Chapter 2 The sorting

Today wasn't really one of Abraxas Malfoy's best days.

First the house elves managed to mess up breakfast. They forgot there was something cooking on the fire, which eventually caught on fire. The elves had started to panic and began to beat themselves for messing the food up, leaving the fire to spread on the wooden counter. Part of the kitchen had burned down before the flames were extinguished by his father who had rushed to the commotion going on in the kitchens.
Abraxas despises house elves.

Second, he was almost late for the train because his mother was fussing around the house, thinking he was forgetting something. Even if he did forget anything of importance, which he most certainly didn't, mind you, he could always send a letter to home. Writing a letter and owling it towards his parents wasn't much of an effort anyways.

And lastly, here he was, walking through the overly crowded and loud train, trying to find at least a quiet compartment where he could sit. Sadly, he wasn't having much luck on that one either. Excited chatter could be heard from behind all the closed compartment doors. He had to duck out of the way as something sailed over his head. Looking behind him, he was just in time to catch the thing flying into a compartment door before it exploded into an array of bright colours. Feeling irritated at the person who had cause this, he almost lost his head! (Malfoys always had a flair for dramatics, the worst it would've done was sing a few hairs.) Abraxas glared at every person within his capacity, hoping all these overly noisy people would just fall dead already.

Did he say it was noisy yet?

Walking up to the wagon door, Abraxas began to feel his chances at finding a quiet compartment wade away. There was only one wagon left, and if there isn't any place there, then he would have to sit (*cue disgusted shudder) with those uneducated beasts.

Standing in the middle of the pathway of the last wagon, Abraxas began to look around for an compartment. Eventually, he came upon a quiet place. Thanking his lucky stars, Abraxas wanted to just skip down the last steps towards his destination. That would definitely shame his pureblood pride, so of course he didn't do something as low as skipping. Though, he couldn't really stop the slight spring in his step as he walked up to the door.

Smirking triumphantly, Abraxas shoved open the compartment door and he was surprised to see it was already occupied.

Quickly schooling his face into an annoyed one, he pulled his chin up and looked down at the two inferior wizards.

"Can I sit here? This is the only quiet cabin in the whole train, after all." Abraxas said in a haughty tone, lacing it with a twinge of arrogance. It wasn't like he could help it, really. Being born into an old pureblood lineage, Abraxas was taught from a very young age he should never show any weakness, especially towards strangers. And as the sole heir to the Malfoy family, a lot of things were expected from him. His father, especially, was very strict in that department. If it wasn't up to his standards, then he would punish you for it.

How you show yourself to the public eye, also counts for where you stand. Only the strong can survive, his father would tell him that almost every day, until it was drilled into his head.

The strong will prevail once the weak have perished.

Abraxas sat down into the empty seat next to a brown-haired boy, probably a first year like him. Not waiting for an answer from the two other occupants.

He stuck his hand out and tilted his chin up the slightest bit, giving off an air of confidence.
"I'm Malfoy, Abraxas Malfoy," he waited for the brown-haired kid to take his hand, ignoring the blond sitting across from him. "And you are?"

Abraxas wondered if the other was a pureblood. He sure had the aristocratic looks that came with it, and an air of confidence only a pureblood could pull off.

After a few seconds of eying the other up, Tom finally took the hand offered and gave it a little shake.
"Tom Riddle."

Abraxas snatched his hand back as soon as the two words were spoken, as if burnt. His face scrunched up in a disgusted sneer, scooting a little further away from the other.

He thought he heard an amused snort from the other side of the compartment, but he didn't pay it any mind. Instead he chose to wipe his hand on his outer robe, hoping to get rid of any diseases this mudblood might've carried with him.

"That's a muggle name," he said, stressing the word muggle. He felt disgusted with himself for even thinking that this boy could've been a pureblood. How preposterous!

Tom raised an elegant eyebrow, surprised at the others antics. Slate eyes narrowed at the other, gazing at the other coolly. "What of it?"

Tom knew what it meant, of course. He'd made the discovery after reading several of the second hand books the school funds of Hogwarts provided for orphan children. Prejudice against muggle-borns littered the contents, written by overdue wizards.
It had managed to dim his excitement and high spirits for the first time since Albus Dumbledore, a professor transfiguration at Hogwarts, had given him his letter.

Tom certainly wasn't proud of the fact that he was probably a muggle-born. He didn't like not being the top-dog. As an orphan who had lived in a poor environment with almost nothing, he had been the under-dog for long enough. When he first heard he was a wizard, a magical person, he was so elated. He was special. Those stupid caretakers and annoying kids at the orphanage were nothing compared to him. He was superior.

Of course he would have to learn everything there is to magic, but the second hand books he has provided him nothing but the most basic concepts.

The first thing he would do once he got at Hogwarts, was search for the library.

Abraxas raised his eyebrows, surprised the other retaliated with such venom. Narrowing his eyes suspiciously.

The silence dragged on, both boys glaring daggers at each other.
Naruto sat silently, amused at the whole situation happening before him. He leaned back in his seat, crossing his feet over the other. Crossing his hands behind his neck, he gave a quick yank, gaining a loud crack. He sighed, feeling his muscles relax. What? He wasn't used to sitting in a train, and these seats were very uncomfortable. Naruto could feel Yuki stirring under his cloak. The fox kit was sleeping once he got on the train, finding the warmth and the 'aura', as she so eloquently put it, he gave off comforting. Naruto snorted at the thought. He? Comforting? The villagers in Konoha would've been laughing their asses off right about now, well, no they wouldn't dare to do that if he was anywhere in the vicinity. They would be too scared to do such a thing. Naruto could feel the menacing grin start to spread on his face. Looking up, Naruto was met with the sight of Riddle and Malfoy both staring at him, their slightly creeped out expressions well hidden. Not that that would work for Naruto, of course. He had better eye-sight than most, no, make that all people.
The perks of being a demon, he mused.

Raising an eyebrow at them, he stared back.

"What?"

They didn't respond.

Tom turned away, looking back outside the window again. Naruto shrugged one shoulder, not caring one way or the other what the others thought of him.

Abraxas was still eyeing the blond though, a thoughtful look gracing his features. Naruto stared back, unperturbed.

Abraxas opened his mouth, before closing it again after no sound came out. He cleared his throat, trying to regain his composure. Looking back at the blond sitting across from him, he narrowed his eyes at the slightly familiar face…

"Have we met before..?"

Tom glanced back from the window towards the pureblood sitting next to him, raising his eyebrow slightly. Seeing the other looking at the person across from him, he got curious at what the pale-blond boy meant. (He was just curious about the sunny-blond enigma sitting across from him, but he would never admit that though. Not even towards himself.)

Tom looked on from the corner of his eye as he turned his face back towards the window with rapt attention, though he hid it very well. He hoped to see a glimpse of what he knew was the blonds (what was his name again? Narrator? Narupo? Naruto, yes.) true personality.

Naruto gave the pale-blond a bright grin, aware of the slate-eyes from the brunet looking at him very discretely. His eyes turned to slits, looking as if he gave the boy a closed-eye smile. Though, he only did it to hide the mischievous glint he knew was shining in his sapphire eyes.
Naruto was a master at deceiving and hiding his true persona. But even he can't close off his eyes from sometimes showing his emotions and thoughts.

But he would make sure to change that.

"I'm Naruto Uzumaki, dattebayo!" he exclaimed loudly, sticking his hand out for the other to take.

Abraxas and Tom both jumped slightly at the sudden volume coming from the blonds mouth. Abraxas blinked, looking at the other like he had grown a second head. Tom, was doing much the same, though more suspicious than anything.'

Naruto, having forgotten that a fox lay in his lap, jerked the sleeping Yuki awake with his sudden brash movements.
She gave an annoyed yip, sticking her head out from under the black cloak. Big icy-blue eyes blinked at the sudden brightness, before gazing at the two other occupants. Naruto scratched the back of his neck, giving off an air of awkwardness.
"Eheh.. sorry Yuki, I forgot you were there."
Yuki turned back towards her master, yipping one more time before ducking her head back beneath his robes and disappearing out of sight on his lap.

That morning Yuki had told him everything she knew, about her mother and her species who were hunted down by the wizards. She wasn't a normal fox, no she was a kitsune. Kitsune's are intelligent beings, who possess magical abilities. Kitsune's have the ability to shape shift into a human, male or female, and so trick the humans. Yuki was still young, only once she was at least a few months older would she be able to shape shift into a woman. The older she gets, the wiser and more powerful she becomes.

That's why kitsune were hunted down. They were too powerful, the wizards (and muggles alike) started to feel threatened. Wizards put up a declaration that all kitsune's were to be disposed off.
Naruto wasn't happy once he heard it from the small kit in his lap. Naruto would make sure that Yuki would stay safe, and give her the proper protection. He knew she would give him her dedication and undivided loyalty. Actually, she already had. Once Naruto saved her from that pet shop, Yuki would do anything for him if he so much as asked for it.

Not like he would make her do any dangerous things. At least, not yet. Not until she (and he himself) had the proper training in magic and was strong enough to defend herself from any danger.

Kitsune's also gained one tail after every millennium, but most never get past two. The tails are to show your power and your intelligence towards the other beings, the more you have, the higher up you are. Nine is the most tails to have been gained, and that was the Kyuubi no Kitsune. The kyuubi wasn't really a normal kitsune anymore. It was a demon, a force of nature which couldn't be killed.

He was the king of the demons. The master of the Kitsune's. And it was stuck inside him.

The Kyuubi was actually slowly being drained, it's powers and raw chakra being absorbed by Naruto. His fathers seal, the one Minato used to seal away the Kyuubi with as it attacked his village, was an ingenious little thing, really. Slowly but surely, all the chakra was being sucked up and merged with his own.

You could already see the signs, his slitted pupils, the sharpened canines and his nails which were a little like claws. Naruto had exceptional taste, smell, eye-sight and could hear everything very clear. Even now, he could hear the heartbeats of the two boys sitting in front of him. The merge would be completed when he was eighteen at the most.

He would be the next Kyuubi no kitsune.

Luckily, the old fool Hokage had no idea what was happening with him or his seal. All he knew was that the nine-tailed demon was locked away, never to escape again. Heh, that loon still thought he could be saved from the dark side. It was already too late though, he was already one with his inner dark side. He had accepted and embraced it a long time ago. Why else would he willingly kill people? He didn't do it for the money, that most certainly not. And the Hokage probably knew that too, but was too far gone in his delusions. In the hope, oh, how he loathed that word, he had hoped when he was still stuck in that ratty old orphanage, hoping that he would one day be saved from the abuse. But that day never came. The old man hoped that he would turn a coin and start doing good.

Naruto snorted internally, 'As if.'

The Hokage made him a hunter-nin so he could legally kill. That was the only way he could release his 'frustration'. Otherwise he would've killed the civilians a long time ago.

Coming out of his inner musings, Naruto looked back up at the two boys seated across from him. He rose a hand towards his neck and started to scratch at it in a way to seem like he was caught taking a cookie from the cookie-jar.

"What was that?" Abraxas asked, incredulously.

Naruto tilted his head to the side, giving him a confused look.
"What's what?"
Abraxas' eyebrow twitched slightly, the only indication that he was getting annoyed with the blond trickster. Oh, how Naruto loved to mess with people's heads.

"That thing," here Abraxas indicated with his hand at his lap. "That came out from under your cloak."

"Oh that."

It remained silent. Abraxas (and Tom) waiting for an answer from the blond, who kept quiet, choosing to stare out at the landscape. During the dragging silence, Naruto spotted a giant building in the distance. Figuring out that was his destination, he glanced from the corner of his eye at Abraxas and Tom who were still staring at him expectantly.

"Well?" Abraxas demanded, raising one eyebrow. He wanted an answer, and he wanted it now. "Are you even allowed to bring it here?"

Naruto turned back to them, a confused look on his face. "Hm? Did you say something?"

Abraxas' face turned red from ear to ear. 'Heh, where's your composure now hm?' Naruto snickered evilly in his mind.

Abraxas opened his mouth, about to yell something to the blond who dared ignore him, when he was cut off as the train jerked to a sudden stop.
His jaws snapped painfully shut as his head hit the back of the compartment.

Naruto smiled sweetly at the pale blond, his eyes turning red for a split second. Standing up, he took Yuki from under his cloak and placed her on his shoulder. She yawned, maw opening wide showing the white canines. She blinked blearily at the others, before nuzzling her snout in Narutos neck, tail swishing lazily from side to side.

Naruto walked towards the door, shoving it open. But before he stepped outside he turned around, looked at Abraxas with a bored expression before he shifted his gaze towards Tom. Cocking his head to the side, he gave a smirk and winked at the other before disappearing out of the compartment.

Abraxas gaped at the door the blond just left through, years of strict teaching of how to keep his composure gone out the window.

Tom just sat there, silently staring at the doorway. The only difference would be the slight pink dusted across his cheeks. He, too, stood up, glanced at the pale-blond who just sat there, staring, and left through the same way as Naruto just went a couple of seconds prior.

Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.

Stepping up on the crowded platform, students were filing out of the train. Older students were walking in groups, heading toward carriages which were pulled by, were those black-winged skeletal horses? Naruto shook his head, just ignoring it for now. Most students were filed out of the train by now, Naruto could see just who are first years and who weren't. Well, not like that wasn't easy. Just look for the little people who looked hopefully lost at what to do, not that hard.

"First years! Gather around!" a tall, lanky wizard shouted over the noise of the crowd of children. "First years! Come on! I don't have all day!"

Naruto casually strolled up to the wizard holding a torch over his head, creating eerie shadows across his face. Naruto could see the first-year student walk cautiously towards the man, scared by his looks. Naruto scrunched his nose up in disgust. These pipsqueaks have no back-bone at all. How disappointing.

Standing next to the tall man, making him look like a dwarf. Okay, so he wasn't that tall. Who cares?! Crossing his arms over his head, the hood from his cloak pulled low over his head so only his chin was visible, Naruto glanced around at the kids scrambling up to the small group gathered.

Naruto could feel the eyes of the other wizard on him, curiosity burning within those murky-brown eyes. He just chose to ignore it, tapping his feet impatiently on the stone-littered pathway.

As all the first-years were gathered, the wizard held the torch even higher and turned around. "Alright! Follow me, first-years!"

After a few minutes of walking, Naruto having spotted both Riddle and the Malfoy boy between the crowd. Tom was walking alone, glancing curiously around. Malfoy was with a few people, presumably his friends, and was whispering. Malfoy glanced in his direction, probably saying something about him, and glared heatedly as he caught his eye. Naruto grinned, canines glinting in the fire-light. Malfoy turned away, his eyes showing that he was a little disturbed.
Naruto chuckled darkly to himself, a few people in hearing distance giving him odd looks and stepping as far-away from him as they could.

Eventually they arrived in front of a big, black lake where boats were lined up on shore.

They were instructed to get in, only four people per boat. Naruto just stepped into the closest to him and sat down, looking at all the others rushing in. As if it matters where and with whom you sit with? It's only a boat ride of a few minutes, seriously. Sometimes he just didn't understand people.

Feeling the boat rock, indicating someone getting on, Naruto continued to ignore them. Drowning out the incessant chatter of the other three children as the boat pushed itself off shore, Naruto just stared out at the water.

He grinned. Were that mermaids in the water? He waved at them. They looked very surprised at being seen, after all no one was supposed to be able to see through the dark waters of the black lake. The mer-folk scrambled away, hiding from the blonds sight.

Naruto had the sudden spontaneous idea to jump off the boat and scare every person shitless by walking on the water, but that would give too much away so he quickly squished the idea as soon as it came in mind. It would've been funny though…

"Who were you waving at?" one kid asked.

Naruto glanced back, sapphire hidden under the shadows of the cloak meeting with chocolate brown ones. It was a girl, with chestnut-brown hair cut until her shoulders. She had dimples in her cheeks, giving her the cute and innocent look.

It was just an average girl, nothing special about her or her magic. 'Probably a Ravenclaw or a Hufflepuff,' Naruto thought. He gave her a small smile.
"Oh, just the mermaids at the bottom of the lake."

She gave him an odd look before peering over the edge of the boat into the dark waters below.

"I don't see anything, though."
"That's because they're hiding now."
"Oh… well, that's a pity. I would've loved to see them." She said forlornly, sitting upright again.

"What's your name by the way? My name's May." A muggle born. Naruto really hoped for her she wouldn't be placed in Slytherin. From what he read about the houses, Slytherin was the most biased on what they thought about muggle-borns and the like. And not in a good light either.

"It's nice to meet you May, my name's Naruto."

It was silent after that, the people all turned towards the castle standing on top of the hill, windows glittering against the dark contrast of the night-sky. It was a pretty sight.

Now that he mentioned it, Naruto was pretty hungry since it was already pretty late.
He hoped for all the people there, that they'd better have loads of food. This is actually a part that really sucks about becoming a demon. He has a high metabolism, because it burns so fast through his system that he almost can't get full. He has to eat for almost 10 men, and even that is putting it lightly.

The soft ooh's and aah's coming from the other first-years was already getting on his nerves.
He was hungry and starting to get cranky. Seriously, can't they just hurry it up?

After four minutes they finally docked, Naruto waited for the other attendants to step off the boat before he, too, finally sprang from the small wooden boat and landed on the stone steps on the edge of the castle.

They were ushered inside and led towards a small room where a man stood waiting for them. He had black curly hair, cut short till his ears. The man wore a brown suit, instead of the usual robes. He was smiling at all the children lining in front of him, clapping his hands in a jovial manner.
"Ah! Lovely! Welcome! Welcome to Hogwarts," he said over the excited chattering from the eleven year-olds. "I am Horace Slughorn, I teach potions here. You may all call me professor slughorn." The hushed whispers quieted down almost immediately, everyone paying attention to the man at the front of the room. "Good, good. You'll all be lead into the dining room after I get back. There you will be sorted into one of the four houses, those are Slytherin, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. Once you're sorted you will sit at the house-table respectively where you will all eat dinner after. Once dinner is over, the heads of your house will lead you to your common room, where you will live in the next seven years." There were excited whispers going around. Some hoping to be sorted in a certain house while others hope to be sorted with their friends and/or family. Professor Slughorn waited patiently for the children to calm down before continuing. "Alright, I'll be back in five minutes. You will all wait here." And the professor was gone through the big double doors, closing them before anyone could see what lay beyond them.

The silence was soon once again broken, everyone getting hyped up.

Naruto stood to the side, watching the events unfold.

He saw Malfoy approaching Riddle with his friends. Naruto raised an eyebrow, waiting to see what will happen. He saw them sitting in the same boat, talking to each other. But it wasn't really his business, not that that didn't make him any less curious.

"Riddle," Malfoy said, standing before him. Tom glanced up, raising an eyebrow. Abraxas didn't say anything after that, just standing there with his two 'friends'. A girl with raven curls and white skin and gray eyes was talking at Tom, asking him in what house he wanted to be. Naruto's eyebrows shot up in his hairline. Something definitely happened on that boat-ride. But, they weren't 'friends' so to say. More like, leader and follower. She had an undertone of awe and a slight fear in her stance and tone of voice. Most people wouldn't have caught up on it, because it was so slight that it was almost undetectable. Naruto grinned. Things are certainly getting interesting. He was curious at how Riddle did it though. Maybe it was his magic.. Naruto could feel it, the raw, dark power coming from the slate-eyed boy. It was almost addicting. It would be for most people, probably. But Naruto wasn't as weak-minded as those low-live wizards and civilians.

Hearing the door opening again brought him back from his thoughts. Professor Slughorn stood before the door, grinning at them. "Alright everyone, form two neat rows. Mind your step an walk behind me." Everyone scrambled to get in line, excitement running through their veins.

Naruto stood at the very back, standing beside a random kid, who was glancing around him, like a scared animal. 'Weak.' His mind supplied, and he agreed.

As Slughorn stood at the front of the lines, he nodded his head and turned around towards the big double-doors which covered almost half the wall.

Slughorn slowly pushed them open, for the extra dramatic effect. Naruto almost rolled his eyes. He felt something shift on his shoulders. Yuki lifted her head up, wanting to see what was going on. Naruto lifted his hand and gave her a soft stroke on the head. She leaned into the touch, giving his hand a head-butt. Naruto lowered his arm again, making it look like he just rubbed his nose.

The doors slowly started to reveal the dining hall that lay beyond. And Naruto had to admit that it was a pretty impressive sight. Not that he would ever admit that aloud to anyone. Ever.

Candles are floating in the air, lighting the room with their light, giving it a warm, soft glow. The ceiling, which was bewitched to look like the sky, showed hundreds, or maybe even thousands of stars glittering in the blackened sky. Four long tables stood, lined up next to each other. Students of each house sitting at their respective table, chattering away. One table stood at the end of the mass-hall, on a stone platform. Older wizards and witches sat at their respective place there, the headmaster seated in the middle in the biggest chair.

Naruto made eye-contact with headmaster Dippet, they held for a couple of seconds before Dippet broke it by turning away to say something to a wizard sitting on his left side.

Hm, Naruto would have to win that guys trust first. With it, he would have more possibilities and opportunities. But that's something for a later date. After all, he had a lot of time on his hands.

A wooden stool stood before the teachers table, an old, ratty looking hat sitting on it. The first-years were held to a stop at the end of the pathway before the old hat on the stool seemed to move. A tear in the wrinkled hat opened up and it began to sing a song.

Naruto didn't pay much attention to what was being said in the introduction song. He was much more fascinated with the fact that that old hat was, in fact, alive. It was only when the whole dining hall started clapping, that Naruto was brought back to what was going on.

The song had ended and now the first-years were being called to the front. Naruto watched, curious, as the first kid sat on the stood and the hat was placed on top of her head.

After a second, the hat opened its mouth and called out; "Gryffindor!"

The whole Gryffindor table started clapping and yelling, ushering the girl to one of the empty places at the table.

It went on like that for a while, Malfoy was being called to the front and got sorted in Slytherin, together with his friends. Only a handful of people remained, the ones at the end of the alphabet. Eventually Riddle was called and Naruto watched, intrigued, at what will happen. He had already made his guess, it was most likely Slytherin. But that still didn't make him any less curious.

Tom strode down the remaining steps, a grace to his walk like only royalty could have. He sat down on the wooden stool and waited patiently for the hat to be placed on his head.

"Ah, interesting. Very interesting, indeed."

Tom jerked his head back slightly, startled by the sudden voice echoing in his mind.

"Yes, I know exactly where to place you my boy." Before Tom could so much as respond a voice boomed out.

"Slytherin!"

Loud clapping was heard as the hat was taken from his head. He strode towards the table, sitting down at an empty spot. He turned back around watching as the last few kids were being sorted. There was only one person he was interested in to know though, and that was the one hiding his face behind a cloak.

Naruto Uzumaki, hm?

As Naruto stood, watching the last kid be sorted into Hufflepuff, he waited for his name to be called by the teacher with the scroll.

"Uzumaki, Naruto."

He walked forward, conscious of all the eyes following his back.

Headmaster Dippet leaned forward in his seat, curious about what will happen.

As he sat on the stool, he took off his hood, Yuki already hiding inside his cloak, and let the hat be placed on his head.

There was a silence, everyone on the edge of their seats as they waited for what would happen.

A heartbeat later the hat started to screech in agony, wriggling with a pained look on its face, trying to get away from the blond.
"Ah! Get me away! Get me off!"

Everyone jerked back in surprise, looking wide-eyed at the strange reaction from the sorting head.
Naruto reached up and took the hat off his head, he looked at it as it looked at him with fearful eyes, shivering slightly.

"M-monster!"

Naruto eyed it, a bored look on his face as he placed the hat in the hands of the stunned teacher.

"I'm still not sorted, though." He looked at headmaster Dippet, watching as the man shook himself out of his stupor.

"Um, yes, well." Armando looked towards the hat seated in the arms of one of his professors. He could sympathize with the thing, really.

"What house must Mr. Uzumaki stay in?" he asked the sorting hat, looking back at the blond standing patiently with his arms crossed over his chest. He looked positively bored.

"SLYTHERIN!" The sudden yell surprised him slightly, making him jump. He glared at the sorting hat. "Definitely Slytherin…"

Naruto shrugged, walking towards the table and taking an empty seat. The whole hall was silent, not even the Slytherin table was clapping. They were eyeing the blond, a calculative gaze in most of them.

He catched Tom looking at him, a smirk gracing his features. Naruto grinned, pulling his hood back over his sunny blond hair.
