"Then let me ask you something. Have you ever fallen in love before?"
Squall's reaction to this question was very hard to explain. He blushed at first, then figured that Lightning must be joking. He looked her in the eyes but he saw that her expression was very serious and realized she was expecting an answer. Squall sat quietly for a few seconds, trying to think of a way to get out of the situation but, unfortunately, couldn't really come up with anything.
"Wh-why do you ask?" He said, feeling his heart beating more frequently by the second.
"I don't know, just curious I guess. So have you?" She replied, still waiting for his answer, her face beginning to look quite stern.
Squall had no idea what to answer. If he had fallen in love, he surely doesn't remember, but that wasnt the point right now. He had just found out he was falling for Lightning and now she had to ask him this exact question. Life would be so much easier if he had stayed alone in the first place.
Now he had two options, to tell her the truth or to just lie through his teeth and say he doesn't like absolutely anyone, possibly offending her as well. This time, however, he decided not to chicken out and just go right ahead.
"...Well, I don't remember if I've been in love before, but, uh, I think I am in love right now." He said, barely managing to keep himself from stuttering.
"Oh? Who is it? You know you can tell me. I won't tell anyone." Lightning replied calmly, trying not to pressure him.
This was it, the moment of truth, and he was just about to say it, he was going to admit his feelings to her without a second thought. He took a deep breath and tried to take his mind off her sparkling blue eyes but with no avail, so he just closed his eyes and said it.
"I-I love..."
But at the last moment, the second thought came. Anxiety struck him, he couldn't just tell Lightning he liked her, that would ruin everything, what if she didn't accept him or, even worse, she wanted to avoid him after this? He had to think fast, think fast...
"...Bartz."
He facepalmed as Lightning just stared at him, not saying a word.
At that moment he heard a sound coming from behind the bushes around the lake, and to his misfortune it was none other than Zidane, Bartz and Tidus', who were just searching for him because the Warrior of Light had called everyone back urgently.
"What?!" they all exclaimed at once, jumping out of the bushes and in front of Squall.
"No, wait, it's not what it sounds like-" Squall tried to explain, turning to Lightning, but when he looked in her direction he found nothing but a black feather on the ground, with Lightning no where in sight.
"So, you have a crush on Bartz do ya?" Tidus said while smiling like an idiot.
"No, I was talking to Lightning about something and-"
"But Lightning hasn't come back yet, we came to tell you the Warrior of Light wants us to gather to tell us that Lightning, Tifa and Cosmos won't be back soon and we need a new battle strategy for the battlefield." Explained Zidane.
"But wait until everyone hears about how you admitted you "luv" me!" Said Bartz, running back out of the forest.
"Hey, wait-" Exclaimed Squall. "Urgh, that stupid witch!"
Ultimecia reappeared in her castle, seeing Kefka waltzing around inside.
"So, Ulti, dear, where were you? I was starting to get worried!" He said with a surprising amount of sarcasm in his voice.
"That is none of your business. But if you must know, I was simply looking for a peaceful place to rest." She replied.
"Ooof course you were! I'm sure that little lake was very relaxing, now wasn't it?" Kefka did not waste any time in getting to the point, for sure.
"Say what you want, foolish clown, but my small break truly was relaxing, and, how should I put it...satisfying." She smirked, knowing the jester could read between the lines. "I suggest you try it as well."
"Gotcha! You get points for creativity from me, kii-hahahaha!" Kefka laughed maniacally and left with the thought of choosing his next victim.
"Really, Squall, Bartz? You can do so much better, you know." Said Vaan jokingly.
"Hey, I heard that!" Exclaimed Bartz.
"Just let it go already..." Said Squall, still regretting ever having that conversation with "Lightning" earlier.
Well I am not sure how this story went or if what happened was clear enough, but I'm hoping to get at least a few reviews to get to know I did for my first full story (even if it is short) so please review!
