Nina POV:
For once, everything was quiet at dinner. No one spoke and no one, not even Jerome and Alfie, to fling the food.
Sighing, I put my fork down and looked at the rest of the table.
"You guys can talk you know. Just because I'm… different doesn't mean you guys can't talk or you should be scared, y'know," I said.
Everyone tensed and mumbled an apology.
"Why are you so different, Nina?" Amber asked, also putting her fork down. "We don't see you in a couple of months and you come back with completely new eyes and a new attitude."
Before I could stop myself, my head jerked to her. I felt bad as I saw her flinch under my, apparently, unfriendly gaze.
"You say 'new eyes' like I bought them from a store and replaced my old ones," I said, not once breaking eye contact with her. "I'm the same as I was before I went back to America, Ambs."
Amber opened her mouth to argue, but I could see the fear in her eyes and she shut her mouth again. She simply nodded and continued to pick at her spaghetti.
Just as everything went back to complete silence, my phone buzzed. Excusing myself from the table, I walked toward the couch and checked the message.
Meet me in the woods. Midnight.
I groaned he couldn't seriously be asking me to meet him tonight. I have school tomorrow. But more than that, there's no doubt that someone would try to would hear me go outside.
Choice or no choice?
I held my breath, waiting for the reply. I could feel the stares of the Anubis residents drill into my back.
None
I sighed. Great, I thought. Just great.
I walked back to the table and set my phone down.
"So… Nina," Amber said awkwardly. I looked up and tried not to look threatening. I don't really know if it worked or not. "How's America?"
"Fine," I replied shortly.
"Okay… why didn't you call any of us over break?" she asked,
I shrugged. "I had a lot going on. Gran was ill and I had some… distant relatives I didn't even know existed until a few months ago came over for the entire summer."
After that, everyone went back to their food, the attempts of trying make conversation with me coming to a halt.
I didn't complain this time.

"Nina," Eddie said as I was going back upstairs. "Who's Carter?"
I froze, one foot on one step and my other foot on another step. "Why do you ask?" I asked, trying to keep my voice even.
"Before you got up to answer the text, I saw the name of who you were responding to. It was Carter. Is it one of those 'distant relatives', because I don't ever remember you telling me about a Carter and I know for a fact that there's no one in our neighborhood with that name."
I stared at him for a long moment. "Listen here Eddie. Who Carter is doesn't concern you at all. It's my phone, my friend, and my life, so do me a favor and stay out of it" I snapped before continuing up the stairs.
I knew he was still down there, trying to form a sentence, an argument, something to get me to stay, but if he did find one, he didn't find it in time to stop me from locking the door to the attic.

I stared up at the ceiling, moonlight coming through in different shades of light through the setting sun in the window. I grabbed my phone for the millionth tome since lights out. 11:50.
I decided that was a good enough time to begin to head out into the woods. Crossing the room slowly as to not make too much noise, I grabbed a hoodie and pulled it on. I quickly slipped on my Converse and slipped my phone into my pocket.
Removing the window carefully, the silver light and warm drifted into the room. I took a minute to reward myself for thinking this far ahead. It would've taken much more time to try and pry the window off without it being loose first.
Taking a breath, I jumped.

Amber POV:
I slowly crept down the stairs, making sure to avoid the ones I knew creaked. I was just getting some water, but I didn't want to have to face the wrath of Victor and his admittedly well-groomed facial hair.
I tiptoed past the front door and into the kitchen. After making sure there was absolutely no trace I \had ever been in there, I slowly made my way back into the hall.
THUMP! I jumped, immediately backing up towards the room under the stairs. I looked up, but Victor was not coming down from his office. That's when I realized that the sound had come from directly in front of me. Waving my hand to make sure there were no ghosts, I walked forward slowly. I crept to the door, opening it slowly. After seeing nothing in the hall, I walked to the second set of doors. I opened the door, wincing as the creaking echoed through the front hall. I poked my head out. Nothing
"Amber, what are you doing?" a voice hissed.
I jumped, then relaxed, knowing it was Fabian. "I thought I heard a noise."
Fabian nodded. "Me too. I was having trouble falling asleep. I kept thinking about Nina," he admitted.
After one last look, I closed the door and we stepped inside, going our separate ways.
The sound was nothing. It was probably just something random falling. Or, that's what I told myself anyway.

Nina POV:
I sighed as I saw Amber and Fabian go back inside. It was too close a call.
You have to work on your stealth, Nina, a voice inside my head scolded. What if you hadn't heard them coming outside?
I groaned and jumped off roof, cautious not to make a sound this time. Listening to make sure no one was coming, I ran into the woods, not looking back.

I don't know if the attic is anywhere near the front door (probably not), but I just needed that scene to happen for a little bit of dramatic effect. Who do you think Carter is, and why is Nina meeting him in the woods? Is there something that poor Fabian has no idea about, or is it more than that? Please R&R!
