Author's Note: I thought Sai would notice something like this.
Disclaimer: I don't own Naruto.
Sai has quickly learned who smiles genuinely and whose smiles are false.
And he's noticed something very interesting.
For the most part, Naruto doesn't smile like a real person. His wide mouth splits to reveal unnaturally large, sharp canines and his cheeks go red with what seems to be mirth, but it's not a real smile. Sai can see no real joy in his eyes most of the time and instead those blue seas are just flat glass. There's something there that Sai can't identify, and it instinctively makes him wary and he has to fight back the urge to reach for his tanto. On the rare occasion that Naruto does smile genuinely, Sai is struck by the brilliance of his teeth and the sparkle in his eyes.
Sakura doesn't smile genuinely much more than Naruto. Instead of some unidentifiable emotion hiding beneath her green eyes as there is beneath Naruto's blue ones, there are instead lies in her fake smiles and her falsely twinkling eyes. Sai can't quite tell why Sakura almost always lies, but he knows it can't be for anything good.
Kakashi-senpai… He never smiles. Everybody thinks he's always smiling, but Sai knows the truth. Smiles are a mask for him as much as black cloth and only Sai can tell.
He leans back against the wall and frowns.
They say my smiles are false, and perhaps they are…
But theirs are just as false as mine.
Odd.
