Chapter Two: Scary Movies
Bofur was put in charge of a now seven year old Lia while Kili and Tauriel went out. Thorin and the rest of the company had some business to tend to. When Thorin and Fili came home, he found them curled up on the sofa watching The Conjuring. It's nearly midnight and Lia is still awake with her eyes as wide as saucers and mouth open as the mother is exorcized.
"What in Durin's name are you letting her watch?" Thorin exclaimed.
"It's just a movie." Bofur replied with a playful look on his face.
"She's seven years old, Bofur. She'll have nightmares for all eternity." He said.
"Nah. She's a tough kid." Bofur said in their defense.
"Hmmmph!" He scoffed. "Time for bed, Princess." He said.
"I'm sorry, Uncle Thorin. I was in bed, but I woke up and came down for a drink of water. I wanted to see what he was watching." She said.
"You don't have to be sorry, little one, but I think that movie is too scary for you. I don't want you to have bad dreams." He said as he picked her up and gave her a hug. He put her down. "Now run along. I'll be up in a few minutes to tuck you in." He said as he kissed her forehead.
"Ok, Good night, Uncle Thorin. Good night, Bofur." She said as she headed upstairs.
"Good night, Kiddo." Bofur said.
A few minutes after Bofur left, Thorin was at Lia's bedside. She had a questioning look on her face.
"What's on your mind, Baby?" Thorin asked.
"Uncle Thorin, can things like that really happen to people?" She asked.
"I have seen a lot of evil things that I cannot explain. It is said that movie is based on a true story. That is why I didn't want you to watch it. I just didn't want you to be scared." He said.
"Oh." She said and frowned.
"Look what I found." He said as he pulled an old teddy bear from behind his back. He continued. "This was your daddy's teddy bear when he was about your age. I have kept it all this time. I am sure he won't mind passing it down to you."
"I love it!" She exclaimed. "Thank you!"
"You're welcome. Now lay your head down, little one and try to go to sleep. I will sing you a song." He said.
Kili and Tauriel came upstairs when Thorin was in the middle of singing 'Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold'.
She was about to doze off when she saw them coming down the hall. "Hi, Daddy. Hi, Mommy." She said as she sat back up.
Thorin stopped singing and shot them an annoyed look. Kili winced. "Sorry, Uncle Thorin." He said. "Princess, why are you still awake?" He said, looking at his bright-eyed child.
"I got up for a drink of water earlier and wanted to watch Bofur's movie." She said.
"Is that so? What movie was he watching?" He asked.
"The Condor…The Codger…" She said, thinking for a minute.
"The Conjuring." Thorin corrected her.
"Oh no! Bofur, that does not surprise me, but he needs to know that she is just a little girl." He said.
"I already told him." Thorin said.
"Good. Do you want us to take over?" Kili asked.
"No. I've got it under control. Get some sleep." He said.
"Ok. Good night, Uncle." He said.
"Good night." He said
Tauriel looked at their daughter. "Lia, go to sleep for Uncle Thorin and don't give him any more trouble."
"Ok, Mama." She said as they both knelt down to kiss her forehead.
Thorin started singing again, stroking her head as she fell asleep. "Good night, little princess." He said before he kissed her forehead and went to bed.
