Alright now the BIG changes have started happening if you read the story before. 1) I didn't give them overpowered machines from the start then retcon them almost immediately. 2) This thing is actually underpowered as it doesn't have the electric upgrade. 3) They're separated from the start. 4) I didn't drop hints that gave away minor plot points. Anyways enough about that I have more important things to say. I'm going off of the assumption that Spyro's World has absolutely NO HUMANS despite them being in the original series. SCREW ACCENTS! Sooner or later I'm just going to end up writing Tosh's lines regularly… I'll inform you when that happens. STORY TIME!
(LINE BREAKAGE!)
Disclaimer: I shall dutifully do my job and… oh yeah that's right, put a disclaimer. I own Spyro and Starcraft in my dreams. Not reality. They belong to Insomniac and Blizzard respectively
Chapter 3
Operation: Rescue the drag- I mean A.I.
Spyro honestly didn't know what to say. Thankfully the thing said it for him. "Now I don't know the extent of your body so keep to the back of the pack. If you think that something's being too much of a problem then deal with it, otherwise don't get yourself killed. We're going to go out to find your buddy once the lava dies down in a couple minutes." Spyro took this as a moment to gather his thoughts. He decided to work with the beginning and work his way forward.
One moment he was connected with the whole world and was slowly putting it back together then… something happened. Spyro concentrated harder and harder but couldn't remember. Were they attacked? Did Malefor break out somehow and send them here? Did they… die? He would've pondered this over more if a voice didn't interrupt him.
"Incoming Transmission" a very odd female voice said. "Accept?" Spyro thought about then managed to croak out a yes. Spyro was a bit shocked about his rather gravelly voice, and then he realized that during this entire escapade he had yet to talk. The screen popped up again and 'Tosh' showed up. "Good job survivin' long enough. Now I'm goin' ta try and give you as much information as I can before you have to head out. I don' know where you came from but it be obvious that you ain't never seen a human before."
"My name is Gabriel Tosh and I only saved you because if I didn' then the Zerg would have a new super weapon. So once you go off world, you're not my problem but for now you are." Spyro waited patiently as this was his first and possibly only source of information. "That machine you're in right now is an unfinished prototype. I had my engineers modify it so you would at least have claws. It's not particularly sturdy but it can kill quick, so as long as you don't get overwhelmed you should be able to handle anything sent your way." Spyro thought this over. "How did you get me but not Cynder?" The 'human' now known as Gabriel Tosh just started laughing. "HA! You CAN talk! I only assumed that you could because you obeyed my instructions." Spyro didn't know how to handle this at first but then felt like something was off about that statement.
Before he could question it Gabriel Tosh started talking again. "Anyways you managed to crash-land fairly close to each otha. I started trying to get you two out of there, I got you out and starte' weakenin' the secon' crystal but then the Zerg came and chased off my guys. Last I checked your girl managed to break free so I left her the message that she should stay put as long as possible." Spyro let this all digest. He had no idea where Cynder was or if she was even alive, he had no idea why he was here, and he had no idea if he should even trust these people. He didn't feel like this was an adventure to save the world anymore, it just felt like survival.
He was broken out of his thoughts by Gabriel Tosh. "Anyway it's about time for you ta go." The 'transmission' cut and Spyro checked the viewport. While he was idle a group of about forty blue armored humans gathered around him looking out at the lava. He could also see a couple white armored ones with a big white shield on one hand and some kind of green goop in a weapon on the other hand. (Medics… look'em up for a better picture)
Spyro just watched and then the pale human's voice from before started talking again. "Alright, this is a recovery mission; you get in, find the A.I., and then get out. These are the co-ordinates. Spyro heard a small noise and detached himself from the viewport to look at one of the screens that he could now recognize as a map. One of the plateaus had a partially revealed area surrounded by black. What was revealed were many zerglings and some kind of monstrous snakes wandering about looking for something. "You've been given your orders, now get out there and shoot up some Zerg!" The lava started receding and the humans started cheering as they started running down the slope with Spyro clunking after.
The running quickly devolved into a jog which forced Spyro to walk due to the fact that his robot was twice as tall as them and twice as long. He picked up from the group transmissions that originally Raynor's Raiders was hired to mine some crystals for Gabriel Tosh who thought that the mining was taking too long. He also got the idea that most of them didn't like the idea of 'Fighting with an oversized toaster'. Spyro just ignored that and focused on the mission which they were actually getting close to.
The plateau that they arrived at though wasn't what they saw on the map though. The ground looked horribly purple and sometimes Spyro could swear that he was seeing it move. Then one of the marines an older sounding man commented. "Dammit, I hate walking on the Creep. Why can't the Zerg just use buildings like us and NOT use living floors?" Spyro had to withhold a small gag reflex. He quickly swallowed down the feeling when he imagined Cynder being pinned down by one of those Zerglings.
The marines went in first, then Spyro went in with the Medics. "Keep an eye out boys, don't want those fuckers to catch us off guard." The area went deathly quiet. They were nearing the spot on the map where Cynder was supposed to be but they had yet to see any of the Zerg that were shown. The pale human that he realized was the one named Raynor spoke over the transmission again. "Hold up boys, Matt says he can get us a single radar scan. I'm gonna try to find the Zerg with it."
Spyro detached himself and looked at the map, when the signal that the radar was used around them went up his eyes went wide. There were small exclamation points everywhere. He heard the bark of the weapons again and quickly looked back into the viewport to find that almost all of the exclamation points were now Zerglings attacking the soldiers. There had to be a hundred of them but the Marines were holding their own. Thankfully Spyro was in the center of the formation unlike one of the medics who was pulled into the swarm of zerglings. Spyro didn't want to think about what happened to that medic.
Quickly trying to think about something to do Spyro remembered that he shouldn't engage a large group. He also remembered that not all of the exclamation points had shown themselves. He looked around to locate where one was and then pounced, leaping over the Zerglings and Marines he furiously dug at the dirt with his claws which revealed a small green zerg animal. Before Spyro could do anything it blew up in his face and simulated pain erupted from his stomach and legs as he took the shot point blank. It continued to burn and seemingly eat away at his stomach.
Spyro barely managed to get back onto his legs before Raynor started talking again. "Quick! Head over to those rocks. No Zerg are buried there. Spyro, take care of any Hydralisks that try to hit us at range. Spyro would've checked his map if that didn't mean certain death and instead had to find the rocks on his own. When he did he saw three of the monstrous snakes already moving to pin the soldiers.
With the pain subsiding Spyro leapt at the closest one where his shear weight killed it. He pounced on the next one which barely managed to dodge him but still lost an arm, not even thinking Spyro swiped at it which cleaved it in two. Turning on a dime Spyro spotted the last one which by now had seen him slaughter the others was well out of range for any pounce. It spat some kind of projectile out which hit Spyro in what felt like his left shoulder. Seeing it 'reload' Spyro quickly dodged the second shot and started running towards it. With one clean swipe the Hydralisk never got the chance to fire its third shot.
Spyro didn't bother jumping back behind the soldiers and instead started leaping around the rocks hoping to avoid those explosive green ones. It was while he was jumping he saw a group of five slithering up one side of the rock walls trying to get the drop on the soldiers. Spyro leapt and bounded across the fields earning a couple more burns on his feet for it but making it to the wall.
One of the Hydralisks saw him and hissed. This alerted the others to Spyro's attack. Not that it mattered because they were all lined up in a not-so straight line. This allowed him to bound from rock to rock and easily take them down except for the last one. He got a single shot out which hit Spyro in the leg and caused him to tumble. Unfortunately for the Hydralisk momentum was not its friend as Spyro's mechanical body came crashing down on it.
Spyro tried to get up but found that one of his own personal legs couldn't move. He quickly took a moment to detach from the viewport and look at his leg. Nothing was wrong but the machinery refused to budge. Going back into the viewport Spyro looked at the leg and saw that one of the projectiles was jammed in his leg. Using his other paw he awkwardly got the thing out. Now with free movement of his leg Spyro got back into the action. He climbed to the top of the rocks only to find that another group of hydralisks had gotten to the top of the rocks and were now firing at the soldiers. How long had his repair taken?
Spyro saw another spine fly and decided that he could feel sorry about it later. Spyro ran along the tips of the rocks and started mauling the hydralisks. It repeated this way for what felt like hours but was only revealed to be three minutes. In that span of time Spyro killed around thirty of those hydralisks while marines killed two hundred zerglings. They had lost fourteen men and two medics. But it was thanks to Raynor's plan that they were all alive.
Raynor called in again. "Good job men, I'm sending over two SCVs to make you some bunkers. You're going to have to hold out there until we get the body built for Cynder."
The soldiers started scoping out the area only to find another entrance to the plateau, most likely the one that the Zerg used to get in. The group split up into two groups consisting of 13 soldiers and three medics each in order to guard both entrances. Spyro on the other hand was personally told to start getting rid of the three foot tall mounds of flesh in the ground. Apparently they were the reason why the ground was… alive.
Spyro found out two things upon slaying his first mound. One was that the living floor quickly disappears afterwards, and two being that they kind of explode. From that point on Spyro kept to dashing in, slashing at them, and then darting out. While he was searching for more he heard some rocks nearby tumble. Still a bit twitchy from the battle Spyro turned on a dime only to find nothing there. Unconvinced that nothing was truly there he kept on searching.
He carefully made his way up the small ridges of rock then quickly jumped down to hopefully surprise what was on the other side. Spyro's eyes widened and his heart nearly stopped when he saw a very familiar black and red figure. It was Cynder, he finally found Cynder.
