Chapter Two
The Titans

The first time Wally met Garfield, the eccentric jokester was up to his usual tricks with the Dean's Daughter. The attractive goth stood to inherit the school, so she often took a part-time job in the offices to learn the tools of her trade, then she'd run up against the indomitable Garfield and he'd liked her instantly.

The girl, needless to say, had not been pleased by his endless supply of jokes, whoopee cushions and poorly structured puns. One day, a day honored in the memory of every student in the whole school, Garfield had taken things one step too far.

Young, learned, studious Raven Trigon had run out of patience and roared in his face. "Shut up! You're just so irksome! You are not funny, don't you get it? It's like you're some form of dog, always chasing after me. Stop it!" Her entire face was red by the near end of her tirade and the deadly silence just made her anger so much more stifling. Garfield could have attested that the multitude of stares from his year mates and seniors had been felt like a physical weight on him.

She'd then put the cherry on the cake with her final line, and poor Garfield looked like someone had just stepped on his grave and simultaneously slapped him brainless. "You're a beast!"

From then, henceforth, Wally had magnanimously redubbed poor Gar as Beastboy.

For weeks without end, the poor, newly christened Beastboy had suffered constant jeers and sneers from those around him, subject to their vicious insults. Most of it was bred from the fact that Garfield was the only guy to ever talk to Raven and elicit a response from her other than something monosyllabic, and it made the boys around him cruel to the bone.

His shoes would go missing, people would throw raw eggs and meat at him while taunting his status as a vegetarian, someone even snuck into his room once and tore up his uniform using jagged knives made to look like claw marks… teenage boys were imaginative and their ruthless streak ran unchecked due to Garfield's surprisingly gentle and pacifist nature. The teasing got so bad in the classroom, the teacher had him transferred, and that was when he met the notorious Richard John Grayson.

He'd imagined the legendary Robin to be a lot taller and somewhat more muscled, but the solemn boy with the clear blue eyes had the presence of someone born to be a leader. Dick had looked him up and down, as if assessing him before saying, "So, you're Beastboy, huh?"

Garfield had dropped his chin instantly, an act of submission when he realized with dread that this classroom would probably be no different from the last one…

"Wally outdid himself this time, that's a damn cool moniker," Dick concluded, nodding as Garfield's head snapped up in complete surprise at what he had just announced. "I'm Richard, though most people call me Dick."

Beastboy had blinked then, surprised. "I thought your name was Robin."

Dick had smiled something wild then and Gar felt that their names should have been put the other way around. "Nah, that's just West's work," he'd said simply, though Gar could tell Dick no more liked his nickname than he liked his own. "Pleasure to have you on board, Garfield."

At the mention of his name for the first time in more than a month, Gar perked up, smiling widely. "Pleasure to be here, sir!"

Dick had laughed, wrapping a chummy arm around his shoulders, welcoming him. "Good to hear! Though don't call me sir."

To be Continued…

So that's Speedy and Beastboy on his side, though Speedy oscillates. Next chapter should hopefully feature Starfire! Whoo!

Yes, the Dean is Trigon. The Hell Master, I mean, Head Master… I'm such a genius!
