Form the day he was born, Macavity had never been one for traditions.

For example: when a kitten is born, it is tradition to name it within a week of its birth. Macavity however, was not named till he was nearly two months old, and that was only because his mother was tired of his older brother calling him 'Fluff-butt'.

It is tradition for kittens to go to school when they are one year old. Macavity, he was thought so useless he was only sent to school for a few weeks, after his third birthday.

Another tradition is that on a kit's fifth birthday, they go to their first Jellicle Ball. Poor Macavity? He went to his first Ball in his seventh year, and only because he snuck out.

The last, and most important of the Jellicle traditions that Macavity broke, was the magic test.

In the Jellicle tribe magical cats are seen as the darkest of evil. They only kept the psychics, Coricopat and Tantomile, to help them rat out other magics. On a kitten's eighth birthday, on the eve of the Jellicle Ball, they were taken to the psychic twins for a magic examination.

Macavity, because he had never shown any prior talent in anything, was never given the examination.

At least - not until it was too late.

This was the biggest mistake the Jellicles ever made.
