"Hey Krissy, it's Sam. Look I've tried calling you a bazillion times now. We're an hour and a half from Bills County and knowing you, I know you've already reached. We need to meet up. Call me back. Hurry." Sam left a message on Krissy's phone.
"Bazillion?" Dean enquired, his eyebrows arched- trying his best not to laugh.
"Yeah...bazillion. What's wrong with bazillion?" Sam asked a little offended.
"Nothing" Dean replied smirking, as he looked at the road ahead. Sam though, knew exactly what he was trying to do. Lighten the atmosphere and pretend he didn't care about the fact that Krissy was out there, hunting. That it didn't bother him at all that she and the other kids would be working the case with them.
Dean Winchester was also humming Metallica. So the only person Dean Winchester was fooling, was himself.
Sam respected his brother for a lot of things. But this constant wall that Dean put up- of how macho he was and didn't give a damn- annoyed him. The truth was, most of Dean's problems would be halved if he'd just talk about it-not laugh them off or humiliate any one who tried to communicate with him at an emotional level. For example...me, Sam thought as he grit his teeth. Sam wanted to help his brother, he wanted to be there for him. Especially, during these crappy trials. Dean was trying his best to put on a brave face for Sam as he underwent them, and stayed rock solid in their devastating after effects. It was always during the aftermath and recovery, that Sam felt most disconnected to Dean. He felt-consistently- as if Dean wanted to say something to Sam, to comfort him, but was holding back. Sure, the trials were painful but what was more painful for Sam was the reason his brother had offered to volunteer for the trials-until he was no longer eligible.
"You see a light at the end of this tunnel. I don't!" Dean had said.
Sam had spent a couple of sleepless nights, wondering and wondering some more. Sam wasn't stupid enough to think there was going to be happiness and peace (or in Dean's case, booze and girls) at the end of it all, but had his brother really lost hope? Did he really believe that there was nothing good left for him anymore? If there's one thing Sam believed, was that after everything he and Dean had been through, their story had to end well. If only Dean could feel that way.
"Aren't you awfully quiet today, Samantha?" Dean asked, after what seemed like an hour.
"Hmmm? Ah..oh nothing. Just looking up all the fire reports. If Garth was hunting a Tulpa like Krissy said, he must have burned the place down, right? Or maybe not... maybe that's what took him...maybe he couldn't kill it." Sam speculated, now looking up the missing reports again.
"Yeah, yeah. Let's tell the kids we've found the thing, and send them back home. We'll rescue Garth and drop him off. And then they can go...fishing or whatever" Dean said.
"Dean, they aren't exactly going to listen to us, are they?" Sam said. "Also...I think they should work the case with us." he added looking down.
Dean looked furious. "Are you out of your mind?!", he asked, his jaw clenched.
"Hear me out...it's still recovery time for me. As much as I hate to admit it, I'm not completely fine. Besides those kids are good hunters. And we'll be there the whole time. That way they won't do anything stupid!" Sam argued. " Also, I love you man, but we've gotta meet some other people once a while."
"So, you're telling me you want to risk three teenagers' life because you want a change in scenery?!" Dean asked his nostrils flaring.
No, you jackass. It's because that kid adores you, and you adore her. It's an eight hour drive, but the fact that we're going to see her again has got you more excited than last I remember. Even if it's a prank call -again- I'll be okay, because your stupid face will be happy. Because, spending time with those kids makes you happy, even though you want to send them back right now. Maybe it'll divert your mind.
"Yes, Dean. That's exactly what I'm saying." Sam replied as he picked up his beeping phone. "Hello, Krissy."
"So you and Dean did come, huh?" Krissy asked, the smile in her voice evident.
"Of course we did! Anyway, where are you? Do have Garth's phone?" Sam asked, as Dean sat up a little straighter.
"Yeah. We just reached. I know, I know...it's just twenty miles but we took a little detour, back to Garth's house, to see if he was there just in case. We picked up his journal and his...'Garthed'pedia. It has all the monsters he's sliced till now. Uh...don't ask. As for his phone, it's still tracing back to that motel. We're pulling in there, now."
"Okay, great. Do me a favor and stick tight And hey, Garth's gonna be okay...I know it. We'll meet up and solve this, alright? Book us rooms if you can. We'll have dinner."
"You're gonna let us work the case? Really? Is that what Winchester Grumpy thinks ,as well?"
"Not really, but he'll come around."
"Alright, I'll book us rooms. Come soon as you can. Meanwhile we'll take a look around. We won't go far.", Krissy said as she hung up.
"So, what did she say?" Dean asked, nonchalantly.
Sam smiled. "They've reached and are booking us rooms. We'll meet up, have dinner and figure this thing out. Something tells me Garth's still okay. Besides it's already nine o'clock. All we can do tonight, is figure Garth's whereabouts. I'll need to break into his phone -considering we do get it-and Aiden can help with that. I hope the battery doesn't give in before we find it!"
"Fantastic" Dean replied.
Dinner, he gulped.
