Dragon Wings ch. 3 – Blacker than blood; the Doctor's intent

Sorry this is coming so late, I've been working two jobs and trying to work out an hour a day – I am whipped most days. Sorry again and thanks for your patience.

I own nothing

Kid went cold as her heard those words tumble from Crona's lips; she couldn't mean it like that, no way that was so depraved for her mother to ever consider.

Liz's voiced his fears. "Do you mean…?" She asked slowly, and her heard Crona shuffle close to her and could only hear the faintest whisper thanks to his Shinigami hearing. "She wanted him to be of my flesh and blood, like I am her's in that aspect…." Tears were thick in her voice. "That was Dr. Faust's purpose…"

Kid slid down the wall, his eyes wide and unseeing as his brain tried to process what he had just heard.

Leeah and Kiri made their way up through the entrance hall, Kiri riding piggy back on Leeah; though she seemed rather irritated, she still honored every whiny plea of her weapon.

"Lee-lee, will you make me cookies? … I fought so hard today…"

She sighed contemplating. "Depends... what kind?"

Kiri plopped her chin on Leeah's head. "Well… Chocolate, chocolate chip…?"

She huffed as her stomach agreed "fine."

Kid walked down the staircase in a daze; he needed some water to clear his mind. He came up short as he saw Kiri sprawled out in a one of the living room chairs napping, and then continued onto the kitchen where Leeah was making chocolate chip cookies. He raised an eyebrow, "do I want to know?"

She shrugged in reply, "I always try to make Kiri happy, besides, I figure Crona and everyone else could go for some comfort food." She dumped the chocolate chips in and started folding them into the dough with a blasé attitude.

Kid decided not to fight it and sat on the bench in the corner of the kitchen, propping his elbows on the square tabletop. He watched as Leeah silently went about her baking "did you know?" He asked; his eyes narrowed in suspicion as her shoulders slumped.

"I only suspected…" She whispered slowly, eyes sliding over to his in a dangerous manner. "What she needs is space and time of her own right now, not you dissecting her life and bringing ugly truths of past abuse into light. She'll talk when she's ready." With that the conversation was over, leaving Kid to contemplate her words.

He was lost in his own mind as a mug of tea and a plate of two symmetrically trimmed cookies were placed in front of his nose; he blinked up at her soft smile.

"Relax; they should be coming down in a moment, so please try to remember she needs friends right now." She finished setting the table with plates of cookies and tea for Crona and the Thompson sisters; then left with a large plate of cookies for Kiri.

Patty came bounding down the stairs "KKKKKKIIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDDDDDD-KUUNNN!" She came around the corner with her arms out like an airplane. "Crona-chan's so cute now, Kid-kun!" She plopped into the spot kitty corner from Kid and swung her feet. Liz and Crona came down at a more reasonable pace.

Kid's eyes widened at the sight of Crona in a stylish but comfortable black and white long sleeve shirt and a pair of Patty's rarely used jeans. Liz had even styled her hair up and added a matching set of hair clips. His cheeks turned bright red and he brought his gaze to her eyes and she gave a small twitch of her lips nervously.

"You look lovely Crona…" He whispered, watching her face quickly match her hair.

"Th-th- thank you, Kid-kun…" Her voice was soft as sat across from Kid.

He wanted to hit himself for his racing heart's betrayal, he was Lord Death's son, and he couldn't go around having silly crushes on a witch's child let alone a former enemy.

'…she needs friends right now…'

Leeah's words floated across his mind as he nibbled on one of the cookies absentmindedly. His breath catching in his throat as Crona gave the cutest smile at him. Being friends couldn't hurt; no it would be the honorable thing to do. An act of diplomacy his father would be proud of. He smiled softly back at her and reached across the table to hold her hand, not knowing that with this decision, he irrevocably intertwined their fates. With matching happy smiles their souls took the first step in the endless dance of romance.

Thanks for reading and if you leave a review it makes my day, no lie. - p.s. - Thank you, Soulrick, I needed the motivation.
