Derek Morgan nearly died yesterday.
He was caught utterly unaware when Morgan pushed him, but all thought of yelling at him left the instant he heard the gun shot. His training kicked in immediately; gun in hand he shot the attacker without a second thought. He only saw Morgan's fallen body after making sure their attacker was dead.
He spent the way to the hospital blaming himself. How could he not have seen the offender approach? Why hadn't he paid more attention to his surroundings, to Morgan? He barely even noticed Morgan these days, he always seemed to somehow fade into the background, halfway merging with it. He realized with a start that he couldn't even remember the last time they had talked, really talked, like friends are supposed to do.
Yesterday he nearly lost his best friend.
Today he realises that he's already lost him months ago.
