Hello, my readers! Yes, it is the moment you have all been waiting for, the game! Now, I intend for Alex to be quite good at hand to hand combat as well as fighting with her two knives. I would love to thank those who favorite my story, as well as those who review! You make my life worth living! (not in the emo way, though.)
Chapter 2
I Capture a Flag
My dream sucked. I was somewhere underground, but not in the Underworld. It was wetter, more evil, more lonely. It felt like a prison; then I saw a small boy wearing a Greek tunic and sandals huddled in a corner, sobbing. He was covered in mud and he was scraped all over. I realized that this place was exactly a prison. Walls stretched to the night sky, but it was far from comforting, it was a tease. The walls were about thirty feet high and were polished marble. No one could get out, unless they could fly. The sky was inviting, but unattainable. Crates and benches lay strewn around the large stone room. Weapons and tools were dumped in piles, benches and tables had been smashed to splinters, there were streaks of blood on the floor. The effect wasn't comforting, I couldn't blame the kid for crying. I was about to go comfort him, but metal screeched open and several people entered the room.
Two guards dressed in Greek armor dragged an old man into the enclosure and threw him on the ground in a battered heap. The little boy jumped up and ran to the man. "Father!" The old man struggled to sit up. His robes were in tatters, his hair was streaked with gray, and his nose was broken. His lips were bloodied. The boy took the old man's head in his arms. "What did they do to you?" he asked quietly. Then he turned to the guards and shouted "I'll kill you, all of you!"
"There will be no killing today." a voice said. The guards moved aside. Behind them stood a tall man in white robes. He wore a thin circlet of gold on his head and his beard was pointed like a spear blade. His eyes glittered cruelly. "You helped the Athenian kill my Minotaur, Daedalus. You turned my own daughter against me."
"You did that yourself, your majesty." The old man spat out his title with venom. A guard planted a kick in his ribs. He groaned in pain. The young boy cried, "Stop!"
"You love your maze so much," the king said, "I have decided to let you stay here. This will be your workshop. Make me new wonders; amuse me. Every maze needs a monster, you shall be mine."
"I don't fear you." the old man croaked.
The king smiled coldly. He locked his eyes on the boy. "But a man cares about his son, eh? Displease me, old man, and the next time my guards inflict a punishment, it will be on him!" The king swept out of the room with his guards, leaving the boy and his father alone in the darkness.
"What will we do? Father, they will kill you." the young boy said.
The old man swallowed with difficulty. He tried to smile, but it was a gruesome sight with his bloody mouth. "Take heart, my son, we will find a way." He gazed at the stars above. It was surely a beautiful prison. A metal bar sealed the their fates with a fatal BOOM! as the door was latched, locking them in.
I woke up in a cold sweat.

The sun hadn't even started to rise yet, but I was up. I never got much sleep when I was a kid. Went to sleep at eleven o' clock or so, woke up around three. I never really thought much of sleep; never thought it was important. Who needs time to recharge and heal, especially during the most exciting part of the whole day: night. So many things happen when it is dark out; when night is upon the world, the people like me come out and have fun. Shadows and darkness are my refuge sometimes, they offer an escape from hectic problems and energetic kids.
But, when you have a lovely nightmare or two, your perspective on sleep can really change.
I was exhausted, but I suppose a couple good fights, some emotional stress, and a couple death threats and prophecies can get anyone tired. I turned over, punching my pillow into a more comfortable shape. It didn't help. It never does. Kicking off my sleeping bag, I sat up and pulled on my black boots. I might as well explore, get a feel of the camp for the game tomorrow. It was warm out; I didn't grab my jacket as I tip-toed out the door. I walked out of the U shape cabin area and walked passed the Big House. The woods were a no-go, there were monsters there and I don't feel like getting my butt kicked at three in the morning. Maybe the beach? Even though I'm afraid of water, I can enjoy its beauty.
I trudged down a gentle slope and stepped onto sand. I froze. There was a dark shape in the distance, throwing rocks into the sea. I straightened out of my defense/running away pose. It was probably another camper who had the same idea as me, looking at the sunrise over Long Island Sound. I envisioned myself next to him and I was there. I blinked at the travel, but little distances like that didn't affect me much. It was the Cyclops that had been picked by the Athena Cabin for the game. He was twisting some wire, bolts, and bronze absentmindedly as he stared out at the sea. He dropped it when I appeared.
"Oh, sorry! I didn't want to scare you! Is it broken?"
Blushing, he stooped to pick up his scraps and wire. "No, it is alright. I am Tyson." He looked at me with his one eye full of childish innocence. He probably knew nothing of the wars and the killings that were going on in the world around him.
"I'm Alex. It's nice to meet you, Tyson" I stuck out my hand. He looked at it in shock, like he'd never shaken hands with someone. Putting out his callused, huge, roughened hand, we shook.
"It is dark out. Why up so early?"
"Couldn't sleep, nightmares. You?"
"Miss my brother. He is at home, with friends. I am alone." After saying this, a big tear rolled down the side of his face. The poor guy, he missed his brother. When he said he was all alone, I understood.
"Well, I'm alone, too. Do you want to be alone together?"
"Sounds fun. We can be friends." He grinned at me.
"Friends." I agreed. We sat down on the sand and lapsed into silence. Tyson wasn't one of those people who make silences awkward or think they needed to be filled, I could tell that we were just two friends, sitting, enjoying the quiet beauty of the sea. After about thirty minutes, I thought of a question.
"Tyson, is your brother Percy Jackson?"
"Yes, he is a hero. He helps many people. Percy saved Artemis."
"Then he will be the Child of the Prophecy?"
"Maybe. It could be you, but Luke and Kronos have sent him many dreams; he has done much to avoid his fate. I hope it is not him."
"Tyson, I don't want it to be him, either. He has family, a brother and a mother to miss him. I have no one to miss me, it would be less painful if it was me. I don't want it to be, though. I don't want to die."
"You will not die. We are friends, friends do not die."
He was naïve. "You're right, Tyson. Friends do not die. We will all live, so let's not talk about death and prophecies anymore. Are you excited for capture the flag?"
"Yes. I am excited. I build the traps with my friends." Tyson smiled, already forgetting about our other conversation.
"So you like the forges? I like them, too, but I can only make-"
"RAINBOW!" Tyson screamed. Two hippocampus had surfaced and a large one was neighing and snorting in Tyson's direction. He ran out into the knee-high water and patted "Rainbow" on the head. "Alex, come and meet Rainbow! He is a fish-pony!"
"Uh, Tyson? I'm really scared of water, are you sure that's a good id-AHH!" Tyson had picked me up and carried me out to meet the hippocampus. They looked at me warily, they could probably smell death. I tend to make animals nervous because I give of the feeling of death.
Even though the water was only knee-deep for him, it was waist high for me. I clung to him, trying to claw my way up and get away from the water. He let out a hearty laugh.
"Alex, it is only water! Nothing can happen to you!" he said, trying to set me down. The two water animals were tossing their manes and making noises that sounded suspiciously like laughter.
"I could drown, I could get eaten or attacked, I could slip, I could hit my head-"
"But we are friends, I will keep you from drowning. You can hold my hand!" Tyson said. Before I could object, he set me down, stood me up, and took my little hand in his huge one. I almost passed out. I clutched onto his hand like it was my lifeline, which it was. He said, "See? Not bad. Now meet Rainbow and Snoozles."
The hippocampuses came closer and butted my hand, both of which were wrapped tight around Tyson's arm. I loosened one and hesitantly petted the horse's neck. It sniffed me. I petted it some more. I let go of Tyson's hand and rubbed it's neck, forgetting my fear for the moment. These were such beautiful creatures. I turned and Tyson was smiling like Christmas had come early.
"This isn't so bad." I conceded.
"Very fun! Snoozles likes you. He says you smell like apples, not death."
I laughed. "Do they eat apples?"
"Yes. I feed them sometimes. They like the red ones." Tyson said, pulling said apple from a pocket. He gave it to me, I split it in half, and fed the horses one half each.
"This is awesome, Tyson! Animals usually freak out whenever I come near them. You should see what happens when I go to the zoo. How often do you see them?" I asked, a huge, goofy smile on my face.
"I see fish-ponies about once a month."
"Lucky!"
One of the horses, Snoozles, I think, snorted and whinnied. Tyson's smile shrunk, but then grew bigger again.
"Snoozles says they have to go. They will come back tomorrow. We can play again!"
"That's great, Tyson!"
"Yes, it is." We said good-bye to the hippocampuses and walked back onto the beach. The sun was just beginning to rise. It was almost time to get up.
"Well, Tyson, I have to get back to Cabin Eleven before they wake up and see I've gone. It was nice to meet you! Thanks for letting me meet your hippocampus friends."
"Was no problem. I got a new friend!" He blushed and looked down at his feet. He stuck his hand into his pocket and pulled out his wire and scrap bronze, which was now a miniature Rainbow. The detail was incredible; its mane was blown back by invisible wind, its head held high with pride. How could he have done that with just wire and metal?
"Oh, Tyson! It's so pretty. How did you do that so quickly?"
"I am good with metal. Here, so you will remember that we are friends."
I took it. "I could never forget that we are friends, Tyson." I stepped forward and hugged him. He hugged me back and almost cracked my ribs.
"Good luck with the game today!" I shouted behind me as I raced toward the cabin.
"You, too, new friend!" Tyson bellowed.
I didn't feel alone. I didn't fear my nightmare, I was glad Tyson had been on the beach. His innocence had reminded me that I was not all bad. When I entered my cabin, I switched from my "Happy, Smiley, Daughter of Hades" mood and entered my "I am Alex and I am going to Win Capture the Flag" mode.
No one was up yet, it was only 7:45, so I jumped in the shower. After I got out, dried and brushed my hair, and had gotten dressed in my black jeans and tank-top and Luke's orange T-shirt, (which still freaked me out. Chiron had to get me new stuff.) , I walked out of the bathroom and went over on my sleeping bag. I dug around in my bag of toiletries and triumphantly stood up with a hair-tie. I usually never put my hair up, but desperate times call for desperate measures. My hair was to long, it came down to the small of my back. I would leave it down for the game, but I had to keep my wits about me when we were training; it wouldn't do to be whipping someone with my hair when we were planning our assault.
I walked back into the bathroom and put my hair up. After doing this, I exited the cabin. Almost half the cabins were up already. Some were heading up to breakfast. I followed them up the dining pavilion and sat at the empty Hermes table. Athena, Aphrodite, Apollo, and Demeter were up and chatting. I hate the morning people who wake up and say, "This is going to be a great day!" when they know it isn't.
I wondered if we were supposed to offer burned food in the morning, too. All the people were eating, so I sat down and filled my plate. Waffles, apples, and Diet Coke is a breakfast from heaven for me. When I was in Missouri, I signed up to eat breakfast and lunch at school. Needless to say, the food was not the best. I wolfed down my food in about five minutes, I stood up and walked out of the pavilion. I remembered that Clarisse had told me to be at the sword arena at nine, so I headed there. I felt so weird this morning; my adrenaline was pounding, I even had a bit of a smile on my face! I think I was excited or, gods forbid, even happy. While I was walking to the arena, I considered this; it was quite unusual, but I liked it.
Entering the large training area, I only found half the people there. All the Apollo Cabin was there, that wasn't surprising: they probably rose with the sun, and the Demeter kids. They were just sitting around, talking. I took a seat in the back, half in shadows, to observe. After about ten minutes of sitting, the other cabins filed in. Ares and the twins from the Dionysus Cabin were chattering about plans and traps. They all sat down. Clarisse stood and walked to the center of the arena.
"Right, we have a new member to the red team, she should be here to show us what she's got, she said she has a strategy, that's why I chose you," she pointed at the Demeter and Dionysus kids. "New Girl!" Clarisse shouted.
I listened to what she said with a small smile on my face. Great introduction, right? I thought of myself appearing beside her. "I have a name, Clarisse," I said, stepping out of the shadows and scaring the living daylights out of her.
"Right, whatever." Clarisse said. "What can you do? Can you fight, can you blast, are you good at strategy?"
"I'm a jack of all trades." I said to her.
"Meaning?" Clarisse asked impatiently, not getting the mortal phrase.
"I do a bit of everything."
She almost jumped in the air. "Let's fight, get a feel of your style, then you can tell us you plan!" She looked like she had won the lottery.
"Fine, what's allowed?"
"What," she asked.
"Is it just swords, just powers, or free for all?"
"Everything."
I nodded, drawing my blades. On of her brothers tossed her a spear and a helmet. I said, "No, thanks." when someone offered me a helmet. "Your funeral," they replied.
Clarisse took an experimental jab at me, I sidestepped. She advanced. I used my age old trick that I use in dodge ball: I take a small step to the side and let her spear pass under my arm. I could've grabbed hold and pulled, disarming her, but then it would've been over to quickly. I let go of the spear and she pulled back. I advanced, blocking her attempts to skewer me with my two swords. I slashed, trying to get at her hand, but she lunged forward and hit my blade. It was like a deadly dance, I would lunge forward, she would step back. She would lunge, I take a step to the right or left. This would go on forever. I collapsed my swords, she kept coming. I concentrated on the area behind her, I disappeared in a whirl of black shadow and reappeared. She turned and charged, I ran at her. Just as she was about to stab me, I hit the dirt and slid between her legs. Jumping up, I hit her on the back with the back of my hand. She turned again.
"Hand to hand?" I asked.
She nodded and threw her spear back to her brother. She swung a fist at me, but stuck my arm up and blocked it. I smiled; this is where it would get fun. Her eyes narrowed, she was getting frustrated. She swung again. I ducked and swept my leg into the back of her knees-she fell. Getting up, she said, "Would you be okay if two of my brothers came out and fought, too? It doesn't seem like it would bug you."
"It's fine," I said, panting a little. "This is gonna be a hard fight!"
Two big, muscular guys came in. three to one, when I got in fights at school, it was usually just two. This was going to be difficult. One guy tried to swipe me with his sword. I ducked and hit him on the side of his head with my palm. If I closed my fist, it would have knocked him out, but I didn't actually want to hurt him. He staggered back anyway. The other boy tried to hit my back, but I delivered a roundhouse kick to the left side of his neck. Clarisse charged; I delivered a spinning back kick to her ribs. The two were down for the count. The boy I hit first was rushing me. I couldn't let them know the full extent of my hand to hand combat training, so I just stepped to the left, stuck out my leg, and tripped him. The three campers were down in about ten seconds.
I stooped and offered Clarisse and the other guy my hands. They took them and I pulled them up. The boy I tripped had already gotten up and was smiling.
"Well, I guess you can take care of yourself, Alex." Clarisse said, using the sleeve of her army jacket to wipe sweat off her brow.
"Take care of herself? She could break ribs without even trying!" shouted a guy from Apollo's Cabin.
"Shut up, Fletcher." said an Ares camper.
"It's really not a big deal, Clarisse would've skewered me with her spear if I hadn't kept running." I said, trying to divert the attention from my beating them. "Um, so my plan?" I asked Clarisse.
"She nodded, to winded to speak. She sat down, rubbing her ribs.
"Okay, now, I understand that Dryads, Naiads, and Nymphs always want to play, right?" They nodded. "Well, I have a plan where they can. Demeter, Dionysus, you can grow plants and vines, right?"
A girl, who I would later know as Katie Gardner, stood up. "Yes, we can grow grass, flowers, grain, just not vine plants. The twins can do those."
"Can you work with Juniper and her friends to grow defenses?"
Katie's eyes glinted as she saw where I was going with this. "Of course."
"Our flag will need to be in the woods, preferably with close-packed trees. The Demeter and Dionysus kids will use their abilities to grow barriers to protect the flag. Clarisse, do you know what Athena is planning?"
She answered, "Yeah, They set up traps so you couldn't do your weird "Dissolve out of darkness and get our flag" thing. They also usually get the naiads in the creek to make mud to slow us down."
"Okay, so we can't count on their help. Juniper agreed to help us. Apollo, who's your fastest runners?"
The head counselor of Apollo, Lee Fletcher, stood and said, "Will, Anna, Jackson, Rachael, and me."
"You will lead a decoy around the left side of the forest." I drew one of my knives from my boot and squatted down, drawing a rough map of the camp. "The flag can be here. Clarisse?"
"It's good, secluded, close-packed trees."
"Lee, take your group here." I drew an arrow to the left. "The rest of you," I said to the Apollo campers, "Will set traps here, here, and here around the creek. Then you can lead a decoy down the right flank of the forest." Lee nodded. "Demeter, you will lead a decoy down the center."
"All these decoys, there is no room for a main force to get to the flag!" a boy from Ares practically yelled.
"That's where the dyads come in. All of you Ares campers will go up into the trees. They will pass you from tree to tree and none of your numbers will be diminished. When you get to Athena's camp, I will be there. We will have to get the flag then. You will get to fight and beat on the other team as a small party of you will run with me to our side. Our flag will still be there, because you," I looked at the Dionysus twins, Castor and Pollux, "will have been guarding it so well. Any questions?"
A girl from Demeter asked, "What traps should we set?"
"Oh, anything you can think of. The traps will be responsible for withholding the brunt of Athena's attack force, so we will need a lot."
Pollux asked, "Where will you be?"
"I'll be running through the right-center, I have a feeling that's where the main attack will come through." I answered.
"How will you meet us there on time?" asked Clarisse.
"I'll be there on time."
"But what if-"
"I'll be there on time." I said with conviction, closing that particular discussion.
"Ok, then. Lets go set those traps, then!" said Will Solace, trying to diffuse the tension.
"Sure," I said. "Let's do this, I don't want to clean the Hermes Cabin." We all headed out. Apollo kids were setting up the main traps in front of our camp. Katie Gardner and her friends were growing twenty foot tall bamboo saplings; Castor and Pollux were growing vines, coaxing them to weave between the trees and the bamboo. They were creating an impenetrable wall for our flag. the dryads and nymphs were practicing lifting the Ares kids up the trees. Clarisse and I were discussing tactics and trap-placing.
"If we get some naiads from the lake here," Clarisse said, "We can make a mud pit here." She pointed at the map.
"So what your saying is we can move the trip wire and log trap here?"
"Yeah, and that will eliminate the need for the spiked wall here."
"Then we should move the three archers here, providing some cover for the twins." I said.
"Ok," she agreed.
"Do you think we will need a trap here? We have no guards or traps set here." I said, worried about our right flank.
"Nah, Lee and his siblings will have that covered." Clarisse said confidently.
"Ok, if you say so," I answered.
"Are you sure you don't want some help, if you're right about their plan, you might need some help."
"I'll be fine, now about your people in the trees," I said, once again trying to draw attention from how I fit into the plan, "they have to keep quiet. The Athena campers and their team already know the nature spirits are on our side, they suspect things. Your brothers and sisters might want to travel light, less armor."
"Maybe. Some of us have enchanted weapons or armor. We'll keep it down. Now, about these fortifications here…"
And on it went. The team prepared, ate lunch, practiced, ran through it again, and practiced some more. The game was taken very seriously, and all to soon it was time to suit up in armor.
0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o 0-o
I was not wearing my armor. My whole team was looking at me like I was insane when I showed up in my black boots, T-shirt, and black shorts. It was hot, I didn't wear armor, and I had a minimal wardrobe. Chiron told us to get into position, and with one blow on a conch horn, the game started.
"Clarisse, Lee, Katie, Will! Go and good luck!" They nodded, but I didn't take time to look, I took off. I've always been a fast runner, I've spent most of my life running. I wanted to be on the school track team, but I would have had to show up for practice, so it wasn't an option. Racing through the trees, this came to mind for some reason. I paused when I heard something above me rattle. I could vaguely see a shape in the tree.
"Shut up!" I hissed.
"Sorry!" they whispered back.
I took off again. I heard some distant clanging to my left, but I kept going. There, I saw about fifteen campers headed my way. About fifty feet separated us. I ran faster, intending to jump over them, but a Hermes girl, Louise, threw a net at me. I dodged it with ease, but I was surprised. I expected them to be a light, running party. The larger, heavily armed parties were on the right. I misjudged their strategy. These thoughts flitted through my mind as I kept running at them. I drew my two swords and vaulted over one girl. She made to turn and swing at me with her sword, but I kicked her in the back, sending her flying forward. Two Athena campers came at me. I ducked a sword , blocked another, and disarmed a small boy. I slammed the hilt of my sword into one girl's helmet, effectually jarring her, while my other sword was occupied fending off an attack. She fell. I was hit in the back, and I fell forward. I turned over, avoiding another net. I used my arms to push myself high in the air. I brought my feet under me and delivered a high kick under Connor Stoll's chin, I gifted another spinning kick to Travis. I slashed my knives across an Athena camper's back, cutting two large gashes in the armor, but avoiding the skin. They were all down. I ran, risking a bit of shadow travel.
I appeared about three hundred feet from the flag. A guard shouted, but I was already halfway to the flag. One camper rushed me, but I sidestepped and hit them in the back of the neck, where there was a chink in the armor. I grabbed the flag and saw the Ares campers coming down from various trees. Then, something I was totally unprepared for happened. More than half the other team came out from the ground. When I mean out of the ground, I mean that they pulled leaf-covered metal off the ground, revealing pits that they had dug. About thirty campers jumped out of the pits and rushed me, their closest target. I tied their flag around my waist and shouted, "Clarisse! Send someone for Lee and Katie's decoy! It's a trap!" I heard her shout orders to her cabin mates, but I was fighting.
Three Hephaestus campers rushed me. I ran at a nearby tree, jumped, and kicked off it, delivering a crushing kick to one boy's chest. I punched another in the face, disarmed one, and looked to Clarisse.
"Run! Take the flag and run!" I nodded, but stepped into shadows for a moment. I shut my eyes. My stomach twisted painfully and my ears popped, but I smiled grimly as the earth shook. I stepped out of shadows and saw that skeletons were crawling out of the earth. About forty came up and stood at attention, waiting for me to tell them what to do.
"Five of you, defend me! Others, defend my team. No killing or maiming!" After issuing orders and seeing the shock, but hope, flitting across my teammates' faces, I ran.
My animations ran behind me, keeping the twenty campers that were following me off my back. I sprinted past Chiron, who was tending to the campers I had fought earlier. One was just sitting up.
"Sorry!" I shouted as I leapt over them, landing on my hands and going into another somersault. The kids following me had to go around, it slowed them down. I could see the creek up ahead. I remembered what Clarisse had said about the naiads making mud traps. As I got closer and closer to the creek, I didn't see any mud traps, until I slid ten feet into the creek. I jumped up and looked behind me; my animations were fighting. I clenched my fist and they sank into the ground. I took one step out of the creek, and then another. The banner in my hand changed from a silver flag and owl to a black one with a helm of darkness lined in silver. I heard cheers and shouting from across the woods. Pollux and Castor ran from their perch in the trees and were shouting. The two brothers tackled me, dragging me to the top of our camp, on top of a gentle hill. My teammates were racing from the woods, smiles on their faces. I shocked myself by smiling a huge, warm smile at them. They hoisted me onto their shoulders, screaming and jumping, we went into the woods, where they were already setting up card tables and building a huge bonfire for the victory party.
They set me down and I was thumped on the back by Clarisse, who said, "You're ok, Nexumbra. Good to have you on our team." I smiled at her.
"Thanks, Clarisse, I'm glad you were there, or we would've lost, big time."
"Your right, we would've." She walked away to rub it in the Athena Cabin's faces. I shrugged, Ares wasn't the most modest of the gods, but still, I was glad I was on their team.
I grabbed a Coke and took a huge swig, but nearly coughed it back up when I saw something, or someone, emerge from the trees. It wasn't a camper, it was a man. What worried me was the huge hellhound tromping along behind him. I let out a warning cry, and they turned. I drew my swords, took a step toward the monster and man.
I said to the creature, "Ví̱ma pros ta káto̱, hellhound, í̱ tha sas dýnami̱ píso̱ ston Káto̱ Kósmo."
The two stopped advancing.
Everyone drew their weapons and the man and monster were faced with one hundred, trigger/sword happy campers.
Chiron stepped forward and said to the man, "My friend, we have much to talk about, but perhaps you could dismiss Mrs. O'Leary so my campers aren't all on edge."
"Of course, Mrs. O'Leary, down. Hello campers, I am Quintus."
I narrowed my eyes. The Fifth. I got a bad feeling from this man, I couldn't figure it out, but he was wrong…
Now, I have been told that I have neglected my other story to write this one; that is true. If you like my writing, please check out A Traitor in Our Midst, A Love in our Past. I know, long title, but I think it is a good story. It is for Harry Potter, so if your just a PJO reader, it might not be for you. I would love it if you gave it a review!
