be out the next day to finish the landscaping and clean the pool. Derek kind of liked the overgrown garden and the large expanse of grass past the patio looked promising. He pushed open the rusty gate into the large lawn and looked around curiously. It wasn't his backyard, more forest than yard, but it was large and mostly flat, and perfect for running around.

Cora would have…

Derek drove his claws into his palm to stop the thought. He didn't want to think about that. He didn't want to remember anything.

Instead, Derek walked out into the middle of the lawn and looked around. It was actually pretty boring, just a clear, grassy space surrounded by a wooden fence. He wandered over towards one of the fences, intrigued by the rapidly beating heart and soft thumps. Then he caught himself and turned away from the fence, he didn't want to meet anybody.

Another thump made him hesitate for a moment too long.

Something crashed into the back of his head, hard enough to make his head throb and for him to hit his knees.

Derek saw red for a moment, then he closed his eyes and shook his head, once, twice, and he was seeing normally. A soccer ball was lying halfway across the lawn.

"Sind Sie in Ordnung?"

Derek spun to find a boy, a teenager about his own age, peering over the fence. A couple of wayward, dark brown curls fell down into his eyes as he stared at Derek.

"What?" Derek demanded, making himself calm down. He didn't think a kid with a baby face and messy curls was a threat. He hadn't thought that a pretty blonde was… Derek jammed his claws in his palms again to cut off that thought harshly.

"Sind sie, scheisse are you… okay?" The teenager said, frowning.

"Yeah," Derek said, he pointed at the ball, "is that yours?"

"Ja," the boy nodded.

Derek got up and grabbed the ball, "How hard did you kick it?"

"Ich weiss es nicht," the boy shrugged.

Derek blinked, because he knew that phrase, "Du spreche Deutsch?"

"Ja, und du?"

Derek frowned again, running through what he knew, "Ich habe in der Schule gelernt. Ich bin nicht gut darin."

The boy laughed, "Ich heisse Michael." He held out his hand.

"Derek," Derek replied, putting the ball in the boy's hand.

Michael frowned for a moment before dropping the ball over his shoulder. "Do you play football?" He asked slowly.

"Baseball," Derek said, wondering how to get himself out of this conversation.

"Derek!" Derek had never been happier to see his sister come through the gate. From the look of concern, Derek thought she must have heard his heartbeat speed up earlier. "Are you okay?" She asked as she got closer, taking in the scene.

"Fine," Derek said. He glanced at the kid, "Michael, meine Schwester, Laura. Laura this is Mik."

"Nice to meet you," Laura said politely. "Derek, we need to get going."

Derek glanced at her for a long moment, "Shopping," Laura said.

Derek rolled his eyes and glanced back up at Michael, "Auf Wiedersehen."

"Auf Wiedersehen," Mik said and vanished behind the fence.

"Well," Laura said, slinging her arm over Derek's shoulders, "at least you can practice your German, right?"

Derek shrugged his shoulders out from under Laura's arm and headed back to the house.

The noise the landscapers made drove Derek out of the house by midmorning. For a long moment, he stood on the sidewalk, trying to decide which way to walk.

"Hallo! Derek!"

Derek turned to find Michael trotting down the sidewalk. "Michael," Derek said when the other boy came to a stop.

"Wie gehts?" Michael asked.

"Gut," Derek replied shortly.

Michael grinned at him, "I go to the…" he hesitated a moment. "Die Bibliothek, uh, the…"

"Library?" Derek asked.

"Ja," Michael said.

Derek considered for a moment, then someone started up a lawn mower and he winced slightly. "Do you mind showing me where that is?" He asked.

Michael frowned, mouthing the words for a moment, and then he grinned, "Ja, klar!" He waved, "I show you."

Derek glanced up at the house, but with Laura at some meeting at the university, he figured it would be okay. Besides, she'd told him to explore the neighborhood instead of just being coped up inside. Then he turned and hurried to fall in step with Michael. After a moment, Derek looked at Michael, who was staring down at the sidewalk. When Michael started to look at him, Derek stared at the sidewalk.

They walked down the street, two strangers on a mission, linked by their mutual desire to find a library.

Derek blinked; he really needed to stop listening into Laura's movies. It was starting make him think like them.

"The library is nice," Michael said after a moment, carefully. "I meet a… Lehrerin…"

"Teacher?" Derek offered after Michael was quiet for a while.

"Ja," Michael said. "She helps my English."

Derek nodded.

The library proved to be a large, white stone building. Before they went in, Michael caught Derek's arm, "You don't say much," he said with a slight grin, "I like that."

Derek frowned as he watched Michael vanish into the building.
